Xiaomi's second-quarter revenue up 30.5pct, boosted by smartphones
BEIJING: A rise in sales of smartphones, especially in Southeast Asia, helped to boost Xiaomi's second-quarter revenue by 30.5 per cent, the smartphone and electric vehicle (EV) company said on Tuesday. Revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was 116 billion yuan (US$16.16 billion), beating the 114.7 billion yuan average of 15 analyst estimates compiled by LSEG. Adjusted net profit rose 75.4 per cent year-on-year to 10.8 billion yuan, exceeding the average estimate of 10.1 billion yuan, according to LSEG data. The world's third-largest smartphone maker became the bestselling smartphone brand in Southeast Asia in the second quarter and took second place by shipments in Europe, it said. Its EV business, meanwhile, generated 20.6 billion yuan in revenue during the second quarter, up from 18.1 billion during the first quarter. It delivered 81,302 EVs in the June quarter, compared with deliveries of 75,869 SU7 cars in January-March. Its second EV model YU7 was launched in late June, with the deliveries only beginning last month, meaning it has yet to be reflected in results. Its EV, AI and other new initiatives reported a total net loss of 0.3 billion yuan in the June quarter, narrowing from a loss of 0.5 billion in the first quarter. Hong Kong-listed shares in Xiaomi, which also makes home appliances, closed down 1.2 per cent at 52.4 Hong Kong dollars. The stock has risen 52 per cent so far this year.

Dollar bides time as markets brace for Ukraine summit
SINGAPORE: The US dollar held steady against its major peers on Tuesday as global markets awaited the outcome of a White House summit with European nations that could determine the next phase of the war in Ukraine. The dollar index rose 0.31 per cent to 98.122 with geopolitical events taking centre stage, after US President Donald Trump told President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end the war with Russia. "At the moment, markets are cautious," said Tina Teng, an independent market analyst in Auckland, as traders weighed the possible implications for the global energy markets. "The US dollar is going stronger against other currencies and the risk-on sentiment is still leading markets at the moment," she added, citing stock indexes at record highs. The euro held steady at US$1.1667, up 0.06 per cent so far in Asia, shuffling along the midpoint of the trading range it has sat in for the past two weeks. Markets are seeking direction this week from the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole on the likely path of interest rates. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework. Many investors are away for summer holidays in the northern hemisphere, while markets will be left with few catalysts amid a thin diary of data releases on Tuesday. Cryptocurrencies bucked the trend, with bitcoin falling 0.3 per cent to notch a third straight day of declines after hitting a record high on Thursday. Ether sank 0.6 per cent, extending losses for a second day after failing to breach a record high last week. Against the yen, the dollar was at 147.835 yen, unchanged from late US levels and nearing the top of the trading channel it has sat in all month. Japanese stock markets advanced in early trading on Tuesday, with both the Nikkei 225 and the Topix at record levels. The Australian dollar fetched US$0.6495, up 0.1 per cent in early trade, after Westpac's consumer sentiment data for August rose to a 3-1/2-year high. The kiwi tacked on 0.1 per cent to US$0.59245. Sterling traded at US$1.351, up 0.1 per cent so far on the day, after rebounding from the low end of its range recorded over the past week.

CSL to cut workforce, spin off flu vaccine arm; shares tumble
KUALA LUMPUR: Australian biotech firm CSL said on Tuesday it would spin off its influenza vaccine division and would cut up to 15 per cent of its workforce as part of a strategic overhaul, sending its shares tumbling 11 per cent. It is also targeting annualised savings of up to US$550 million over the next three years and plans to book a one-off pre-tax charge of up to US$770 million in the current financial year. "The transformational initiatives we are announcing today will further reshape and simplify the business, provide a platform to renew CSL's focus on our core strengths," CEO Paul McKenzie said in a statement. The strategic overhaul was announced in tandem with earnings, with CSL reporting a 14 per cent rise in underlying profit for the year ended June to US$3.3 billion on a constant currency basis, driven by a strong performance from its blood plasma business, CSL Behring. It aims to spin off the flu vaccine unit, CSL Seqirus, into a separately listed entity in Australia by next June, as lower U.S. immunisation rates and potential US tariffs on pharmaceuticals cloud the division's outlook. Craig Sidney, a senior investment advisor at Shaw and Partners, said the spin-off "could actually unlock some value and that may well be positive." But CSL, which employs some 29,900 people, saw its stock tumble to its lowest in five weeks, making it the worst performer in the ASX200 benchmark index, which traded 0.6 per cent lower. "Cutting back staff is normally a positive thing, but I suspect that it will have an impact on earnings growth and that's what the market seems to be focused on at the moment," Sidney said. CSL also said it will resume its share buyback program, starting with A$750 million (US$486 million) this financial year. CSL Behring's fiscal 2025 revenue grew 6 per cent to US$11.16 billion, with demand for its core plasma therapies expected to remain robust in 2026. That underpinned CSL's forecast of underlying annual earnings of between US$3.45 billion and US$3.55 billion on a constant currency basis, though the midpoint of the range fell short of the Visible Alpha consensus of US$3.56 billion. CSL, founded more than a century ago as a government laboratory, declared a final dividend of US$1.62 per share, up from US$1.45 per share declared a year ago.
