Mixed Martial Arts-Relentless Chimaev beats du Plessis to win UFC middleweight title
Chimaev scored a unanimous decision victory on the judges' scorecards.
He set the tone in the opening minute, shooting for an early takedown to bring the fight to the mat and pinning the South African in a crucifix position before raining punches with his left hand, but the blows did little damage and du Plessis survived.
Round two began in much the same fashion as the 31-year-old again brought the fight to the mat. This time he stuck to his opponent's back like a limpet to threaten with knee strikes and choke attempts, and Du Plessis was spent in the third and fourth rounds in similarly poor positions.
There was a brief sliver of hope late in the final frame as du Plessis finally managed to get himself into a threatening position, but it was too little, too late, and Chimaev was declared the winner, with all three judges scoring the fight 50 to 44 in his favour.
"I never game-plan. I just came in, work like I do in the gym. That guy is strong, I couldn't finish, respect that guy, he's the only champion who was saying my name. This guy has real heart, a real lion, a real African lion," Chimaev said, the new championship belt around his waist.
Du Plessis took his dethroning with good grace before promising to win the title back.

All Black lock Tuipulotu likely to miss second Pumas test
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox All Blacks lock Patrick Tuipulotu looks likely to miss New Zealand's second Rugby Championship test against Argentina this weekend after being taken to hospital in the wake of the 41-24 win over the Pumas last weekend. Assistant coach Jason Ryan said the veteran second-row forward sustained a head knock after replacing skipper Scott Barrett in the 56th minute in Cordoba last Saturday. "Patty went off to hospital and had a couple of check-ups as well, which we are monitoring over the next 24 hours," Ryan told New Zealand media from South America. "Patty is potentially unlikely for this week." Ryan said Barrett had been withdrawn from the contest to manage his return from an Achilles injury and would be fit for Saturday's clash in Buenos Aires. Fabian Holland, who started alongside Barrett in the second row, has also been given a clean bill of health despite being taken off with cramp late in the Cordoba clash. Number eight Wallace Sititi and loosehead prop Tamaiti Williams could be available for Saturday's match after missing New Zealand's tournament-opener as they continue to recover from ankle and knee operations respectively, Ryan said. The hardfought victory over Argentina combined with Australia's stunning upset of world champions South Africa will send the All Blacks back to the top of the world rankings for the first time since 2021 later on Monday. The Springboks will drop from the top spot they have occupied for most of the last five years to third behind Ireland. The Wallabies will remain in sixth behind France and England. "It just shows you how tough test footy is, how close it is, and the margins," head coach Scott Robertson said in post-match news conference in Cordoba. "We're pleased we're number one, but our sights will probably be more set on next week's match than rankings." REUTERS

Alvarez showed his quality in the 37th minute, curling a superb free kick into the top corner to give Atletico the lead after Espanyol's Leandro Cabrera had pushed Conor Gallagher. The Argentine came close again in the second half when he collected the ball inside the box, skipped past two defenders and fired a low shot against the bar. The hosts levelled in the 73rd when a long set-piece dropped into the box behind the defence, allowing Rubio to race onto the ball and slide it past goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Six minutes from time, Milla scored a spectacular winner, meeting a cross with a diving header that arched over Oblak and nestled inside the far post to complete the turnaround. REUTERS
