Revealed: Why a secret bet Jannik Sinner made before his Wimbledon triumph could force his legendary coach to make a surprise U-turn

Daily Maila day ago
Jannik Sinner announced at the Australian Open that his coach, Darren Cahill, was set to leave his team at the end of 2025.
But it appears the pair may now be set to make a U-turn on that decision.
It comes after Cahill and Sinner made a secret bet on Saturday night, prior to his Wimbledon final victory against Carlos Alcaraz, that if he won the final, he would be able to make a final call on whether the coach would stay or go.
Cahill has been on the Italian's team since July 2022. In that time, Sinner has won two Grand Slams and has risen to the top of the ATP Tour rankings.
'It will be Darren's last season as my coach,' Sinner said to Eurosport in January.
Cahill, meanwhile, revealed that he will not work with another player as a full-time coach after parting company with Sinner.
But after Sinner's Wimbledon victory, Cahill was quizzed on whether he would revert on his decision to step back from the pro circuit after Sinner's win.
'I don't want to answer this,' he explained.
'You know what? You just need to ask Jannik that.'
And so an Italian reporter at the Championships proceeded to do just that.
'It depends on whether I want to tell the truth or not,' Sinner explained.
He then revealed that Cahill may stay on a little longer than first thought.
'We had a bet before the final,' Sinner explained.
Paraphrasing Cahill, Sinner said: '"If you win tomorrow, you can decide whether or not I stay".'
'Now the choice is mine,' he added.
Sinner made his way to the coach's box after sealing a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4 6-4 6-4 win against Alcaraz on Centre Court.
He embraced Cahill with a big hug, before stepping back down to the court for the trophy presentation.
'I've always looked for a person who is honest, a person who gives me a lot, not necessarily only on the tennis court, but [about] how to live,' he said, reflecting on his decision to appoint Cahill.
Sinner, though, explained he would love the coach to stick around.
'The season is long. There are a lot of tournaments. You never know,' he added.
'But let's just say I won the bet, and so we'll see what happens.'

Revealed: Jude Bellingham's worrying return date as Real Madrid star 'prepares to undergo shoulder surgery this week'

Jude Bellingham will reportedly miss months after he completes a long-awaited shoulder surgery this week. In May, it was confirmed that the Real Madrid star had planned to undergo the procedure after the conclusion of the Club World Cup, which ended on Sunday with Chelsea 's 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Bellingham has struggled with the persistent problem since 2023 and worn strapping on his shoulder when playing for his club and England. He delayed surgery through major competitions like the Champions League and Euro 2024 and the Club World Cup, but his patience ran out this summer. 'I'm fed up with the brace,' the 22-year-old said last month. 'I'm at that point where I'm ready to have a free shoulder and a free body.' It is understood that Bellingham will have to wait until at least mid-October until he suits up again, according to Spanish outlet Sport. The expected rehabilitation time is around three months if all goes well, possibly stretching to four. If the latter reality unfolds, Bellingham may be out until as late as November. Thus, Bellingham is set to miss the start of the 2025–26 season, including the first eight matches of La Liga, first two Champions League games, and possibly the first two international breaks in September and October.

Newcastle United braced for £130m bid for Alexander Isak from Liverpool

Newcastle United are bracing themselves for an official offer from Liverpool for Alexander Isak that could be in the region of £130million. The Times understands that the agent of Isak met Eddie Howe, the Newcastle head coach, at the club's training ground this month. Newcastle had been eager to discuss a new deal to make the Sweden striker the best paid player in the club's history. Since that meeting Newcastle have embarked on their own move to sign the Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike for what would be a club record fee. They have so far failed to match the £87million asking price for the 22-year-old, who they have twice failed to sign, having opened their bidding for the player at £70million. Senior sources at Newcastle were keen to stress on Tuesday afternoon that they have not received any official bid from Liverpool for Isak and do not want to sell the player. However, it is now thought interest in the 25-year-old has been communicated between the two clubs. Isak is training with Newcastle in their Austrian pre-season camp. The club's official X account perhaps pointedly used a picture of Isak out on the grass this morning, with speculation about his future mounting. Isak refused to be drawn on his future during the season when asked what would happen next. He has three years remaining on his £120,000-a-week deal. His agent ended talks of an extension last season and Newcastle were ready to make him the best paid player in the club's history. However, the Times reported this year that Isak wanted to play for a competitive Champions League team. He has scored only once in the competition. Newcastle hoped their qualification for the Champions League would help in their bid to keep him. Liverpool had previously played down any interest in the player, which was reported in The Times in June, but always with the caveat that there may be interest if they were given encouragement a player as good as Isak was available. Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Ekitike themselves. If they cannot agree a deal for Isak, it is thought they could yet return for the French striker. Newcastle have already spent £55million on the Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and are locked in negotiation with Burnley for the goalkeeper James Trafford. Isak, who moved to Newcastle three years ago for £62million from Real Sociedad, scored 27 goals last season, including Newcastle's second in their 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool. The Anfield club have already spent £100million on the attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayern Munich and on Tuesday rejected a £59million offer form Bayern Munich for Luis Díaz. Darwin Núñez is likely to leave the club this summer.
