Ancient Jain caves in Telangana's Anantagiri face neglect, archaeologist calls for their protection

Indian Express3 days ago

cluster of fifteen 9th-century rock-cut Jain caves at Telangana's Anantagiri, a popular hill station in the Vikarabad district, about 100km from the state capital Hyderabad, is in urgent need of protection and conservation, according to senior archaeologist Dr E Sivanagireddy. He inspected the site Saturday and highlighted the precarious state of these 1,100-year-old historical treasures.
The caves, which are square and rectangular in plan, vary in size from 2 to 6 metres in length, 2 to 3 metres in width, and 2.5 metres in depth, with openings that face east.
Dr Reddy confirmed their Jain affiliation, noting they were likely excavated to provide shelter for Jain ascetics during the rainy season and to observe the Sallekhana vrata (fast unto death).
'Out of the 15 caves, only six remain intact, with the others suffering damage while widening a pathway leading to the origin point of the Musi river. Evidence of their Jain heritage includes rock-cut beds on the cave floors, niches in the walls for lamps, and a mutilated Jain statue seated in artha paryankasana,' he said.
Dr Sivanagireddy has appealed to the authorities of the Ananta Padmanabha Swamy temple and the Vikarabad Municipality to take immediate steps for the preservation of these significant historical sites.
His recommendations include removing the whitewash coating from the cave walls, improving accessibility with proper pathways, creating a clear 'free belt' around the caves, and installing signage detailing their historical and religious importance. Such measures, he stressed, are crucial to safeguard these caves for future generations.
Dr Padmanabham, chairman of the temple, has reportedly assured Dr Reddy of his support in this endeavour. Heritage activists D R Syamsundar Rao, B Venkatareddy, B Sai Kiran Reddy, and Ellayya were also part of the exploration team.
Dr Sivanagireddy said such rock-cut caves are found in four more locations across the state, and all belong to the Rashtrakuta period and similarly deserve attention and protection.
'There are similar caves at Yellakonda near Nawabpet on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Such caves are also noticed at Akalayagutta, Padmakshigutta, and Mugilicherla on the outskirts of Warangal,' he added.

HMWS&SB MD directs urgent repairs on Malakpet drains; hotel owner fined for illegally dumping waste into sewerage line

Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy directed urgent repair works to remedy the drainage situation near Akbar Plaza at Nalgonda Chowrasta in Old Malakpet on Tuesday. Traffic congestion, police diversions, and public inconvenience reached alarming levels as sewage kept overflowing onto the roads over the past few days. Mr. Ashok Reddy, who conducted an on-site inspection said the severity is due to the decades-old sewerage line that is in a deteriorating state combined with the proximity of GHMCs stormwater drain and the heavy flow of traffic in the area, which made identification of the exact damage location difficult. He instructed officials for construction of a new line from Nalgonda Chowrasta to Malakpet Road Under Bridge (RUB) to check for future overflows. In addition to desilting the nearby sewerage lines and manholes, he suggested connecting multiple lines to a centralised outlet. Hotel waste into sewerage line On Tuesday, it was also found that the hotel adjacent to Nalgonda Chowrasta has illegally connected its sewerage line directly to the HMWS&SBs line to discard its daily waste, and the bulk food waste was being dumped into the manhole. This was identified to be one of the major reasons for sewage overflow and spilling onto the roads, officials said. Expressing displeasure, Mr. Reddy imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on the hotel owner and mandated him to construct a silt chamber within 10 days, failing which the hotel will be closed for violations and causing public inconvenience. Permanent solution Mr. Reddy called for a comprehensive study of the situation by both officials from HMWS&SB and GHMC, particularly to identify intersecting lines. He also suggested construction of separate sewerage and stormwater lines to prevent future mixing and overflows.

"Extremely productive visit": Indian envoy BN Reddy on India's diplomatic outraech to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 3 (ANI): An Indian all-party parliamentary delegation, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, successfully concluded a productive visit to Malaysia, engaging in a series of high-level meetings with political leaders, influential think tanks, and members of the Indian community. India's High Commissioner to Malaysia, BN Reddy, said the delegation met with several Malaysian stakeholders, including the Speaker of Parliament and the Special Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and International Trade, led by YB Wong Chen. The delegation also held discussions with key political parties such as the People's Justice Party (PKR), headed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Democratic Action Party, and the Malaysian Indian Congress, both part of the ruling coalition. The visit also included interactions with leading Malaysian think tanks such as the Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and the Asia Institute, along with representatives from the local media. Reddy emphasised the importance of the delegation's engagement with the Indian community in Malaysia, which is home to the world's second-largest Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) population and nearly 300,000 Indian passport holders. Summing up the visit, Reddy said, 'It has been an extremely productive visit from the perspective of conveying the key message of new India. It's about India's policy of zero tolerance against terrorism, and that message has resonated well.' He noted that the delegation effectively highlighted the impact of cross-border terrorism on India's security. 'This will have a positive impact on how we go forward in taking this message further,' he added. 'The groundwork laid by our all-party parliamentary delegation will help enhance future engagement with Malaysian stakeholders,' Reddy said. The Indian delegation includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, among others. Their visit is part of a multi-nation tour to brief international partners on India's counter-terrorism efforts and promote regional cooperation. The delegation's tour includes stops in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore, underscoring India's commitment to regional peace, security, and development. (ANI)
