Japan are ramping up efforts to dismantle a loose network of romance scammers who use dating apps to target disabled people, luring victims to fraudulent bars and saddling them with exorbitant bills through deceptive drinking games and false claims.

The latest case – involving a visually impaired man who was swindled out of about 700,000 yen (US$4,870) – has cast a spotlight on how such 'anonymous and fluid' crime groups operate with impunity by cycling in new perpetrators for each incident, according to Tokyo police.
The man had met a woman on a dating app designed for people with disabilities. She introduced herself as 'Risa' and offered to take him to a bar in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district in February.
What he did not know, investigators later said, was that the woman – identified by police as Rina Sugawara – was employed by the bar and working in concert with its staff.

The bar offered an all-you-can-drink plan for 5,000 yen, but during their visit, Sugawara reportedly encouraged him to order additional drinks and engage in a drinking game that involved taking shots as a penalty. The victim, who rarely consumed alcohol, soon became intoxicated.

Hong Kong police have arrested two men and are hunting for a third in connection with two burglaries at an antiques warehouse where more than 100 jade pieces, antiques and accessories valued at over HK$2 million (US$254,860) were stolen. 'The victim's initial estimate places the total value of the stolen items at over HK$2 million, but the exact amount and losses are still being tallied.' An Eastern district crime squad took over the investigation, poring over a large amount of security footage, including from the force's citywide SmartView camera system. 'Coupled with intelligence analysis, police arrested two men suspected to be involved in the case [on Friday] and successfully recovered a portion of the stolen goods,' Chan said, adding that the investigation was ongoing. Inspector Tse Yuen-ying of the district crime squad said the first burglary on May 14 was a solo job. The same suspect allegedly returned with two accomplices on Thursday.

Retired Hong Kong priest arrested for alleged sexual assault of minor in 1990s
Hong Kong police have arrested a 66-year-old retired priest on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor on two occasions more than 30 years ago, the Post has learned. A source said on Saturday that a woman, now 44, filed a police report late last month alleging she had been sexually assaulted twice at a church in Sham Shui Po between September 1993 and March 1994. She was 13 years old at the time. The man was accused of sexually assaulting the minor while she was studying inside the church. The source said the assaults were alleged to have taken place at the Hong Kong & Macau Lutheran Living Stone Church. Management had assisted police with their investigation and helped look into whether there were other potential victims, the insider said. Police said officers had arrested a 66-year-old man in Fanling district on Friday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16 years of age, buggery with a girl under 21 and indecency with a child under 16. The man has been released on bail pending further investigation, and he must report to police later this month.

Hong Kong constable's condition improving after fall from bridge: police chief
The condition of a Hong Kong police officer who fell 10 metres (32.8 feet) off a bridge to escape a crash is improving after he underwent an operation, the force's commissioner has said, adding that the man remains in an intensive care unit. Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming on Saturday also expressed his gratitude towards Tuen Mun Hospital staff who operated on the constable for their dedication. '[His] situation is becoming stable; we'll closely monitor the situation,' Chow said. A Hospital Authority spokeswoman said the injured officer was still in critical condition as of 9.30am on Saturday. Asked about hate speech directed at police after the incident, Chow said he had not read the comments online, but hoped that people could look at the matter 'in a humane way'. On Friday, 10 people were injured when a double-decker bus crashed into a police vehicle. The injured included the officer, who fell 10 metres from the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor when the impact happened. His condition was listed as critical in the immediate aftermath of the accident.
