Nasscom expects more layoffs as IT industry faces major transition

India Today9 hours ago
India's top IT industry body, Nasscom, which represents India's $268 billion IT services sector, has said that more job cuts may happen in the coming months as the sector goes through major changes, reported The Economics Times.Nasscom called this period an 'inflection point' for the industry. It said that clients around the world now expect more speed, flexibility, and innovation. As a result, many IT companies are rethinking how they deliver services, and what kind of talent they need. This comes just days after Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country's largest IT employer, announced it would cut 2% of its global staff. Around 12,000 mid- and senior-level employees will be let go as the company adjusts its team structure. In a statement, Nasscom explained that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are becoming key parts of business operations. Because of this, older skillsets are being reviewed, and some employees may have to make career transitions. However, the body also shared a hopeful note. It said that tech continues to be a powerful growth driver, and with each wave of change, new jobs and opportunities are created. That's why it's important for professionals to keep learning and updating their skills. The industry has already made good progress in this direction. By the end of FY25, more than 1.5 million people had been trained in AI and GenAI-related skills. Out of these, over 95,000 employees in large listed IT companies have earned advanced certificates in areas like AI-native cloud and applied intelligence. As AI takes centre stage, hiring patterns are likely to change too. Companies will now look for deeper domain knowledge and highly specialised expertise.advertisementWhile job losses may happen in the short term, new roles are also on the horizon. For now, the key to staying relevant in the IT sector seems to be continuous learning and adapting to the future.- EndsMust Watch

Pete Hegseth in hot water: Pentagon boss told to shape up or face the axe, sources say

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been warned in private to change his behavior or he could be removed from his job. The warning came after a series of scandals involving Hegseth that have embarrassed the Pentagon and the White House. One major controversy started when Hegseth fired three Pentagon staffers this spring — Darin Selnick, Dan Caldwell, and Colin Carroll — accusing them of leaking information, but without offering solid proof, say Politico sources. White House officials and aides to Vice President JD Vance even began their own investigation to find out if the fired staffers were actually responsible for leaks — but they found no evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo ALSO READ: Bryan Johnson plans to shut down multi-million dollar anti-aging startup blueprint amid scaling and credibility challenges Hegseth's team couldn't provide any clear proof that the three men leaked anything, which made the situation worse. A person close to Hegseth told Politico, 'There's going to be more shoes to drop all around,' suggesting more problems or scandals might come out soon. Live Events More scandals keep coming Another major scandal involved a Signal group chat, where members of the Trump administration, including Hegseth, discussed plans to bomb Houthi rebel targets in Yemen. The Signal chat accidentally included Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic, who was not supposed to be there, which made the situation even more embarrassing, as stated by Politico report. Hegseth also reportedly tried to stop U.S. military aid from reaching Ukraine, even though that decision was not his to make. President Trump later reversed Hegseth's decision and pretended he didn't know who had stopped the aid, even though Hegseth was sitting right next to him during a press interaction. Last week, the Daily Mail reported that several Pentagon officials now want Hegseth to be removed because of all the controversies. The Washington Post also reported that the Signal chat included messages that may have contained classified U.S. government information, which could lead to serious consequences, as per the report by Politico. Some people close to Hegseth are now urging him to apologize to the three aides he fired, in hopes of calming down the crisis. One source told Politico: 'If there's any chance of Pete resetting and ensuring that whatever time he has left in this position is well served, he's got to. Otherwise Pete is just doubling down on the lie.' White House still supports him According to the reports, despite everything, the White House and Pentagon are still standing by Hegseth, and have not taken steps to remove him yet, multiple outlets confirm. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told the Daily Beast that under Trump and Hegseth, military recruitment is breaking records and that Hegseth is 'reviving the warrior ethos' and putting 'America First.' ALSO READ: Texas lake hits 100% capacity after 15 years — officials urge caution amid flooding fears White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told the Daily Beast that President Trump has 'full confidence' in Hegseth, and praised his leadership of the Department of Defense. Kelly also highlighted that Hegseth played a 'critical role' in Operation Midnight Hammer, a military mission that bombed Iranian military targets. She said Hegseth is prioritizing warfighters, eliminating terrorists, and restoring 'common sense' to the U.S. military. However, not everyone agrees with the praise — one anonymous critic told Politico: 'If they want to give Pete a pass—fine. Because at the end of the day, he's going to keep f---ing up.' Vice President JD Vance's office did not respond when The Daily Beast reached out for a comment on the situation, as per the report by Politico. FAQs Q1. Why is Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth facing calls to be fired? Pete Hegseth is facing calls to be fired because of scandals involving wrongful firings, secret chats leaking information, and blocking military aid without proof. Q2. Is the White House still supporting Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary? Yes, the White House says it has full confidence in Pete Hegseth and supports his leadership despite the controversies.

Live Events The timing couldn't be better for Surat's industrial renaissance. As geopolitical tensions reshape global supply chains and AI overhauls manufacturing, this city's diverse MSME ecosystem is positioning itself to capture opportunities worth tens of billions of transformation is most visible in Surat's diamond district, where Jayanti Savaliya of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) oversees an industry that has evolved from manual processes to AI-driven precision in just two decades."Changes that took a decade earlier are now happening in two years," Savaliya shared, describing how robotic machines now handle diamond sorting while AI reduces jewellery design rendering from days to minutes. Savaliya was part of the panel 'From looms to labs: How Surat's MSMEs can lead India's next wave of industrial innovation'. The discussion was one of several insightful conversations at the ET Make in India SME Regional Summit in Surat, which took place on July 18. The summit had IDBI as banking and lending partner and Canon as tech other panellists were: Ashish Gujrati, Managing Director, Aditya Textile Solutions and Past President, SGCCI; Bikash Chandra Naik, Zonal Head, NSIC; and Prashant Patel, Past President of FISME and Director, RK Synthesis former President Trump's trade policies have become Surat's secret weapon. His tariffs hit China with 40% duties on jewellery while India faces just 16-26%, creating what Savaliya called "a huge opportunity" as manufacturing shifts from Chinese factories to Surat's 600 new jewellery tariff advantage extends beyond diamonds. Ashish Gujrati pointed to recent developments in Bangladesh, where a 35% tariff has global garment buyers scrambling for alternatives. Surat, which produces 65% of India's man-made fiber, stands ready to fill the numbers are staggering: Surat's garment industry is growing 25% annually, and the city has a $30 billion export opportunity in man-made fiber textiles alone. With global MMF exports projected to grow from $7.7 billion to over $73 billion, Surat's comprehensive ecosystem — spanning the entire value chain within 45km — positions it as a natural city's MSME transformation runs deeper than favourable trade winds. Prashant Patel, described a fundamental shift in business philosophy. "Historically, Indian companies avoided R&D, opting for copy-paste models," he noted at the ET SME Summit panel in Surat. "But since Covid-19, this mindset has changed."Today, Surat companies invest in developing new technologies, not just new products. This includes process optimisation that reduces raw material usage and addresses pollution concerns, which are critical factors for accessing international markets increasingly focused on government infrastructure supporting this innovation has evolved too. Bikash Chandra Naik spoke about NSIC's Single Point Registration Scheme, which reserves 25% of government procurement for small competitive edge increasingly lies in its skilled workforce. Despite China's scale and cost advantages, nine out of 10 diamonds globally are still processed in Surat, a testament to the city's unmatched expertise in precision advantage is expanding beyond traditional sectors. While Jaipur currently dominates gemstone processing, Savaliya underlined the untapped potential for Surat to leverage its existing infrastructure and skilled labour in this adjacent obstacles remain. Land costs in Surat now exceed those in competing industrial centers like Bharuch and Vapi. Skilled workers command premium salaries that stretch MSME budgets, while the lack of shared R&D infrastructure forces companies to either invest crores of rupees in equipment or relocate to areas with better common challenges haven't dampened ambitions. With the PM MITRA textile park awaiting implementation and India's global textile trade share poised for recovery from its current 2.94%, Surat's MSME ecosystem appears ready to capitalise on a convergence of technological advancement and geopolitical the panel discussion at the ET Make in India SME Regional Summit - Surat revealed, the city's transformation from a traditional manufacturing hub to an innovation-driven ecosystem reflects a broader shift in Indian industry, one where MSMEs aren't just adapting to global changes, but actively shaping a world where supply chains are being redrawn and AI is redefining manufacturing, Surat's diverse industrial base and rapid technology adoption may well position it to lead India's next wave of industrial innovation. Serial moonlighter Soham Parekh speaks out as 12,000 TCS layoffs rattle Indian IT sector: 'Don't wait for...'

India's largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), shocked the IT industry when it announced its plans to reduce around 2% of its global workforce. The move, which will impact over 12,000 employees, was criticised by many, while many called it inevitable as AI becomes more prominent. Soham Parekh, the Indian techie who was accused of working at multiple startups simultaneously, shared his views on the TCS layoffs.(X/@mhadifilms) Soham Parekh, the Indian techie who was accused of working at multiple startups simultaneously, also shared his views on the move and gave out advice to tech workers. Reacting to a post that claimed "TCS will freeze the hiring of experienced personnel and pause annual salary increases globally," Parekh advised techies to outwork the system. "Don't wait for handouts. Learn fast. Build harder. Your skills are your leverage. Outwork the system. Outlearn the gatekeepers. Outbuild the giants," he said. Parekh made headlines after several tech CEO's accused him of moonlighting across multiple startups and scamming employers. However, his former colleagues labelled him an excellent developer. While Parekh admitted to working at multiple startups at the same time, he claimed he did so to overcome financial difficulties. Meanwhile, TCS has claimed that the layoffs will affect middle and senior management, and the rehiring will not be feasible for these roles. 'Several reskilling and redeployment programs have been in progress. However, some associates will be released as their roles cannot be restructured to match future demands,' it said. The company is pursuing a broader transformation strategy that will involve evolving technologies like AI, expanding into new markets, and aligning talent with future business needs. Those laid off will receive severance benefits, career counselling, and outplacement services.
