Pakistan Kills Taliban Militants One Year After Attack On Chinese Textile Workers
Three militants from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who allegedly masterminded a targeted attack on Chinese engineers in November last year, were killed during a counterterrorism operation in Karachi's Manghopir area, according to local reports.
Two Chinese employees of a textile factory in Karachi were severely injured when a Pakistani security guard fired on them on November 5, 2024. While authorities denied it was militancy-related, it raised concerns and brought new scrutiny to security measures.
'A terrorist who masterminded an attack on Chinese engineers in November last year has been killed during an operation in Karachi's Manghopir area," Azad Khan, the Additional Inspector-General of Police of Pakistan's Counter-Terrorism Department, told Dawn.
Khan said the terrorist was identified as Zafran, while two of his accomplices were also killed in the operation jointly carried out by the CTD and intelligence agencies. Senior CTD official Raja Umer Khattab confirmed that the trio belonged to the banned TTP.
Pakistan has experienced a sharp rise in terrorist incidents, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the TTP's decision to end its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. Several of these attacks have also targeted Chinese nationals within the country.
A number of attacks in recent years have brought the sensitive position of Chinese citizens in Pakistan into focus. China has always demanded 'strict action" by Pakistani authorities following every attack and applied diplomatic pressure – right up to the level of government – to express its annoyance and call for greater protection of its citizens.
According to a report by the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) published in 2024, 20 Chinese citizens have been killed and 34 injured in terrorist attacks in the country since 2021.
A month before the November incident, a suicide blast near Karachi airport killed two Chinese citizens and wounded at least 10 others. The suicide bomber targeted a Chinese engineers' convoy. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which opposes large development projects in Balochistan, claimed responsibility.

Man out on bail for raping woman opens fire at her in Delhi
Agency: Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) A woman was shot at in Delhi's Vasant Vihar allegedly by a man who was out on interim bail in a rape case she filed against him last year, an official said on Saturday. The woman, a head manager at a salon, was hit on the chest and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre in a PCR van. The woman remains under treatment and is reported to be in stable condition, officials added. Abuzair Safi (30), and his accomplice Aman Sukhla have been arrested for attempting to kill the woman on Wednesday. The arrests were made on Thursday and Friday. According to police, two men on a black motorcycle fired at the woman on Wednesday. Safi, who got bail for a rape case the woman filed last year, was the one who allegedly fired at her, they said. Police reached the spot and found an abandoned auto-rickshaw. The driver, Ranjeet Yadav, told police that his female passenger had sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre by a PCR van. A case was registered at Vasant Vihar Police Station under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Arms Act, based on the woman's statement, police said. 'During interrogation, it emerged that Safi was enraged at the victim for getting a criminal case registered against him. He had tried to contact her multiple times, but she refused to respond, which further aggravated his anger," a senior police officer said. The next day, on August 1, Safi was apprehended and the firearm allegedly used in the shooting was seized from his possession. 'Further investigation is underway to ascertain if more people were involved and to verify the background of the accused," the officer said. Digital arrest scammers target Shimla residents
Agency: PTI Shimla, Aug 2 (PTI) A man losing Rs 38 lakh to 'escape" an income tax raid, a father giving Rs 93 lakh to 'save" son in a rape case — these are among the cases of digital arrest scam reported in the cyber crime police station in Shimla. Digital arrest scam is a form of fraud that preys on fear and misinformation, where the scammers pretend to be judges, police or CBI officers and extort money from the victims by threatening to implicate them in cases of drug trafficking, money laundering, rape, etc. A total of 12 cases of so-called 'digital arrest" were reported in the state in 2024 and 2025, and a total of Rs 5.91 crore were taken from the victims, out of which Rs 33 lakh have been recovered, Superintendent of Police (SP), State CID, Cyber Crime, Dinesh Kumar told the PTI on Saturday. 'It was a normal call, and the caller, introducing himself as an officer, told me that an amount of Rs six crore has been deposited in my bank account and the income tax team is on its way to my house. I was duped of Rs 38 lakhs after three days of digital arrest to resolve the issue", said a victim, whose case was registered on July 7. In another case, a man shelled out Rs 93 lakh to save his son from being framed in a rape case. He received a call in which the officers told him that his son was involved in a rape case and his mobile was switched off. The culprits extracted money by taking advantage of the victim's fear, police added. The recovery of the money is less as the victims turn to the police very late, Kumar said. The cyber frauds create a fake background of offices and impersonate as court, police and CBI officers by wearing uniforms during their video calls to trick victims into transferring money, he added. Cautioning the general public, Sharma cited a few examples of digital arrest fraud and said that scammers also send fake email messages. Another is a fake parcel case scam in which the fraudsters call and say that a suspicious or illegal package has been found with the victim's name. They sometimes claim that a bank account opened in the victim's name is involved in money laundering or illegal transactions. The cybercriminals pretend to be police officers, CBI agents or cyber cell officers and appear in proper uniform in an office background, wearing ID cards and tell the victim that they are being digitally arrested, Kumar said. The state cyber police has advised the general public not to answer calls from unknown or suspicious numbers, not to transfer money out of fear, immediately inform the local police station and report to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 and also inform your family members about the scam.
