US to eventually reduce military bases in Syria to one

Ammon03-06-2025
Ammon News - The United States has begun reducing its military presence in Syria with a view to eventually closing all but one of its bases there, the US envoy for the country has said in an interview.
Six months after the ouster of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar Assad, the United States is steadily drawing down its presence as part of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), a military task force launched in 2014 to fight the Daesh group (IS).
'The reduction of our OIR engagement on a military basis is happening,' the US envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, said in an interview with Turkiye's NTV late on Monday.
'We've gone from eight bases to five to three. We'll eventually go to one.'
But he admitted Syria still faced major security challenges under interim leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, whose Islamist-led coalition toppled Assad in December.
Assad's ouster brought an end to Syria's bloody 14-year civil war, but the new authorities have struggled to contain recent bouts of sectarian violence.
Barrack, who is also the US ambassador to Turkiye, called for the 'integration' of the country's ethnic and religious groups.
'It's very tribal still. It's very difficult to bring it together,' he said.
But 'I think that will happen,' he added.

Trump: US would help assure Ukraine's security in a peace deal

Ammon News - U.S. President Donald Trump told President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear. Trump made the pledge during an extraordinary summit at the White House, where he hosted Zelenskiy and a group of European allies following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help," Trump told reporters, adding that European countries would be involved. "They are a first line of defence because they're there, but we'll help them out." Zelenskiy hailed the promise as "a major step forward," adding that the guarantees would be "formalized on paper within the next week to 10 days" and saying Ukraine offered to buy about $90 billion worth of U.S. weapons. The tone on Monday was much warmer than a disastrous Oval Office meeting that saw Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly criticize the Ukrainian leader in February. But a peace deal still appeared far from imminent. Just before the talks began, Russia's Foreign Ministry ruled out the deployment of troops from NATO countries to help secure a peace deal, adding complications to Trump's offer. Both Trump and Zelenskiy said they hoped Monday's gathering would eventually lead to three-way talks with Putin, whose forces have been slowly grinding forward in eastern Ukraine. In a social media post late on Monday, Trump said he had called the Russian leader and begun arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy, to be followed by a trilateral summit among the three presidents. Trump told European leaders that Putin suggested that sequence, according to a source in the European delegation. While the Kremlin has not publicly announced its agreement, a senior U.S. administration official said the Putin-Zelenskiy meeting could take place in Hungary. The pair will meet within the next two weeks, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The last direct talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Turkey in June. Putin declined Zelenskiy's public invitation to meet him face-to-face there and sent a low-level delegation instead. CEASEFIRE? Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said in audio remarks on Telegram on Monday that Trump and Putin had discussed "the possibility of raising the level of representatives from the Ukrainian and Russian sides ... participating in the mentioned direct negotiations." Meanwhile, European leaders - who rushed to Washington to back up Zelenskiy - urged Trump to insist that Putin agree to a ceasefire in the 3-1/2-year-old war before any talks can advance. Trump previously backed that proposal but reversed course after meeting with Putin on Friday, instead adopting Moscow's position that any peace agreement be comprehensive. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he liked the concept of a ceasefire but the two sides could work on a peace deal while the fighting continued. "I wish they could stop, I'd like them to stop," he said. "But strategically that could be a disadvantage for one side or the other." Reuters

Cyprus dispatches 1,200 metric tons of humanitarian aid for Gaza

Ammon News - Cyprus has dispatched 1,200 metric tons of humanitarian aid for Gaza by sea via Ashdod in Israel, its foreign ministry said on Tuesday. The pre-screened cargo would be transferred without additional security checks on arrival in Ashdod and with international humanitarian organisation World Central Kitchen the final contractor and distributor, the Cyprus Foreign Ministry said. "The entire undertaking is under the auspices of the U.N. delivery mechanism," it said. Gaza has been devastated by Israel's nearly two-year-long military assault, which has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities who do not distinguish between fighters and civilians. The ground and air war has also created a hunger crisis with aid encountering significant delays. More than 200 Gazans have died of malnutrition or starvation in the war, according to health authorities. Israel says its offensive is in self-defence after Hamas militants crossed the border into Israel in October 2023 killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 others hostage. Cyprus and Malta contributed the bulk of aid, and there were contributions from organisations from the United States, Italy, the Sovereign Order of Malta and Kuwait. Input of the United Arab Emirates to the operation was essential, Cyprus said. The east Mediterranean island has been used to transit aid to Gaza in the past. Facilities on the island remained at the disposal of the international community as an additional humanitarian channel, the foreign ministry said.

Gunmen kill 2 Syrian security forces in Tartus

Published August 19th, 2025 - 07:33 GMT ALBAWABA - Two Syrian security personnel were killed by gunmen at a checkpoint in the northwestern city of Tartous. Syrian state media SANA quoted a security source as saying that a car was suspected by the country's Internal Security patrol, and it was parked on the side of the road. When the patrol approached to inspect it, one of the individuals inside the vehicle opened fire directly at the security personnel, killing two security forces. The source explained that the gunmen in the car fled, stressing that the relevant authorities are working to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Since the overthrow of Bashar Assad's regime, the new Syrian administration has been making intensive efforts to maintain security in the country, including pursuing remnants of the ousted regime who are attempting to foment chaos. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
