Only one thought on my mind: Goa had to win, says Drazic

FC Goa's Dejan Drazic put up a Man-of-the-Match performance against Al-Seeb at Fatorda on Wednesday
Panaji: Asked to compare his goals in the
Indian Super League
(ISL) to the one he scored against Al Seeb in the AFC Champions League Two qualifier, Dejan Drazic looked a bit puzzled at the post match media interaction on Wednesday night.
'Is this one special?,' he was asked.
FC Goa
's Serbian winger took time to respond. English isn't his first language, but that's not why he paused. 'I scored just one (in the ISL), it's not a big deal,' Drazic replied.
On the evidence of his dazzling display against Al Seeb Club, the Oman league champions and AFC Cup winners, almost everyone took it for granted that goalscoring comes naturally to the winger who joined Goa last season.
In 23 ISL games, Drazic had one goal and three assists, but his effectiveness on the left won him plenty of fans.
That list of admirers would have grown exponentially after he scored the opener against Al Seeb. It was well crafted. Drazic trapped Borja Herrera's instinctive long ball, beat the onrushing goalkeeper with a delicate chip and then lobbed it home, to the delight of the home fans.
'The game was extremely difficult, but the team showed that it deserves to play in such competitions,' Drazic told TOI after being adjudged Man-of-the-Match.

'There was only one thought in my head. We had to win, and there were so many reasons that I won't go into the details. I want to thank our players and the fans for their great support. Goa, and Indian football, deserves such moments.'
Drazic's delight at the end of the ACL Two qualifier was in contrast to the last game at Fatorda. It was the second leg of the ISL semifinal, one where Goa seemed to have done enough to take the match into extra-time after scoring twice, which included a 88th minute strike from Armando Sadiku.
But then, that brain fade happened.
For those who have forgotten, it was Drazic's pass to nowhere inside the box that allowed Namgyal Bhutia to pounce on the opportunity and cross for Sunil Chhetri to score the goal that took Bengaluru to the ISL final. Goa were stunned; Drazic, crestfallen.
'Mistakes are an integral part of sport, but it's important that you realise those mistakes and accept responsibility. It hurts, but what matters is that you learn something from it, keep your head up and move on,' said Drazic.
When Drazic took the field against a strong Al Seeb side, that 'error' wasn't on his mind. 'I don't think (of the past), maybe that's one of my better qualities. I quickly focus on the next moment.'
Drazic put up such an impressive performance against Al Seeb that he was voted the most valuable player (MVP).
'I would say this was a completely correct game,' said Drazic. 'I don't think it was my best, but let's say I spent a lot of energy defensively, and offensively I got a goal. I am satisfied.'
That's putting it too mildly.

Sunil Chhetri missing in list of 35 probables named by new coach Jamil for CAFA Nations Cup

Synopsis Sunil Chhetri is not in the 35-man list for the CAFA Nations Cup. Khalid Jamil, the new coach, made the selection. Uncertainty surrounds Chhetri's absence. Bengaluru FC players face salary issues. Other Bengaluru FC players are included. India will play Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. The AIFF wants clubs to release players. ANI Sunil Chhetri Talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri has been left out of the 35 probables named by newly-appointed Indian football team head coach Khalid Jamil for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It's unlikely that he was dropped on the basis of his form in the four matches he played after coming back from his international retirement. However, it's also not known whether Chhetri himself requested not to consider him for the tournament, to be held later this month, or if he was rested as his Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC is yet to start pre-season training. Bengaluru FC recently suspended salaries for its first-team players and staff, including that of Chhetri, due to uncertainty surrounding the ISL's future. However, Jamil's list of probables includes other Bengaluru FC players like goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, defenders Chinglensana Singh, Rahul Bheke, Roshan Singh Naorem, and midfieler Suresh Singh. All India Football Federation (AIFF) officials are not willing to comment on the matter, saying "the question should be asked to the head coach". The 41-year-old Chhetri took international retirement after playing against Kuwait in June last year but made a return for national duty in the match against Maldives in March this year following a request from the then India head coach Manolo Marquez to help the team in the Asian Cup qualifiers third round. Chhetri has played four matches since then and scored once -- in the team's 3-0 win over Maldives. India drew Bangladesh 0-0 and lost to Hong Kong 0-1 in the Asian Cup qualifiers, leaving the country in a difficult position to qualify for the continental showpiece in 2027. In between India lost 0-2 to Thailand in an international friendly match. Marquez quit after the string of poor performance of the team. The players will begin training in Bengaluru from Saturday with 22 players having reported to the camp so far. The remaining 13 other players are expected to join the camp after completing their Durand Cup engagements with their respective clubs. Out of the remaining 13, seven -- Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalengmawia Ralte, Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad, Vishal Kaith -- are from Mohun Bagan, three -- Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh, Naorem Mahesh Singh -- are from East Bengal and one -- Jithin MS -- from NorthEast United. Placed in Group B of the CAFA Nations Cup, India face co-host Tajikistan on August 29, Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. The third-place match and the final will be played on September 8 in Hisor and Tashkent (Uzbekistan), respectively. The AIFF has urged all the clubs to release national team players for the tournament, so that the national team can prepare for the upcoming Asian Cup Qualifiers match against Singapore (home and away) in October.
