Gartcairn squad 'is in place' as boss targets First Division title triumph

Ryan McStay says the Airdrie club are in a good place ahead of the new season
Gartcairn co-boss Ryan McStay says the club is in a good place, with 19 players lined up and ready to kick off next season in the West of Scotland First Division.
Though eight clubs are guaranteed promotion into the Premier Division next season due to Lowland League reconstruction, McStay has targeted the title.

And he says obtaining their SFA Licence could see the Airdrie club leap right up to the Lowland League West.

He said: 'We know there's going to be eight promoted, but we're hoping to build a squad that's going to be challenging for the league.
'There's still talk that if clubs in the Premier haven't got their licence, there's a possibility that we could maybe jump up two leagues to the new top league.
'We need to look after ourselves, start well, do things right.
'We have a new analysis room up at the ground, so we're trying to do things right, and make sure the boys buy in to what we're trying to do, crack on, and have a successful season.
'It's going to be a tough league, when you look at the teams that are in it, but we're going to be in a good position.
'We started back pre-season training earlier this month, we've just got another lad confirmed that's going to sign for us, so that takes us up to 19 for the season.

'We're in a very good position, the squad is looking really good.
'We have a few people coming who are going to do pre-season with us, so people might move on, and others pop up.

'I've been speaking to other managers who are sitting on 12 or 13 players and struggling to get others in, so for us to be sitting on 19 confirmed at this point means we're in a great position.'
Gartcairn have brought in Ryan Dakhil from Pollok as assistant manager, and McStay said: 'We've brought in Ryan, I know and trust him very well.
'Ryan probably knows everyone in this set-up, so he's good to bring players in, and he will be a massive asset.'
Goalkeeper Kieran Hughes, defenders Ryan Locke and Scott Rumsby, midfielder Kenny Barr and forwards Robert Thomson and Ross Caldwell have all left the club.
Meanwhile, Gartcairn drew 2-2 with Lowland League Broxburn on Saturday in their first pre-season friendly.
McStay said: 'It was a brilliant run out for the lads against a good team. There are plenty of positives to take.'

How Liverpool star Mo Salah is helping motivate Dunfermline Athletic midfielder Alfons Amade

Alfons Amade is convinced Dunfermline can reap the rewards of his international experiences taking on global superstars. The summer signing is still finding his feet with the Pars but made his Scottish league debut as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Airdrie last time out. It was a far cry from the glamour of his outings at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals with Mozambique in January last year. Amongst his opponents in three starts were Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah, Manchester City's Omar Marmoush, Spurs signing Mohammed Kudus, and Leicester City's Jordan Ayew. Mozambique failed to progress for the knockout stages, with a 97th-minute Salah penalty costing them victory against Egypt in their opening group game. However, with the 'Os Mambas' qualifying for the 2025 tournament, which kicks off in December, Amade admits his international challenges are helping to motivate his drive for success at club level. 'It's different on the international level but it's a nice experience,' said the 25-year-old. 'I think it's improving me as a player as well. 'Not only to play with (good players), but also to play against them. The environment is different. It's a good experience. 'I take it for my career, for my life, for everything. This is something I learned there. I'm happy about it. 'Nobody can take (the Africa Cup of Nations) from me because I experienced this. 'This is also something that motivates you to improve more. It's not about just being nice or to enjoy (playing) against big players. 'It's about winning against them, no matter who their name is or who the opponent is. 'This is something that I can do not only on an international level, but also in the league or in the cup. It's something that I have learned for myself.' Amade was born in Germany and played internationally there at youth level as he came through the ranks at Hoffenheim. However, after leaving for Oostende in Belgium in search of first-team experience, he made the decision to switch allegiance to Mozambique. With Chiquinho Conde's team being drawn against Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Gabon in this year's tournament, there is plenty for Amade to look forward to internationally. But, with a televised Fife derby fast approaching on Friday, the midfielder has his sights set only on Dunfermline for the time being. 'Obviously, this year there will be a big tournament. But, for now, it's far away for me,' added Amade, who joined the Pars on a two-year deal last month. 'I'm just focusing now on Dunfermline. I will see how the season will go. 'I personally look at it from step to step. Dunfermline, the club, everything is new. I still need to adapt. I still need to know the players on the pitch, off the pitch, the coach as well. 'This is the only thing I'm focusing on right now.'

Albion Rovers losing to Thorniewood wasn't an 'upset', but boss wasn't happy

Sandy Clark says a first-round exit to West of Scotland League opposition wasn't a shock Albion Rovers boss Sandy Clark insisted being knocked out of the South Challenge Cup at the first hurdle by West of Scotland First Division side Thorniewood was not an upset. ‌ But he was far from happy with his side's performance in the penalty shootout that cost the Lowland League club their place in the competition. ‌ The sides fought out a 0-0 stalemate at Cliftonhill and the visitors prevailed 4-3 on spot kicks. ‌ And Clark said: 'I don't think it is an upset. Thorniewood have got a lot more experience and a much bigger budget than we have. 'If you look at the difference in leagues, we'd probably go in as favourites to most people but we should have won the game, it is as simple as that. 'We dominated, especially in the second half, and created loads of chances. Their goalkeeper was definitely their man of the match and when it goes to penalties I'm disappointed that we didn't execute the penalties as well as I'd have liked. 'I warned the guys beforehand; don't do a tippy-tappy, sidefoot effort. If you are going to hit it, hit it hard, but three of them elected not to take that advice. 'We missed three out of our six penalties and that is why we are out of the cup. ‌ 'The actual performance was really good in lots of ways. It was our first clean sheet of the season, we created a lot of chances and played a lot of good football. We just couldn't get that break in front of goal. 'We deserved to win the game but Thorniewood held out and won the penalties.' Clark now needs to lift his side for a league double header this week. ‌ Rovers are due to host Broxburn Athletic tonight (Tuesday) and on Saturday they travel to Gretna. Clark added: 'There's no such thing as an easy game and if we want to beat Broxburn, we need to play with the same effort and commitment as we did on Saturday and hope we get the breaks in front of goal. 'We've had a really good start to the season in lots of ways, so we are looking forward to the next game.'

Airdrie keen on former Dunfermline boss as club search for Rhys McCabe successor

The Diamonds are on a hunt for a new manager and they have announced who will take the team for Saturday's clash against Queen's Park Former Dunfermline boss James McPake is understood to be among the contenders to replace Rhys McCabe at Airdrieonians. ‌ The Diamonds are on the hunt for a new gaffer after McCabe stepped down on Friday, citing the desire to spend more time with his family. ‌ However, Lanarkshire Live Sport understands issues behind the scenes played a major role, with McCabe frustrated with the club's hierarchy amid a lack of transfer dealings. ‌ Club chairman Paul Hetherington is now drawing up a shortlist of candidates to take the reins at New Broomfield. And it is understood Airdrie are keen on McPake, who has been out of work since Christmas last year when he was sacked by the Pars amid a poor run that had them second bottom of the Championship at the time. Meanwhile, just 24 hours after McCabe's resignation was made public, Hetherington was spotted at Hamilton Accies' clash with East Fife at Broadwood, sparking speculation he could be in for Accies gaffer John Rankin amid the club's transfer embargo in League One. Airdrie have announced McCabe's remaining coaching staff will take the team for Saturday's Championship clash at home to Queen's Park, which will see former Diamond Sean Crighton make his return to Monklands. ‌ A club statement read: "In light of the current managerial vacancy, first-team coaches Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, David Hutton and Bryan Prunty will be responsible for team matters until a new manager is appointed. "Club captain Aidan Wilson and vice-captain Dean McMaster will also play their part alongside other senior players as the squad prepare for Saturday's match against Queen's Park. "The interim management team will be fully supported by academy director Alan Gow and the board of directors."
