Lionel Messi scores as Inter Miami rout Red Bulls 4-1
Luis Suarez and Marcelo Weigandt each had one goal and one assist to help Inter Miami record a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Lionel Messi added his first MLS goal since April 6 and Fafa Picault also found the back of the net for Inter Miami (6-1-3, 21 points). Mohammed Sofo had the lone tally for the Red Bulls (4-4-3, 15 points), who remain winless (0-3-2) on the road this season. New York had allowed just nine goals in 10 matches before Miami put on an offensive show.
The Herons have scored seven goals in their past two MLS matches but lost the first one, 4-3 to FC Dallas last Sunday. Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and New York counterpart Carlos Miguel Coronel each had two stops.
The Herons held a 12-10 edge in shots and placed six on target to three for the Red Bulls. Miami scored the first three goals of the match and was never again threatened.
Picault scored in the ninth minute to get things started. Weigandt sent a cross to the left and it glanced off the head of Suarez.
Picault was there and placed a right-footed shot into the top left corner.
Miami scored twice in six minutes later in the half. In the 33th minute, Weigandt had his header stopped by Coronel but got the rebound and set a right-footed shot into the net.
Suarez also went the rebound route to make it 3-0.
His right-footed shot was blocked by New York's Kyle Duncan before he hurried forward and sent a left-footer into the net.
Messi scores twice in Miami's frantic comeback over LAFC
The Red Bulls got on the board in the 43th minute as Sofo sent a high looping header from the left side that landed in the right-hand corner of the net.
The foot of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting appeared to touch the ball inside the post but the goal was awarded to Sofo.
Any thought of a New York comeback was put to the rest in the 67th minute when Messi ripped a short-range left-footed shot into the net.

PHOTO: AFP Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday as FIFA's new 32-team tournament got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida. Messi was denied a storybook stoppage-time winner when he saw his curling shot from 20 yards out tipped on to the bar by Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game. Al Ahly, who were cheered on by over 10,000 of their supporters, were left to rue a first-half penalty from Egypt international Trezeguet which was saved by Miami's Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari. But the Egyptians also had El Shenawy to thank for another fine save in the dying seconds to keep out a header from Maxi Falcon as Miami pushed for three points in the Group A clash. For organisers FIFA, who have faced heavy skepticism over the necessity for the tournament, the absence of a goal was the only disappointment on a night that delivered everything else that their president Gianni Infantino had hoped for from the opening night. Fears of a low crowd for the opener eased as the seats in the 64,000 venue began to fill up with the stadium almost full at kick-off time. Thousands of fans of Al Ahly, record 12 times African Champions League winner and 45-time league champions of Egypt, arrived at Hard Rock Stadium well ahead of kick-off and made their presence felt with singing and chanting. The stadium, home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins, witnessed chaotic scenes last year at the final of the Copa America between Argentina and Colombia where fans broke into the ground after long delays to enter. But there was an efficient filter system set up for ticket and security checks well away from the stadium perimeter and there were no signs of any problems. Nor was there any indication of the controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants from US President Donald Trump's administration having any impact on the game in the heavily Hispanic South Florida community. While there were no goals to celebrate, the game was far from boring with Al Ahly enjoying the better of the first half before Miami improved significantly after the break. Al Ahly opened up Miami's defence with ease in the opening minutes of the game and Emam Ashour was denied by Ustari after being put through by Trezeguet. Palestine international striker Wessam Abou Ali had an effort ruled out for offside in the 31st minute and then the Denmark-born forward had a fierce strike tipped over by Ustari. The penalty came when Telasco Segovia bundled over Zizo but Trezeguet's spot kick was weak and parried out with the former Aston Villa forward unable to react fast enough to the rebound. Miami were stronger after the break with Messi going close in the 64th minute with a free-kick which grazed the post before hitting the side-netting, tricking part of the crowd into thinking he had scored. He nearly did in stoppage time, after a well-worked short-corner but the outstretched finger tip of El Shenawy was to deny him. Miami face Porto in Atlanta on Thursday before returning home to face Brazil's Palmeiras on Monday and while those should be tougher tests, their Argentina coach Javier Mascherano was upbeat. "The truth is we leave with the feeling that we could have won it in the second half. Going forward we have to do what we did in the second half, not have any fear, shed whatever baggage we had because when we play like that, we can play even with any team," he said. Al Ahly's Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who only took charge of the team for this tournament, said his team should have finished the game off in the first half. "It's a game of mistakes. We had a decent amount of chances in the first half to put the game in a different space," he said before praising the team's fans.

PHOTO: AFP Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for Saturday's Club World Cup opener against Al-Ahly, with coach Javier Mascherano forced to re-shuffle his backline due to a string of injuries. Fullback Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. "They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game," Mascherano told a press conference on Friday. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre back David Martinez. "David had some kind of pain yesterday and we did not want to take any risks," said Mascherano. "The reality is that throughout the season, the team have dealt with injuries, but the players who stepped in rose to the challenge. That gives us peace of mind," he said. Miami have conceded 16 goals in their last six competitive games. Much of Miami's chances rest on Messi's shoulders. "He's in good shape this season. There were moments when we had to give him some time to rest, but he's played the last 15 games, except for the match against Dallas when we rested the entire squad," said Mascherano. "We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games," he added referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. "It's our responsibility to create the right environment for him to shine." Miami will also take on Porto and Palmeiras in the 32-club competition. Lionel Messi double as Miami hit five past Columbus
FORT LAUDERDALE: Lionel Messi scored twice and created two more as Inter Miami warmed up for the Club World Cup in style with a 5-1 win over the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer on Saturday. Miami will open the new FIFA tournament on June 14 against Egyptian and African champions Al Ahly and after a major dip in form they have found their touch again in their last two MLS games. A 4-2 win over Montreal in midweek, with Messi and Luis Suarez scoring two goals each, eased the tensions around Javier Mascherano's team and their renewed confidence was evident from the outset. Miami were helped by some uncharacteristically loose defending from Columbus, who have been one of the most consistent performers in MLS over the past three seasons but were easily opened up by Messi and Company. Argentine Tadeo Allende opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Messi, who had dropped deep into midfield, sent him goalwards with a long ball over the top and the forward confidently slotted home. Two minutes later, Columbus's Guatemalan goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen, standing in for the injured Patrick Schulte, then gifted Miami's second when he hesitated with the ball at his feet and passed straight to Messi, of all people, with the World Cup winner then attempting to chip him. Hagen scrambled, getting an outstretched palm on the ball but the shot looped into the net to make it 2-0 and leave the visitors in deep trouble. Messi made it three in the 24th minute when Sergio Busquets spotted the Crew defence were asleep and floated a pass over the top which Messi raced on to before lobbing the advancing Hagen. Messi and Miami fight back for 3-3 draw at Philadelphia Columbus gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a thundering header from Cesar Ruvalcaba in the 58th minute but six minutes later Miami had restored their three goal advantage. Messi broke through the middle and then fed Telasco Segovia who slipped the ball outside to Suarez who buried the ball into the bottom corner. The eight-times Ballon d'Or winner was the creator again when he fed substitute Fafa Picault who broke away before a clinical finish to complete the rout. Messi now heads off for international duty with Argentina, who have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup and are away to Chile on Thursday and host Colombia on June 10.
