Preseason polls are speculative, of course, and trying to figure out which teams aren't ranked but perhaps should be is even more of a crapshoot. To further clarify, none of the five teams listed here were truly snubbed, as they were all mentioned on multiple ballots. But here are a few notable programs that will start the season outside the poll but might at some point be ranked.

Oklahoma
Left out of the preseason poll for the first time since 1999, the Sooners nearly gave the SEC a record 10th team in the Top 25, missing the rankings by just 25 poll points. Unlike some teams on this list, however, Oklahoma will have ample opportunities to prove its worthiness of receiving poll votes, starting in Week 2 when the Sooners take on No. 14 Michigan. Most of the issues in Norman for the last couple of seasons have been on the offensive side of the ball, so Oklahoma's long-term staying power this season will largely hinge on the performance of transfer quarterback John Mateer.
Utah
Our coaches poll panelists had widely varied opinions on the Utes, ranging from top 10 to off the ballot altogether. Utah can usually be counted on to field a competent defense, even if coach Kyle Whittingham is nearing the end of a highly successful career. The issue over the last couple of years has been quarterback instability as Cam Rising never was able to get back on the field. The hope is that situation has now been addressed with the arrival of New Mexico transfer Devon Dampier. With several quality teams but no true juggernauts, the Big 12 offers opportunities for improvement.
Iowa
Stop us if you've heard this one before – The Hawkeyes seemingly win 8-to-10 games every year and could possibly do even more with just a slight uptick in offensive production. The hopes in Iowa City this year rest with Mark Gronowski, who arrives after putting up huge numbers at Championship Subdivision power South Dakota State. If the defense and kicking game continue to be strengths, watch out.
Georgia Tech
In case you've forgotten – and it seems some of the voters have – this team was just a play away from derailing Georgia in the regular-season finale and causing massive disruptions in the playoff picture. Unlike the teams noted above, the Yellow Jackets are set at QB. Haynes King, whose collegiate career began at Texas A&M, can be one of the top signal callers in the ACC when healthy, and his backfield mate Jamal Haynes is also back. The issue now is developing more depth around them and coming up with just a few more defensive stops.
Memphis
We could have designated this entry to the entire American Conference, none of whose members got enough support from the voters to make the preseason poll. The Tigers were featured in this space a year ago and did in fact win 11 games but came up short of the conference title. Ryan Silverfield and his staff certainly know how to develop talent, but the offense is in need of a complete rebuild with mainstay QB Seth Henigan and a slew of other starters lost to graduation. The schedule is manageable, however, so Memphis could string together enough wins to pick up a ranking at some point during the season.

When examining Auburn's coaches poll trends over the last ten seasons, it has been discovered that Auburn has begun each of the last four seasons in the "receiving votes" category, with each season ending with seven losses and zero votes in the final poll. Auburn's season will begin the same way as it has since 2021 in the coaches' poll. Will this season be the year that their luck changes? Here's a look at where Auburn has started each season in the coaches' poll since 2015. 2025: Receiving votes The Auburn Tigers will begin the 2025 season in the "receiving votes" category of the US LBM Coaches Poll by earning 50 votes. This season, the Tigers will face three teams ranked in the top-25: Alabama, Georgia, and Texas A&M, and will face eight teams that are receiving recognition from the preseason poll. 2024: Receiving votes The Tigers kicked off last season by receiving 25 votes in the coaches' poll, which was more than teams such as Iowa State, Florida, and South Carolina. As expected, Auburn failed to receive votes in the final coaches' poll of the season after finishing with a 5-7 record. 2023: Receiving votes Like in 2024, several coaches voted for Auburn to make the 2023 preseason coaches poll before the Tigers ultimately dwindled out of consideration. The Tigers finished with a 6-7 record under first-year head coach Hugh Freeze, losing four of those games to teams that finished in the top 25. 2022: Receiving votes Year two of the Bryan Harsin era started with promise as the Tigers earned 98 votes to begin the season. However, Harsin did not finish the season, and Auburn concluded the 2022 campaign with a 5-7 record, missing a bowl game and losing out on a spot in the final coaches' poll of the year. 2021: Receiving votes By now, you have noticed the trend that correlates between Auburn's seven-loss seasons and their starting position within the coaches' poll. Between 2021 and 2024, Auburn began the season by earning several votes in the preseason poll before ultimately ending the year with seven losses. Auburn's first season under Bryan Harsin began by earning 84 votes, and it would see a high ranking of No. 14 in October before losing five straight games to end the year. 2020: No. 11 The strange, COVID-altered season began with a ranking just outside of the top 10, and ended with 17 votes in the "receiving votes" category after finishing with a 6-4 record against mostly SEC teams. Gus Malzahn was fired at the end of this season after posting a 66-35 record in eight years. 2019: No. 16 Auburn was one of six SEC teams to begin the 2019 season in the coaches poll by checking in at No. 16. Auburn won nine games that season, and ended up finishing two spots higher in the poll than its preseason mark at No. 14. 2018: No. 10 Auburn's impressive 2017 season brought high expectations in 2018 with a top-10 preseason ranking. This season, however, ended in disappointment with five losses and 27 final poll votes, leaving the Tigers outside the top 25. 2017: No. 13 The Tigers were consistently in the polls during the 2017 season, finding its way into every one during the year. The Tigers ended the year ranked No. 12 after beating two No. 1 teams and making an appearance in the SEC Championship Game. Auburn ranked as high as No. 4 in the coaches poll before losing to Georgia in the SEC title game. 2016: Receiving votes The 2016 season is one of the few that has a happy ending. The Tigers earned 17 votes in the initial coaches poll, but an eight-win campaign and a Sugar Bowl appearance led Auburn to a No. 22 final ranking. 2015: No. 7 The 2015 season was the most disappointing of this time frame. Auburn held a top-10 ranking to begin the year, but an overtime win over then-FCS foe Jacksonville State plummeted the Tigers' stock to a point where it never recovered. The Tigers dropped from No. 7 to No. 20 following the win over Jax State in week two, and were completely out of the poll by week four after losing to LSU and Mississippi State. Auburn's 7-6 record was not good enough to receive a vote in the final poll of the 2015 season. NCAA to announce findings, punishments in Michigan football sign-stealing scandal Friday
The long, winding and often weird saga surrounding Michigan football and its sign-stealing scandal appears to finally be drawing to a close. The NCAA has notified relevant parties in the Wolverines' infractions case that an announcement on the investigation's findings and punishments will be released on Aug. 15, a source confirmed to the Detroit Free Press, a part of the USA TODAY Network, on Aug. 14. The scandal has followed the Wolverines since news of it first broke in October 2023 and trailed them during an eventful stretch in the program's long, storied history. Since that October day, Michigan won its first national championship since 1997, watched head coach Jim Harbaugh leave for the NFL and saw a once-anonymous staffer − Connor Stalions − become a nationally recognized figure virtually overnight. REQUIRED READING: The biggest college football quarterback competitions still undecided feature elite teams The NCAA's Committee on Infractions will make a recommendation for a punishment, which Michigan will have the chance to appeal. In January, the Wolverines accused the NCAA of 'grossly overreaching' and 'wildly overcharging' the program in response to an August 2024 notice of allegations that cited 11 NCAA infractions, including six Level I violations, the most serious offenses in the NCAA rulebook. The university has tried to be proactive in dealing with the potential fallout of the case, suspending head coach Sherrone Moore for two games during the upcoming 2025 season (Weeks 3 and 4 vs Central Michigan and Nebraska, respectively). Moore was Michigan's offensive coordinator during the sign-stealing saga and was alleged to have deleted 52 text messages from Stalions. The Wolverines, the No. 14 team in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, open their season on August 30 against New Mexico.

The 2025 college football season begins in less than two weeks, and between now and then, fans are trying to predict how their favorite teams and players will perform this year. The Oklahoma Sooners are gaining some traction, but many are taking a wait-and-see approach with the Sooners. OU was left just outside the US LBM Coaches Poll last week. Shaking up the offense this offseason gives Oklahoma a chance to improve in a big way in 2025. One of the biggest changes was at starting quarterback, where John Mateer steps into the spotlight in Norman after transferring in from Washington State. He's received plenty of offseason hype, with many believing he could be one of the best players in the sport this year. That's certainly the case for Josh Pate, the host of "Josh Pate's College Football Show". He named his top four college football quarterbacks heading into this season, and Mateer ranked second, behind only Florida's DJ Lagway. Mateer was ranked ahead of Clemson's Cade Klubnik and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. I'm going to tell you who's close behind (Lagway), though, that many, many more people are sleeping on, is John Mateer at Oklahoma. I've bought all the John Mateer stock. I've got a John Mateer Heisman Trophy ticket in my back pocket. I couldn't be higher on him ... There are people out there who question his mechanics who have not the slightest clue about quarterback mechanics or throwing mechanics. I'll tell you what, you want to see a sidearm throw? You want to see different arm angles? Watch him on the run. Watch him throw the ball on the run. Watch the accuracy. Mid-range, downfield, watch the accuracy. - Pate, Josh Pate's College Football Show Pate highlighted Mateer's ability to improvise when things breakdown, calling his off-script playmaking "elite." One of the biggest talking points surrounding Mateer is how he'll be able to adapt to the SEC. But Pate believes the conference will struggle to contain John Mateer. That's high praise for Mateer, who followed his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle from WSU to Oklahoma this offseason. One of the biggest questions surrounding that duo has been the SEC adjustment, but Pate seems to think that the league will have to adjust to them. The Sooners kick off the season on Saturday, August 30th at home against Illinois State.
