CBS Sports predicts freshman running back Gideon Davidson as the Tigers' 2025 MVP
Clemson's 2025 MVP pick from a national outlet might catch some fans off guard.
CBS Sports recently named a Most Valuable Player for each team in its way-too-early Top 25 rankings, and instead of going with a big name like quarterback Cade Klubnik—a Heisman hopeful heading into the season—they chose a newcomer: true freshman running back Gideon Davidson.
'This is a real out-of-the-box pick,' CBS Sports' Will Backus wrote. 'But the path is wide open for Davidson to start for a national title contender as a true freshman. Not only that; there's a real chance that Davidson becomes a bell cow for the Tigers. Phil Mafah is gone, Jay Haynes is working his way back from a torn ACL and likely won't be able to practice until closer to the season, and Keith Adams Jr. has 43 carries in three years of football. If Davidson can take advantage of his opportunities in the spring and fall, he'll fill arguably the biggest need on an otherwise solid and experienced roster.'
Davidson made his Clemson debut early by enrolling in January, and he didn't waste any time turning heads during spring workouts. He earned high praise from teammates and coaches alike—including Klubnik, who went so far as to compare him to Clemson legend Travis Etienne. Like Etienne, Davidson also sports the No. 9 jersey.
A consensus four-star recruit, Davidson wrapped up his high school career at Liberty Christian Academy (Va.) with over 2,000 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns in 2024, helping his team to a second straight state title. He was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Virginia as well as MaxPreps' top player in the state. Over his final two seasons, he totaled more than 5,000 rushing yards and 80 touchdowns.
With Clemson's backfield in transition—following the departure of Mafah and injury recovery for Haynes—Davidson is in position to take on a major role in 2025.
The Tigers, who finished 10-4 last season and returned to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020, come into the new year ranked No. 8 in CBS Sports' early rankings. They'll open the season against LSU on August 30 at Memorial Stadium.

Report: NCAA penalizes Wisconsin football for recruiting violations

Report: NCAA penalizes Wisconsin football for recruiting violations The NCAA is penalizing Wisconsin football for recruiting infractions that occurred during the spring of 2023. BadgerExtra's Colten Bartholomew was the first to report the news. Bartholomew writes that "nine members of Luke Fickell's staff violated a since-changed NCAA rule by making phone calls to recruits before the recruiting calendar allowed them to be made." Notably, that rule changed in August 2023, just months after the reported violations. Among those specifically penalized are Fickell, outside linebackers coach Matt Mitchell, former defensive line coach Greg Scruggs and former recruiting lead Max Stienecker. The infraction is a Level II violation. Both Scruggs and Stienecker received one-year show-cause orders, while Fickell and Mitchell will not be permitted to contact high school recruits from June 15-21. For more specifics on the violations and their fallout, here is Bartholomew's full report. Notably, neither of the two staffers who received show causes still works for Wisconsin. Scruggs left the program after the 2023 campaign for the same title at Big Ten rival Michigan, though he resigned just months into the job after an OWI arrest. He is now an assistant defensive line coach with the San Francisco 49ers. Stienecker, meanwhile, left Wisconsin in February to become USC's general manager. He and his recruiting staff currently have the Trojans atop the class of 2026 national rankings with 28 total commits, 18 blue-chip players and one five-star. Wisconsin finished the 2024 recruiting cycle, the one that included the reported infractions, with arguably the best class in program history. Among the program's 22 signees, 11 were blue-chip players. Four-star recruits offensive tackle Kevin Heywood, defensive lineman Ernest Willor Jr., running back Dilin Jones and defensive lineman Dillan Johnson headline a group that finished ranked No. 25 nationally and No. 7 in the Big Ten Conference. The 2025 season should see a significant portion of that class enter the team's two-deep depth chart. Running backs Dilin Jones and Darrion Dupree, offensive lineman Emerson Mandell, wide receiver Kyan Berry-Johnson, defensive lineman Dillan Johnson and linebacker Thomas Heiberger should all see the field. Heywood was also in line to start for the team at left tackle, though he is projected to miss the season after an ACL injury. Furthermore, cornerback Xavier Lucas already excelled as a true freshman in 2024, though he transferred to Miami in the offseason. The Badgers' class of 2026, which has yet to see a blue-chip player added, currently ranks No. 40 nationally. Jerry Jeudy excited to finally team up with 'great dude, great quarterback' Joe Flacco

BEREA — Jerry Jeudy and Joe Flacco finally found their way onto the same team with the Browns. It was a happening five years in the making. The Denver Broncos had released Flacco after one season in March 2020. They made Jeudy their first-round pick in the NFL draft the very next month. Advertisement That prevented the quarterback and the wide receiver from teaming up in the Mile High City. It didn't prevent Jeudy from learning about Flacco after the fact. "He actually left before I got there," Jeudy said after the Browns' OTA on Wednesday, May 28. "Yeah, he left before I got there, but I heard a lot of great things about him." Jeudy saw great things out of Flacco two years ago. That was despite the fact the wide receiver was still in Denver, while the quarterback was a November free-agent signing by Cleveland. Flacco was an observer from the Browns sideline after having just signed before a Week 12 loss to the Broncos that season. The next week, he took over as their starting quarterback, going 4-1 in December — including four consecutive 300-yard passing games — to lead them to the playoffs. Advertisement "I was watching it," Jeudy said. "I was watching it. I watched a few games so, yeah, I'm not surprised to see what Joe's been doing." Now, all these years later, Jeudy and Flacco have crossed paths — and the sixth-year wide receiver isn't going to let it go to waste, either. Jeudy's locker is located right next to the 18-year NFL quarterback. That has opened the door for the two to develop a bond off the field. "It been amazing," Jeudy said. "He's actually my locker mate, so I had some conversation with him from time to time. A great dude, great quarterback, been in the league for a long time, understands this, and I'm excited to have him." Advertisement One such conversation between Jeudy and Flacco took place before the two came out on the field for the Browns' second OTA practice May 28. Like so many of those conversations, it was, according to Jeudy, "a little bit of personal … something that I ain't going to say out here in the media. We just be talking." Flacco takes all of those conversation in stride. It's par for the course for a quarterback who's six years older than kicker Dustin Hopkins, the next-oldest player on the Browns roster at 34. The 40-year-old former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player said it's not uncommon for more than just Jeudy to seek out his advice. "I love that," Flacco said. "I was walking back to my locker, and three guys were sitting right there and I'm like, 'All right, what's the topic? What are we talking about?' And they usually tend to shut up and listen because they think I have some kind of wisdom because I'm old. I don't necessarily, at least on some of the things they're talking about, I'm not sure I do have the right kind knowledge about that, but it's a lot of fun." Advertisement Jeudy had heard something else about Flacco long before the two became teammates. It came from fellow University of Alabama product Amari Cooper, who was on the receiving end of so many of Flacco's throws in 2023. Cooper famously said Flacco's passes were like "poetry in motion." That comment was made after one of his first practices with the quarterback, while the Browns were in Los Angeles in late November 2023. "Yeah, I see exactly what he means," Jeudy said. "I see him out there every day so far, so I'm excited for Joe. I'm excited to play with him." The former Washington baseball star transferred to the Beavers following his sophomore season and has proven to be the potential top-10 MLB draft pick he has been widely projected to be in his first season in Corvallis, Oregon. REQUIRED READING: How does CWS work? Explaining format for NCAA baseball tournament Arquette is hitting .354 with 18 home runs and 65 RBIs for the Beavers while manning shortstop, proving to be the perfect replacement for former OSU star and 2024 No. 1 pick overall MLB draft pick Travis Bazzana. The 6-foot-5 star has gone 14-for-36 (.389 batting average) with three doubles, a home run, five RBIs and 11 runs scored in the postseason. Arquette is looking to lead the Beavers to their first national title since the 2018 season, at the 2025 College World Series. Here's what you need to know about Arquette, his stats, mock draft and why he transferred from Washington to Oregon State: Why did Aiva Arquette transfer from Washington to Oregon State? After seeing former Oregon State second baseman Bazzana selected No. 1 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Guardians, Arquette looked to forge a similar path for himself. In 2024, as a sophomore, Arquette hit for a .325 batting average, slugging 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 36 RBIs. He earned all-conference honors in the Pac-12 and was selected to the conference's all-defensive team. As a freshman, he played in just 15 games as he battled injuries throughout the 2023 season. Arquette, who was ranked as the best player available in the transfer portal last offseason by Baseball America, picked the Beavers over Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Where is Aiva Arquette from? He announced his intention to play college baseball at Washington on Nov. 10, 2021, and decided to forgo starting his MLB career by opting to go to Seattle rather than sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks after the franchise selected him in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Aiva Arquette MLB draft projections Here's a look at 2025 MLB draft projections for Arquette, who is heavily expected to be a top 10 pick: Gabe Lacques, USA TODAY: First round, pick No. 3 to Seattle Mariners "This might already be too far for monster prep right-hander Seth Hernandez to fall, but the Mariners have made their bones drafting and promptly developing college pitchers. This time, they roll with Arquette, a 6-foot-5 shortstop with considerable power (16 homers, 1.173 OPS) and discipline. Recently inspired an opponent to play a four-man outfield against him." Kiley McDaniel, ESPN: First round, pick No. 4 to the Colorado Rockies: "If Holliday doesn't get here, I'm told the options considered will include the remaining college left-handers (Arnold in this case), Kyson Witherspoon and Arquette. Witherspoon probably goes a bit after this, so he seems like the least likely unless there's an underslot deal." Jim Callis, First round, pick No. 6 to the Pittsburgh Pirates: "The Pirates will mull whichever upper-echelon options remain, with Holliday and Anderson the only ones who appear to have no chance to get to No. 6. This is probably Arquette's floor, though Hernandez also could be very tempting."
