Inside RCB's title winning IPL campaign
AHMEDABAD: Krunal Pandya was jumping up and down with his fists up at the short third-man. Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh had sent Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Josh Hazlewood to the ropes on the fourth ball of the last over in the 2025 IPL final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Tuesday night. Krunal was not celebrating the fact that his teammate was hit for a four, but because he knew it did not matter. He knew he had won his fourth IPL trophy, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru had won their first. He knew no matter what happens in the next two deliveries, Ee saala cup namdu (this year, the cup is finally RCB's). Away from him in the deep midwicket boundary, Virat Kohli was struggling to keep it together. Right from the second ball of that Hazlewood over, Kohli had been shaking restlessly, waiting for it all to be over. He had turned towards AB de Villiers — a best friend and a former teammate — indicating that he was gonna cry. The tears dripped down over the next few deliveries before he eventually went down. In the other part of the ground was Rajat Patidar — the injury replacement batter from 2022, who had now become the first male captain to win a trophy for the Bengaluru franchise. He was smiling, but his cheeks were red, eyes were wet. It was a common emotion that prevailed not just on the players who were in the field waiting for Hazlewood to complete the over, but also on the 70,000-odd fans who had turned up in RCB colours in the stands. The moment they had been agonisingly waiting for finally came when Shashank smashed Hazlewood over the extra cover boundary. Nobody cared where the ball went or what the margin was. Not even the Punjab Kings team. They were too heartbroken to care. In fact, head coach Ricky Ponting would later ask the press corps whether the last ball was six and what the margin of defeat was. The margin — no matter how small it was — did not matter. RCB and Kohli knew it too. They have been on the losing side far too many times. Not on Tuesday. Not in 2025. This IPL, right from the day the mega auction was over, RCB had the markings of a title-winning squad. This was not a squad built on superstar batters on whom they historically spent more than they should. This was a team built with match-winners, players with specified roles and an Indian core that complemented Kohli. This was a campaign built on multiple heroes from different parts of the country and the world who came together to make the dream come true.

Upbeat Ajith Ram eyes strong show at TNPL
CHENNAI: Ace left-arm spinner S Ajith Ram was the cynosure of all eyes when he bagged the prestigious V Jagannathan Memorial Trophy at the TNCA annual day function recently for being the best bowler from Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. Visibly upbeat after that honour, he is now eager to keep up the good run during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), which kick-starts on Thursday. Ajith Ram, who'll be representing Salem Spartans, has been looking to sharpen his skills in white-ball cricket. "Preparations for TNPL are actually going well. So, I am not thinking too much about what to do, what not to do. So, just trying to react to how things are going. Especially in T20 cricket, we have to react well. So, I am backing my skills to react well at the correct time. And depending on the team situation, try to execute the plan," he told this The New Indian Express. "I want to improve and do well in white-ball cricket. I haven't played for Tamil Nadu yet in white-ball and there is a lot of competition. So, this (TNPL) is a good challenge for me to do and see where I stand. If I can compete with others, that is enough for me. But if that gives me that opportunity to play for white-ball, I will be very happy." He has also been working on his batting with aspirations to make an impact down the order. "I'm also working on my batting. I am trying to take my game deep, because power-hitting is something that I have done for a long time now. So, I am just trying to, you know, contribute whatever I can," he added. His long-term ambition is to be part of the Indian Premier League. Ajit Ram felt TNPL is a good platform to highlight his talent. "I think I see it (TNPL) as a great platform for me to show my talent. And hopefully get an IPL contract. Because many players perform well in TNPL teams and are going ahead from here. So, I would also like to try this out and give my best to impress someone. Somewhere the talent scouts of the various IPL teams watch the TNPL matches. Hopefully, if I do well in front of them, I will have a chance to get picked," said Ajith Ram.

After RCB's IPL ecstasy, Bengaluru mourns
CHENNAI: In what was supposed to be a celebration parade remembered fondly for years ended up turning into a tragic incident as several lives were lost in a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL title win ceremony in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Expecting to watch their cricketing heroes and celebrate their team's victory, thousands of fans had taken to the streets since the afternoon. Soon, it led to chaos and tragedy as several people were injured and at least 10 people died by the time the team reached the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the bus after meeting with the state chief minister in Vidhana Soudha. From metro stations to roads, everything came to a standstill in the city as thousands of fans, including children, were trying to get to the venue and get a glimpse of their stars and the team without any clarity on the situation. In several videos that did rounds on social media, law enforcement officials could be seen pleading to the fans to go back home and watch the celebrations on television. What made the tragedy look even worse was that the celebrations went on inside the stadium — it was also streamed live — even as the death toll increased. Reacting to the tragic loss of lives, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said: "We offer our heartfelt condolences to everyone who lost their loved ones. It was really shocking for us and we are very sad about the loss of life in Bengaluru. Some serious lapses have definitely taken place in Bengaluru and because of it so many people were injured so many lives were lost. Last year, there was proper co-ordination BCCI, state government and local law enforcement authorities; planning and protocols were maintained, there were lots of checks and balances. Everything was planned and done. We hope in future nobody takes up such kind of celebration where any loss of lives happen because people gather without doing necessary homework for protocol and planning," Saikia told this daily.
