FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2025™: Morocco to Face Brazil in opening match

CAF05-06-2025
The draw for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Morocco 2025™, held on Wednesday in Rabat, set the tone for a highly anticipated edition of the tournament featuring competitive groups and a dazzling, historic opening match between the host nation and Brazil.
The African flag will be flown by hosts Morocco, Cameroon, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, and Zambia during the 3-week tournament taking place between 17 October – 8 November.
As hosts of this eighth edition, Morocco have not been dealt an easy hand. Drawn into Group A alongside Brazil, Italy, and Costa Rica
The opening match, scheduled to take place in Rabat, will see Morocco go head-to-head with a Brazilian side renowned for its strength at youth level. This high-profile fixture will serve as an important benchmark for Morocco, as they gauge how far they've come in their footballing development.
Cameroon to Tackle a Formidable Group B
Group B presents a stern test for Cameroon, who will face North Korea, Mexico, and the Netherlands in a compelling mix of footballing philosophies and playing styles. The Lionesses will need to combine tactical discipline with physical strength to compete effectively.
Although Cameroon have never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in this competition, their U-17 side will be hoping to break new ground. Their recent success on the regional stage, particularly within the UNIFFAC zone, offers a solid foundation for optimism.
Nigeria Aim to Maintain Their Legacy
As one of the most successful African nations at youth level, Nigeria arrive with a proud legacy to uphold. Drawn into Group D, the Super Flamingos will take on France, Canada, and Samoa. It's a challenging group, but well within reach for a team known for its athletic prowess and technical quality.
The Nigerian class of 2025 is attracting a lot of attention. With the right momentum, they have the potential to reach the quarterfinals or even further. Their encounter with France could very well be the pivotal fixture of the group.
Debut Challenge for Côte d'Ivoire
Côte d'Ivoire will make their tournament debut in Group E, where they'll face Spain, Colombia, and South Korea. The Ivorians will need to demonstrate character and determination to compete at this level.
Their match against Spain, the runners-up in the previous edition, will be a formidable test. However, it's not insurmountable. Should the Little Elephants manage to hold off the Spanish onslaught, an upset could be on the cards. Their attacking line known for its speed and unpredictability could be their biggest asset.
Zambia Ready to Make a Statement in Group F
In Group F, Zambia is set to face Japan, New Zealand, and Paraguay. Though less experienced than their opponents, the U-17 Copper Princesses arrive with a clear goal: to surpass the performance of previous African teams at this stage of the tournament.
It's a demanding draw, particularly against a Japanese side famed for its collective organisation and fluidity.

Coaches praise the excellent organization by CAF and the high competitive level of CHAN2024 TotalEnergies

The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, held under the slogan 'Pamoja' , continues to captivate observers and stakeholders of African football. From the very first matchdays of the group stage, the tournament has stood out not only for the intensity of the games but also for the rigor and quality of its organization, overseen by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, the tournament is a powerful illustration of the rise of domestic football across the continent. The smooth organization, top-tier infrastructure, and competitiveness of the participating teams demonstrate CAF's commitment to making CHAN a true showcase for African football. Through statements made by several coaches, it is clear that CHAN is more than just a competition: it serves as a concrete driver for the sustainable development of national and regional football in Africa. Three renowned coaches—those of Mauritania, Tanzania, and Madagascar—spoke enthusiastically about the technical level displayed so far by the competing teams and expressed their gratitude for the tremendous efforts made by CAF to ensure the success of this edition, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The coaches also stressed the importance of CHAN TotalEnergies as a key platform for the growth of African football, praising both the organizational excellence and the fierce competition. Lopez Garai, Hemed Suleiman, and Romuald Rakotondrabe Praise CAF's Efforts Mauritania coach Arturo López Garai expressed his admiration for CAF's organization so far, while highlighting the quality of the matches and the level shown by the teams. 'I have followed all the matches since the start of the competition and I can say the level is high. I especially watched Algeria's match—they have a very good team that we have already faced—as well as Morocco's game. The match between Kenya and Angola was also superb. The overall level is truly satisfying,' he said. He also emphasized the quality of the facilities and expressed his wish to see more fans in the stands: 'The facilities are excellent. I hope the supporters will continue to come in large numbers, because football is for the players but also for the fans.' For his part, Tanzania coach Hemed Suleiman also commended CAF for its work in ensuring the success of this CHAN edition and for its broader role in the development of football in Africa. 'The CHAN TotalEnergies is going perfectly well so far. The level of the teams is remarkable and the tournament is very well organized,' he affirmed. He extended his thanks to CAF for its ongoing efforts, while noting the clear progress made by African teams: 'Thank you to CAF for all it is doing. Across the different matches, we can clearly see how teams are improving from one game to the next.' Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe also voiced his satisfaction with the technical level shown by the teams, while congratulating CAF for its organizational work. Having taken part in two consecutive CHAN editions—2022 in Algeria and the current 2024 edition in East Africa—he emphasized the consistency and quality of the arrangements: 'CAF's organization is very good. I have participated in two CHAN editions, and each time, the level of organization is remarkable. Congratulations to CAF for this work.' He concluded by praising the performance of the national teams competing in the continental tournament: 'The overall level of the national teams is very good.' Molefi Ntseki, head coach of South Africa's senior national team, made a point of praising the organisation of the event, highlighting that 'the accommodation and transport have been excellent, and the security provided to us has made us feel very safe; the host country is clearly taking good care of everyone.' Beyond comfort and logistics, Ntseki also emphasised the quality of the facilities: 'The training facilities are of a high standard, which has been appreciated by players and staff alike.' The competition also serves as an important test of the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) organisational capacity, which has been commended by participants. 'The organising committee deserves praise for strictly adhering to the rules and regulations of the competition, including protocols regarding team arrivals, stadium procedures, press conferences, and scheduling, all of which have been meticulously managed,' the coach noted. In a tournament that celebrates the development of African football, Ntseki concluded: 'As Africans, we are proud of the standards being set at this tournament, and we are grateful for all the effort put into its preparation and execution. Thank you and keep up the good work.' The enthusiastic testimonies of these three renowned coaches confirm the positive momentum that African football is experiencing. Meet the CHAN history maker: Bassam's fourth appearance in Africa's homegrown showpiece

Moulay Ahmed Khalil 'Bassam' is not just leading Mauritania at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Pamoja 2024 — he is rewriting the tournament's history books. Making his fourth appearance in just eight editions, the 36-year-old forward has featured in half of all CHAN tournaments ever staged, a feat no other Mauritanian player can claim. For more than a decade, Bassam has been the face of the Al-Murabitoun on the continental stage, carrying the hopes of a nation through triumphs and heartbreak. For Bassam, this year's tournament is personal. It marks his fourth CHAN finals, and despite Mauritania's stuttering start, he insists belief is intact ahead of a must-win clash against the Central African Republic. Now, as he steps into what could be his final CHAN campaign, Bassam is determined to ensure his legacy is not only about appearances, but about inspiring Mauritania to reach new heights. 'African teams are proving their global standing,' he says — and for him, that journey begins with keeping Mauritania's tournament dreams alive. In a candid conversation with he reflected on his side's setbacks, praised the organisation of the current edition, and delivered a promise to Mauritanian fans: the fight is far from over. In your last match, you suffered a heavy defeat against the host country, Tanzania, in the final minutes. What do you have to say? Moulay Ahmed Bassam: It was indeed a tough loss, as we conceded in the final minutes despite the players giving their all. It was a difficult match against the host nation, in front of their fans, so it was physically intense. This is football — we lost, but the tournament is not over yet. Mauritania have impressed in spells during the current edition of CHAN 2024 but are still without a win. Why do you think this is happening? Indeed, the first two matches were good, but in tournaments the most important thing is winning, because that is what qualifies you. Without wins, you cannot progress. Most of our team are young, and many are making their first appearance at the tournament. This lack of experience may have played a part, but they still performed well. We hope this will translate into victories in the remaining matches. You have one point before your third and difficult match against the Central African Republic. Mistakes are not allowed. How do you see the match from your side? Yes, we currently have one point, and the next match will be difficult, but our only goal is to win — there is no alternative. A draw might be considered a loss. I believe the players understand this and will give their all, because for us it is a life-or-death match. God willing, we will win it. This is your fourth CHAN finals. How do you view this edition compared to previous ones? Yes, this is my fourth participation, and I truly believe African football has developed a lot. Each tournament is tougher than the last. In this edition, I have seen excellent stadiums, good hotels, and generally strong organisation. What is your view on African football in general and its development? African football has developed significantly, not only on the continent but also globally. African teams are proving their standing on the world stage and confirming the value of talent in Africa. Do you have a final message for Mauritanian fans? We know the Mauritanian public is thirsty for victory and disappointed with our results so far in CHAN 2024. But we must also remember we are not out of the tournament yet. We still have matches to play, the most important being the next one, because there is no alternative but to win. We promise our fans we will work hard to achieve that, God willing. We will give everything in the final group match to secure qualification. Above all, we want to present a good image of Mauritanian football in this tournament.
