The Landostand makes Silverstone glow as Lando Norris targets British Grand Prix victory
Fans in McLaren orange and the luminous yellow of Norris' helmet gathered for
Formula 1
Friday practice at the new Landostand — actually a series of stands — around the outside of one of Silverstone's most famous corners, the sweeping, lightning fast Stowe.
Much like the banks of Dutch fans who support Max Verstappen at races around Europe, the dedicated stand is a sign of Norris' newfound status in F1 and the strength of his support as he
battles teammate and standings leader Oscar Piastri
.
A sign of status
Norris the driver has emerged as a genuine title contender over the last 12 months, and Norris the brand has grown too.
Norris has spoken in the past about the effort he makes to block out distractions and criticism, but says the Landostand, where he's visiting fans throughout the weekend, is a 'positive distraction' ahead of Sunday's race.
Norris has yet to win at Silverstone in seven attempts in F1 — his best finish was second in 2023 — and said Thursday that he'd swap all his other victories, even his
prized Monaco win
in May, for first place at the British Grand Prix.
'It'll be the one that probably puts the biggest smile on my face, bigger than Monaco, and it's the one that since I was a kid and since I first started watching Formula 1 that I've wanted to win the most,' Norris said.
Norris got the better of Piastri in a race-long battle for the win at last week's
Austrian Grand Prix
. He also won Piastri's home race at the Australian Grand Prix at the start of the year, but Piastri said he doesn't get any extra motivation to beat Norris in front of the British crowd.
'The crowd's always been actually quite nice to me, which has been nice, but I'm not really concerned about that. I'm more focused on trying to get another win on the board,' he said Thursday.
Hamilton's hopes
More than ever, the F1 title race seems to be an all-McLaren affair. Max Verstappen of Red Bull is coming off a first-lap retirement in Austria last week and has been fending off questions
about a potential move to Mercedes
.
Lewis Hamilton has a record nine victories at the British Grand Prix, but a 10th seems a long way off as he endures a difficult first season with Ferrari. He's yet to finish on the podium in a Grand Prix race this season.
'There's always magic here at Silverstone, and so I really have to hope for that,' Hamilton said Thursday. 'I'm hoping that weather, all sorts of things, can help us because we are obviously naturally not as quick as the McLarens and if it stays dry, then they will walk the race.'

'You don't lose class. Faz is a class player, so I'm well happy,' said hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who has played for England with Farrell. 'When it was announced internally, the reaction was good. Faz is a well-known player. He's played quality rugby over many years. 'One thing about Faz is the standards he sets on the training field. He's got (a) bit of an aura about him on training fields, which makes you want to try and train to perfection. I know it's quite hard to perfect training every single day, but he definitely makes standards higher." Farrell was arriving in Sydney on Friday and won't be playing in the tour match against the New South Wales Waratahs at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, when Tadhg Beirne will captain the Lions. 'Owen bring some serious quality. We're looking forward to him coming into the squad and getting to hang out with him,' said Beirne, who played with Farrell during the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa. 'Any type of leadership is only going to enhance the squad. Playing with him four years ago, I've seen all those leadership qualities that he brings. There's the quality of his talent as well, which will do nothing but boost the squad.' ___

Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt goes on injured list and heads for scan of forearm
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list because of right forearm soreness on Friday, one day after his start at Toronto was cut short following three innings. A 29-year-old right-hander, Schmidt was set to have an MRI on Friday. New York also recalled right-hander Scott Effross and left-hander Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Right-hander Clayton Beeter had been optioned to the RailRiders after replacing Schmidt on Thursday night and taking the loss in the 8-5 defeat as the Yankees were swept in a four-game series and dropped out of the AL East lead. Schmidt allowed three runs, four hits that included George Springer's two-run homer and two walks. He said he's been dealing with soreness in his arm since his June 4 outing against Cleveland. 'Earlier on in the game it felt OK,' Schmidt said. 'As the game progressed it sort of tightened up a little bit on me. I felt like the whole night I was kind of guarding it a little bit on the breaking balls, really not ripping them or trying to get a lot behind them.' Schmidt, who had Tommy John surgery in May 2017, is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts. He left a June 21 start against Baltimore after throwing a career-high 103 pitches in seven hitless innings, part of a streak of 28 1/3 scoreless innings. 'Any time you're getting an MRI on your forearm, or whatever the body part is, you're not feeling happy about it,' Schmidt said. 'I'm praying everything is going to be clean and minor. Family of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother gather at chapel for wake after fatal crash
Associated Press GONDOMAR, Portugal (AP) — Family and friends of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother gathered Friday at a church where their bodies have been brought for a wake and funeral, after the Portuguese soccer players were killed in a car crash in Spain. Some hugged and wept before entering the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme, where the funeral for the siblings is planned for Saturday. Mourners left flowers and candles next to a tree outside the chapel were visitation was held. The brothers' parents were in attendance, as well as Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes. Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the head of state, also visited to pay his respects. Gondomar resident Ricardo Alves lamented the loss of the local star as he passed by the chapel. 'It is a great sadness, although I did not know him personally, he was from here and I knew many of his friends from the region where he lived," Alves said. "It is a great loss, he is a young man, with a lot still to give and he had a somewhat tragic fate.' Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family, Spanish government officials said. Jota and his parents both have homes in Gondomar, where he started his playing career as a child. Gondomar is a working-class town next to Porto, where Jota was born. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have caused by a blown tire. Jota's brother Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions. Condolences poured in from Portuguese officials and the world of soccer as news of the accident spread. Liverpool fans laid flower wreaths and team scarves outside Anfield stadium, while a moment of silence was held before Portugal played Spain at the Women's European Championship in Switzerland. The loss was felt sharply in his hometown, especially at his first soccer club, where Jota started playing at age 9. 'He never forgot his roots, nor his friends, because he had a group of friends who were with him in the training here in Gondomar and who he even invited from time to time to go and watch Liverpool games in England," Gondomar SC director Anselmo Serra told The Associated Press. 'They were like a group of friends that he never forgot over the years.' Heading to England via boat Jota and his brother were driving overnight to catch a boat from Santander, on Spain's northern coast, to go to England to rejoin Liverpool, when they crashed, according to Portuguese media. Portuguese sports website Record published a video interview with Miguel Goncalves, who said he worked as a physical therapist for Jota. Gonçalves told Record that Jota was avoiding flying due to a lung condition that he had recently treated. 'I was in his house at night for a last treatment,' Gonçalves said. 'He was proud to have recovered from his pulmonary problem. He was happy to be with his brother. They were excited to spend some time together on the trip.'
