90s pop icon admits they lost out on Glastonbury performance for sad reason

Daily Mirror21-06-2025
Steps star Ian 'H' Watkins has revealed that the group was asked to perform with the Bee Gees at Glastonbury on the Pyramid stage but was unable to arrange the logistics in time
Steps star Ian 'H' Watkins is one of the most memorable stars of the legendary 90's pop group who took the world by storm with a plethora of hits across the world. But now, it has come to light that there was one part of his pop career that he still holds a level of regret over - and that was missing out on performing at Glastonbury Festival.
The group's song Tragedy attracted the attention of the organisers of Glastonbury which led to an invitation to perform at the sought after Pyramid stage.

At the time, the hit song sold more than 1.2million copies in the UK.

Speaking to Metro, the pop star explained: "The Bee Gees asked us to join them on stage. But it was a really late request, and we literally couldn't get it all together in time."
He added: "Of course, some of them have passed away now, so that will never happen again. But that's another little jewel in the Steps crown."
But with the group's musical Here and Now, which is set to tour around the UK ending up at London's West End, it seems the prospect of appearing on the bill of the iconic festival is clearly still on the group's mind.
Ian continued: "We're the only ones, really, from that era that have all the original members and are still going, so it feels like we've earned our stripes by now."
At the time of the height of his career, Ian explained that his sex life was the subject of interest among the media and felt unable to come out as gay.

Recalling the moment he followed in the media footsteps of Stephen Gately and Will Young, who were revealed as gay, Ian said he received a phone call he had been desperate to avoid while on holiday.
He told the publication: "They knew where I was, who I was with, and why I was there – I had a boyfriend."
He added: "Immediately, I flew back from holiday, told my loved ones, told my family, told my parents, and then the next day, they didn't run the story, because I didn't give them quotes. But they threatened me for many years, and I felt like my coming out story was taken from me; my power was taken away, so it was a really emotional, dark time for me."

But Ian was not alone. Boyzone star Stephen Gately and N'SYNC's Lance Bass was also struggling with press attention over their sexuality.
Ian added: "If the press knew you were gay, it was a really tricky thing to be seen together or to even admit that you were friends with another closeted gay person."
He then decided to forge firm friendships with his bandmates and other stars including Britany Spears.
Ian continued: "All of her dancers were gay anyway. People thought I was dating Brittany a long time ago, but that obviously wasn't the case – that was strange."

Strictly 2025 line-up confirms sixth contestant is social media star

The first celebrities for the Strictly Come Dancing's 2025 line-up have been confirmed. The BBC reality competition series hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman is back for another year of jaw-dropping dance routines and emotional journeys for our cohort of famed contestants. Strictly has had a difficult couple of years after pros Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima were removed from the show (and replaced) after behavioural accusations from former partners came out against them. Earlier this month, the long-running series came under scrutiny once more with reports that two stars had used cocaine, and one veteran worker had been offered drugs at a party. Meanwhile, beloved pro Gorka Marquez confirmed he would not be competing this year, much to everyone's devastation, but would make a cameo in some of the group performances. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Amid all changes, however, it remains one of BBC's flagship shows with a fresh set of faces ready to take to the dance floor. So who is in the official 2025 line-up? The sixth and latest contestant twirling onto the ballroom will be George Clarke. Clarke is known as George Clarkey online, where he is a YouTuber, podcaster and social media star known to millions for his comedy content. He also co-hosts The Useless Hotline Podcast. On joining Strictly, he said: 'Never thought I'd say this, but I'm doing Strictly! Honestly, I've got no idea what I'm doing but I'm excited to get stuck in and potentially fall over a fair bit.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Balvinder Sopal was confirmed as the latest celebrity to join Strictly Come Dancing on Tuesday morning during Good Morning Britain. Richard Arnold was in Walford to confirm that an EastEnders legend was joining the ranks. 'I can't stop butterflies. Every time I think about it, they just go, so, yeah,' the actress who plays Suki in the soap said. 'I dabbled a little bit. I did ballroom and Latin as a kind of hobby, and I really love it. And I think when you've got a passion for something, you're naturally kind of inclined to enjoy it. So I'll definitely enjoy it.' 'I don't know if I'll be any good!,' she added, saying she loved the drama of Latin dancing. 'It is about telling the story with your feet, with your body, and not speaking. So, you know, won't have to learn any lines, which would be great, but it'll be like learning a new language, I think!' she said. She confirmed she'd still be appearing on EastEnders during her stint, and wasn't sure how she'd hack it – but was excited to find out. She added that she thought her mother would be proud of her: 'This is her dream. Actually, I think she would have been extremely proud. So, yeah, hold mom's legacy.' The BBC show confirmed three new names who will battle it out for the glitterball trophy, with Dani Dyer the first to walk out into the studio. How hard was it keeping this a secret? 'So hard,' Dani said on the show. 'Especially when there was speculation and stuff, people kept coming up to me, and I'm such a bad liar. I'm going to have to send so many apologies.' The 28-year-old reality star, and daughter of national treasure Danny Dyer, was rumoured to have signed a pre-show contract earlier this year. When asked what her parents made of the news, Dyer said they're 'so excited'. 'It's just such a fun, magical show,' she said, 'and to be asked to do it was just such an honour. So, yeah, they're just so excited for me.' She did admit she's nervous though. 'I think it's picking up the routines and being on live telly, it petrifies me. It's just the whole thing of being able to perform.' The training starts now! Next up on The One Show was Alex Kingston, who tuned in from a holiday in Italy to confirm she had signed up for the Strictly ballroom. The 62-year-old actor, who played River Song on Doctor Who (aka The Doctor's wife) opposite three Doctors on screen, was one of the names rumoured to be involved ahead of the line-up announcements this week. 'I was super excited, and now I actually am terrified,' she told the programme. Speaking about why she decided to take the plunge, Alex said it was 2024 contestant and fellow actor Sarah Hadland who convinced her. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'In 2019 I did a play with Sarah Hadland and we both admitted that we desperately wanted to be in Strictly,' she told hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp. 'When I then saw Sarah performing last year, I just thought, she's done it, and not only has she done it, she went all the way. 'I reached out and just asked her what her experience of having been part of the show was, and she was really honest with me about how hard it is, how overwhelming it can be, but also how it absolutely changed her life, and she would do it again in a heartbeat. 'It just gave me the chance to make the decision for myself as to whether I wanted to go for it. And I just thought, I'm in my 60s, just go for it.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was the third contestant to appear on The One Show, confirming he will be swapping the pitch for the ballroom. Alex Jones in the BBC One studio was clearly in shock when he appeared, saying she didn't think he would ever agree to it. The ex pro footballer said his four daughters were part of the reason he decided to sign on up to the show. The 53-year-old said from the red studio sofa: 'A few years ago, I would say the same, but I'm a father of all girls, and Strictly is part of our home life. I've got into it. I like the show, and let's have a go. 'Honestly, I have no idea what to expect. I have a little bit of rhythm.' Jimmy played for clubs including Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea, carving out a prolific goal-scoring career in the Premier League and across Europe. Since retiring, Jimmy has become a familiar face in football punditry as well as a football club manager of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town. He also served as an assistant coach for the England national team. Olympian and star of BBC's Gladiators, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, was the first famous face confirmed to grace the Strictly ballroom this autumn. The TV personality already took part in last year's Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special with pro-partner Nancy Xu and now he is back for round two. 'After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. 'I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track,' he said in a statement. The multi-gold-medal-winning Team GB sprinter was announced as Nitro in the high-stakes BBC gameshow in 2023. He will no doubt be bringing all his skills to the dance floor. If there is one thing Harry is used to, it's being the best of the best, not only competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics but also securing the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 2005 aged 17. Not to mention being a three-time European champion and two-time Commonwealth champion. So he'll be a force to be reckoned with on the dancefloor. As we eagerly await the full line-up, there is still plenty of speculation over who will be joining the confirmed names this year. There are a couple of celebrities who have come out at the top of the rumour mill – including Natalie Imbruglia, 50, and Delta Goodrem, 40, who are said to be in talks to join the show. More Trending A source told The Sun: 'Delta and Natalie would bring some glamour to the programme, and be some of this year's most eagerly anticipated competitors. 'If all three former Neighbours stars end up performing, the Strictly dance floor will end up looking more like Ramsay Street. But the next 24 hours of discussions between execs and the stars' reps are critical.' Strictly Come Dancing returns on September 20, 2025, a week later than its usual start date. Zoe Ball makes 'sad' revelation after brutal response from daughter Nelly

Zoe Ball's insight into her family life comes after her dad Johnny Ball made a revelation about her relationship with her ex-husband Fatboy Slim Zoe Ball has opened up about a "sad" shift in the bond with her daughter Nelly. The 54-year-old is mum to 24-year-old son Woody Cook, and Nelly, 14, with her former husband Norman Cook, who is better known as Fatboy Slim. ‌ Speaking about sleeping arrangements on her latest Dig It podcast episode with Jo Whiley, Zoe expressed disappointment over her daughter's reluctance to share overnight stays with her. ‌ The BBC Radio 2 host revealed: "I love going to sleep in the same bed as Nel. When she's here, I'm like, 'Do you want to stay the night? It's a girl's night - wanna stay the night?' ‌ "And it's really sad when she just looks at me and is like, 'No mother' and shuts the door. Or looks at me and says, 'No mother, go to bed now'. "And my favourite thing [is], if you do get to share a bed with your kids, sometimes, I know it sounds creepy, but just looking at their faces as they sleep, it doesn't matter how old they are, you look at them and I always have those moments of just remembering their faces when they were babies and it's like, 'Look at you, all grown up'." ‌ Zoe frequently offers followers glimpses into her home life through her Instagram account, which features snaps of her children, her well-known father Johnny Ball, and her late mum Julia. However, one thing she prefers to keep private from fans is details about her love life. In photographs shared by The Sun in June, the broadcaster was spotted clasping hands with an unknown gentleman at Glastonbury Festival. ‌ A source revealed to the publication: "Zoe is down at Glastonbury as a punter and has brought her new boyfriend along for the ride. "They seemed blissfully happy and were strolling along holding hands. ‌ "She was really smiling at him as they walked along and he was very protective of Zoe and put his hand across her back. "People were doing double takes at her bloke though because he looks a lot like Fatboy. It's so great to see Zoe smiling again." Zoe was married to Fatboy Slim from 1999 to 2016, and according to her father Johnny, they're now closer than ever before. Chatting to Boom Radio, he revealed: "They're very good friends today. They're divorced, but they're better... if you like, they're closer today than they were when they were married. And that's a lovely thing." After their divorce, Zoe began dating Billy Yates, who tragically took his own life at the age of 40 in 2017. The TV host later embarked on a romance with Michael Reed, but their six-year relationship ended after they reportedly grew apart.

Taylor Swift's 12th album theories explained by superfans

Taylor Swift has revealed she is set to release her twelfth album, which will be titled The Life of a Showgirl. The 35-year-old iconic singer is fresh off the back of the Eras Tour where she performed across the globe in one of the most impressive and highly publicised music tours ever. While the singer only released her eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, last year, she has stunned fans by announcing a new album is imminent. Enlisting her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his brother, Jason Kelce, Swift teased her upcoming appearance on the brothers' mega-popular New Heights podcast with a clip announcing the album title. In the video, which was shared on Instagram at 12.12am ET on Tuesday, Taylor said: 'This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl.' The cover art for the record remained obscured in the clip, but blurred images and clues suggest that a glittery orange will be the defining shade of this era, with Travis covered in golden confetti at the end of the clip. Travis exclaimed at the end of the snippet: 'TS12!' Fans have scrambled to work out some of the Easter eggs the star has dropped about the album so far, with a variety of plausible and completely far-fetched theories coming out of the woodwork. Here's a breakdown of some of the leading fan theories from Swifties. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Our Tay-Tay isn't afraid of a genre shift. Starting off as a country star, she moved into a more mainstream pop vibe, but has explored other genres throughout her music career. Her 'sister' albums, Folklore and Evermore, released in 2020 and 2021 respectively, had a more folksy feel, with her 2022 release Midnights changing the tempo for a more upbeat pop album. She brought things back to a mid-tempo emotional album with her blockbuster 31-song album, The Tortured Poets Department, in 2024. This will be Taylor's twelfth album (excluding live albums and Swift's remade albums). Orders for the album will be sent out before October 13. The album is called The Life of a Showgirl. The album is linked to the colours orange and green. Swiftie superfan and Metro music reporter, Danni Scott, told Metro that she thinks TS12 is set to be an upbeat pop album for a few reasons. 'Taylor tends to do a colourful pop album, and then her more deep-divey albums tend to be black and white or muted tones. So the glittery orange suggests it's going to be very poppy. She then reflected on the singer's Era's Tour and the use of orange in her wardrobe. 'I mean, on The Era's Tour, her most sort of glittery orange outfits were worn during Lover and 1989 and Midnight. I think if she were Easter egging, as she loves to do, those albums were the ones that had orange outfits.' Danni even suggested that the new album will be much like her fifth studio album, which was her most straightforward pop-heavy album. 'I think her sound has probably matured quite a lot since 1989, and I think Taylor is very chart hungry in this era that she is in. She knows anything she releases will go to the top of the charts, but I think she probably wants a bit of a safe bet, as Tortured Poets wasn't well reviewed when it initially came out, so my gut is saying we're gonna get 1989 but with deeper, more emotional songs.' She added: '1989 2.0. That's my prediction.' And Danni isn't alone in her pop-album hypothesis, with fans echoing her predictions online. 'The life of a showgirl is 1989s mature employed fun cool older sister I can just feel it,' said alIiesversion on X. The artwork remains a mystery, but it seems that the colours orange and green will be prominently featured. Taylor's website now displays a mysterious blurred orange and green cover, alongside options to purchase CD, cassette and vinyl versions of the album. Behind Taylor on the New Heights podcast set were several books with covers in orange hues. The books featured the works of modernist and neo-expressionist artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Marc Chagall and Ruth Asawa, as well as abstract painter Mark Rothko. Fans also spotted that Taylor may have hinted at the colour scheme in her Midnights album when she released the music video for Anti-Hero. A grab from the video showed Taylor dressed in white with a bow in her hair, in keeping with her TTPD look, and another in an orange and green glittery showgirl look – could this be a The Life of A Showgirl hint? Along with the orange colour scheme, green has also been showcased on Taylor's website, with fans hypothesising that the two shades could have a deeper meaning. Some have suggested that the colours symbolise copper before and after oxidation – best highlighted by the Statue of Liberty. 'The colour scheme is copper oxidizing because a showgirl is on a pedestal for the world and over time, in the public eye they lose their shine… the weathering from being the target for the world's misogyny. #TheLifeOfAShowgirl' said fearlesskait on X. 'Exposure to air causes copper to oxidize, from orange to pale green. 'The Life of a Showgirl' is to be exposed to the world—to be put on a pedestal and observed as you change, judged as you lose your luster. Our tortured poet w/ the metaphors can't wait to listen! #taylorswift,' added camitwomeyy. Fans have spotted that searching 'Ts12' on TikTok results in orange confetti exploding across the screen. While the orange colour scheme of the album is all but confirmed now, it's a fun little addition for fans that adds to the excitement of the album's release. The Clean singer has hinted she has worked with Max Martin and Shellback on this album. Soon after the announcement landed, billboards appeared in New York and Nashville advertising the pop idol's new Spotify playlist, And, baby, that's show business for you. All 22 tracks are songs from her back catalogue produced by the two studio wizards, who she worked with on the albums Red, 1989, and Reputation, suggesting that they could be the makers of the new album. Additionally, the album features some of Taylor's most well-received pop hits, including 22, Blank Space, End Game, Style, Wildest Dreams, and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Before announcing the title of her twelfth album, Taylor Nation, aka the Official Taylor Swift Social Team, shared 12 images of Taylor in orange costumes during her era tour. Many connected the dots that the number of images in the post was related to a new album release, but fans also couldn't help but notice that another singer made an appearance in the post. Sabrina, who performed on the Eras tour as an opening act appeared in the twelfth and final image of the post. Could this mean that she is set to appear in the twelfth song on the album? Or was her inclusion a red herring? Supporting the rumour that she might appear, Sabrina shared a carousel image on social media of herself hanging underwear. The July 7th post from Sabrina showed a number of pastel-coloured underwear, and a bright orange pair of knickers – could this be related to the main colour in Swift's new aesthetic? She also captioned the post: 'Go put on some clothes!' The quote was famously featured in one of the sketches between the two artists during the Eras Tour. Gigi Hadid then commented on the post: 'But daddy I have nothing to wear ! !' Fans immediately speculated that this was linked to Swift's song But Daddy I Love Him, assuming Gigi had insider knowledge. 'WHAT DO U KNOW GIGI?,' said Hometoswift. 'IS THAT A LYRIC GIGI ???????' said Candyce-ee on the post. An official release date has yet to be confirmed, but Taylor's website confirmed orders will be sent out before October 13. Of course, fans have already begun speculating about the actual release date. 'The life of a showgirl is coming 10th or 17th October,' said bejeweledress. More Trending One fan posted a thread on X about why they believe the album would be shared on September 12th, linking to the time the website crashed, the time the Taylor Nation post was shared. 'Taylor's website went down at exactly 9:12pm, commencing a countdown to the announcement!!' they said. 'Taylor Nation also first teased the era by a post 'Thinking about how she said see you next era' posted at exactly 9:12pm that same day.' 'So with all of this being said I think we can confidently say something is happening on the 12th whether it's a single, or the album.' We will have to wait and see! Got a story?
