Alternative awards 2024/25: Rice, Lampard, Postecoglou and more

Yahoo28-05-2025

With the 2024/25 season almost done and dusted, this feels like a good time to hand out awards to some deserving recipients.
We won't bore you with categories that have been done to death elsewhere, but will focus on handing out alternative awards that may have otherwise been overlooked.
Without further ado, let's get stuck in!
Rated as the best thing since sliced bread when he was at Brighton & Hove Albion, Graham Potter subsequently flopped badly at Chelsea.
He returned to management at West Ham United earlier this year, with the club in 14th place in the Premier League, and his sights set on improving their fortunes.
The Hammers subsequently won just five league games and finished the campaign in 14th place in the standings. Amazing stuff.
There was talk of Frank Lampard redeeming himself as a manager after he guided Coventry City into the Championship play-offs.
Having previously failed to win promotion to the Premier League with Derby County, Lampard somehow landed jobs at Chelsea (twice) and Everton.
He now has another failure on his CV after Coventry were defeated by Sunderland in the play-off semi-final. Better luck next time.
The hyperbole was in full flow after Declan Rice produced two excellent performances in Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final victory over Real Madrid.
However, anyone hoping that he had finally proved he was a 'big game player' had their illusions shattered by Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
PSG's midfield left Rice chasing shadows and reminded everyone why his £105 million fee still looks ridiculous. Arsenal need more from him.
There can only be one winner of this award – Ange Postecoglou, the man who always wins silverware in his second season with a club.
Postecoglou argued he was only stating facts when he made the proclamation earlier in the season, and his comments were subsequently used as a stick to beat him with.
Tottenham Hotspur were far from pleasing on the eye in the Europa League final against Manchester United, but they got the job done. That's all that matters.
This one is aimed firmly at Rangers, who are reportedly considering appointing Steven Gerrard for a second spell as manager.
Gerrard guided Rangers to just one trophy during his previous stint at Ibrox before bombing out in subsequent roles at Aston Villa and in the Saudi Pro League.
Rangers' new owners cannot afford to get their managerial appointment wrong. All together now – don't do that!

Top Salvadoran ex-military officers sentenced for wartime killing of Dutch journalists

A jury in El Salvador sentenced three retired high-ranking military officers to 15 years in prison for the murder of four Dutch journalists in 1982, one of the highest profile cases of the Central American nation's civil war. The three were charged on Tuesday for the killings of journalists Koos Joster, Jan Kuiper Joop, Johannes Jan Wilemsen and Hans ter Laag, who were reporting for IKON Television during a 1982 military ambush on a group of former Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) guerrillas - some of whom were armed. A UN truth commission 11 years later found the ambush was 'deliberately planned to surprise and kill the journalists.' The trial was closed and details about the defendants' pleas and arguments were not made public. El Salvador's civil war stretched from 1980 to 1992, pitting leftist guerrillas against the US-backed Salvadoran army and leaving 75,000 people dead and 8,000 more missing. Former Defense Minister General Jose Guillermo Garcia was sentenced by a jury in the northern town of Chalatenango, alongside two colonels: former Treasury Police chief Francisco Moran and former infantry brigade commander Mario Reyes. All three - respectively aged 91, 93 and 85 - were sentenced in absentia. Garcia and Moran are in hospital under custody and Reyes currently lives in the United States though El Salvador is in the process of seeking his return. 'Truth and justice have prevailed, we have won,' Oscar Perez, a representative of the Comunicandonos Foundation that represents some of the relatives, told reporters. 'The victims are the focus now; not the perpetrators.' Prosecutors had requested the 15-year sentence, taking into account the military officers' age and health conditions. The jury also issued a civil condemnation to the Salvadoran state over the delay in delivering justice, a symbolic measure that obliges the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, President Nayib Bukele, to publicly ask for forgiveness from the victims' families.

Brentford set transfer priorities amid interest in Mbeumo and Wissa

Brentford Transfers: Summer Shake-Up on the Horizon Mbeumo and Wissa under the spotlight Brentford's summer transfer window looks poised to test the club's resolve and recruitment strategy. With top-six sides circling, the futures of star forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa remain delicately poised. Together they delivered 39 Premier League goals last season, providing the bite that kept Brentford competitive across the campaign. Advertisement Manchester United are preparing to open talks over Mbeumo. A reported £60 million could tempt Brentford's hierarchy to negotiate. Wissa, too, is attracting serious attention. Tottenham made overtures in January and Nottingham Forest saw a £22 million bid rejected. While no fresh offers have yet landed, interest is expected to escalate as the window progresses. Their potential departures leave a considerable void. Thomas Frank and his recruitment team know that replacing either player—let alone both—would be far from straightforward. Forward planning already underway Brentford's response has been proactive. The club has already confirmed a deal for Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher, bringing the Republic of Ireland international in for £18 million including add-ons. Mark Flekken's move to Bayer Leverkusen for £11 million created the opening, and Brentford wasted no time filling it. Photo: IMAGO They also moved for 18-year-old talent Romelle Donovan from Birmingham City, a £3 million deal which could rise with performance-related bonuses. Donovan impressed while on loan and joins with a long-term view to development, but his arrival won't impact the more immediate need for frontline reinforcements. Advertisement The priority now? A goalscoring winger, preferably right-sided. Despite Kevin Schade's growth over the past 18 months, the Bees have leaned too heavily on Mbeumo and Wissa. That over-reliance has been acknowledged internally. Nigeria international Christantus Uche, currently at Getafe, has been linked. While a deal isn't close, he fits the club's profile: versatile, quick and with resale potential. Midfield and centre-back options being reviewed Brentford also aim to strengthen in midfield, specifically targeting a box-to-box No8 and a more defensively-minded option. That comes even after securing promising Ukrainian Yehor Yarmoliuk to a long-term deal. Advertisement At the back, the Bees are unlikely to invest heavily at full-back. Michael Kayode's loan from Fiorentina has been made permanent for £14.8 million, shoring up the wide defensive positions. The focus now is on spotting undervalued centre-backs—a Brentford speciality in past windows. Uncertainty at managerial level Perhaps most intriguingly, manager Thomas Frank could yet become part of the summer movement. Spurs are reportedly monitoring the Danish coach as they weigh their next step. While no formal approach has been made, it adds another layer of unpredictability to Brentford's off-season. Sales are expected beyond Mbeumo and Wissa. Mads Roerslev and Frank Onyeka are available at the right price, with offers anticipated once bigger moves begin to shape the market. Brentford's transfer window is rarely dull. This one, though, could be season-defining.

Reigning US Amateur Champion Spurns PGA Tour for LIV Golf

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. On Wednesday, LIV Golf made their latest move on the players' side, and once again, it's a young star with an extraordinary future. We're talking about none other than the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, Spaniard José Luis "Josele" Ballester. On Tuesday, the X Flushing It account, which tracks global golf news, reported Ballester's move to the Saudi-backed league as "confirmed." Unsurprisingly, the Arizona State University star has been linked to the Fireballs GC team, captained by fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia. "Reigning US Amateur Champion and sixth-ranked amateur in the world, Josele Ballester, is confirmed to be joining Fireballs GC in the LIV Golf League," Flushing It posted. Another report from the Spanish outlet El Periodigolf said this information would be officially confirmed in the coming hours. The report also stated that Ballester could make his debut with the Fireballs as soon as this weekend at LIV Golf Virginia. Both reports proved to be true, as the Fireballs GC confirmed the news on Wednesday through their social media accounts. Josele Ballester is a Fireball ⛳️ — Fireballs GC (@fireballsgc_) June 4, 2025 The Fireballs currently have a full roster with García, Luis Masaveu, David Puig, and Abraham Ancer. However, it is now reported that Masaveu's contract only covers half a season, so Ballester would replace him. Nevertheless, according to the available information, Masaveu will also play in Virginia, replacing Puig, who has had back problems for several weeks. LIV Golf has found fertile ground in Spanish golf. Prominent Spanish players like Jon Rahm and Sergio García have joined the league alongside young talents like Puig, Masaveu, and now Ballester. Jose Luis Ballester of Spain poses with the trophy after the 36-Hole Championship Match of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club on August 18, 2024 in Chaska, Minnesota. Jose Luis Ballester of Spain poses with the trophy after the 36-Hole Championship Match of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club on August 18, 2024 in Chaska, Ballester recently finished his time playing collegiate golf in the United States with impressive results. He added nine top-five finishes in various NCAA tournaments to his 2024 US Amateur Championship title, as well as significant amateur victories in Spain and Europe. He also earned an invitation to the 2025 Masters Tournament, where the reigning U.S. Amateur champion stole headlines, but not necessarily for the reason he might have wanted. Ballester needed to relieve himself, so he did in Rae's Creek and was spotted. The story went viral, as did his girlfriend's reaction to it. His standing in the PGA Tour University rankings earned him a Korn Ferry Tour card for the remainder of the season. However, Ballester officially rejected this option, which the golf world views as an indication that he is interested in LIV Golf.
