Broadcom launches new Tomahawk Ultra networking chip in AI battle against Nvidia
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Broadcom's chip unit unveiled on Tuesday a new networking processor that aims to speed artificial intelligence data crunching, which requires stringing together hundreds of chips that work together.
The new chip is the latest piece of hardware that Broadcom has brought to bear against rival AI giant Nvidia. Broadcom helps Alphabet's Google produce its AI chips, which are perceived by developers and industry experts as one of the few viable alternatives to Nvidia's powerful graphics processors (GPUs).
Dubbed the Tomahawk Ultra, Broadcom's chip acts as a traffic controller for data whizzing between dozens or hundreds of chips that sit relatively closely together inside a data center, such as inside a single server rack.
The chip aims to compete with Nvidia's NVLink Switch chip which has a similar purpose, but the Tomahawk Ultra can tie together four times the number of chips, Ram Velaga, a Broadcom senior vice president, told Reuters in an interview. And instead of a proprietary protocol to move the data, it uses a boosted-for-speed version of ethernet.
Both companies' chips help data center builders and others tie as many chips as possible together within a few feet of each other, a technique the industry calls "scale-up" computing. By ensuring close-by chips can communicate with each other quickly, software developers can summon the computing horsepower necessary for AI.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will manufacture the Ultra line of processors with its five nano-meter process, Velaga said. The processor is now shipping.
It took Broadcom's teams of engineers roughly three years to develop the design, which was originally built for a segment of the market known as high-performance computing. But as generative AI boomed, Broadcom adapted the chip for use by AI companies because it is suited to scaling up.

TAIPEI, July 17 — Taiwanese chipmaking giant TSMC reported today a forecast-beating 60 per cent rise in net profit for the second quarter on sustained demand for artificial intelligence technology. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the world's largest contract maker of chips and counts Nvidia and Apple among its clients. TSMC said its net profit for the three months to June soared 60.7 per cent from a year ago to NT$398.3 billion (RM57.4 billion). That beat expectations of NT$376.97 billion, according to a Bloomberg News survey of analysts. Second quarter revenue was up 39 per cent on-year, also beating forecasts. Chips are essential for generative AI, which has exploded in recent years and transformed the global economy. Nvidia said this week it will resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China after Washington pledged to remove licensing restrictions that had halted exports. The quarterly results follow Trump's latest barrage of tariffs and renewed threats to impose levies on pharmaceutical products and chips. TSMC chairman and chief executive CC Wei said last month that the company 'may be affected' if tariffs force up prices and demand for chips falls, but he added: 'Our business will still be very good.' Taiwan has been locked in negotiations with Washington over Trump's threat to impose a 32 per cent tariff on the island's exports if they don't strike a deal by August 1. To help its case, Taipei has pledged to increase investment in the United States, buy more US energy and increase its own defence spending. — AFP

New pier completed at North Korea rocket launch site, satellite imagery shows

The pier at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station seen via the imagery "enables transport of larger rocket components than previously possible via rail", ICEYE said in findings provided to Reuters. Larger components would allow the site to host rockets that can travel longer distances. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2022 inspected the Sohae facility and ordered it to be modernised and expanded to ensure that various rockets, including those capable of carrying military spy satellites, could be launched, state media said. The facility has been used to put a satellite in orbit and also to test various missile components including rocket engines and space launch vehicles that South Korean and U.S. officials say require similar technology to that used in intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). An image from July 9 also shows the pier with a newly constructed jetty and vessels indicating potential operational status, according to ICEYE, a sign that could help enhance Sohae's logistical capabilities. ICEYE added that it took about 28 months from initial reports to develop and complete the pier. Work to expand the road and rail infrastructure throughout the facility continues, according to 38 North, a Washington-based North Korea monitoring programme. Satellite images, taken from December to July by the commercial satellite firm Planet Labs, also show what appears to be a pier under construction on the shore. Pyongyang's latest attempt to launch a military spy satellite at the Sohae site failed in May 2024 but Kim has vowed to never give up the space reconnaissance project that he views as crucial for national self defence against enemy threats. North Korea successfully placed its first spy satellite in orbit in November 2023. As part of growing military ties with Moscow, North Korea is likely getting help from Russia on its satellite programme in exchange for sending troops to support Russia in its war against Ukraine, South Korean officials have said. North Korea says its military activities, including nuclear weapons, are its sovereign right and only for self defence. It accused the United States and its allies of threatening it with "hostile policies" such as military drills and sanctions. Oil up as demand expectations, economic data lift sentiment

Brent crude futures rose 24 cents, or 0.35%, to $68.76 a barrel at 0457 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 33 cents, or 0.5%, at $66.71. Both benchmarks fell more than 0.2% in the previous session. U.S. President Donald Trump has said letters notifying smaller countries of their U.S. tariff rates would go out soon, and said on Wednesday that he would probably put a blanket 10% or 15% tariff on smaller countries. New agreements with Indonesia and Vietnam were announced this week. Trump also offered renewed optimism about prospects of a deal with Beijing on illicit drugs and hinted that a trade deal with India was very close, while an agreement could possibly be reached with Europe as well. "Trump softened tones on China and proposed lower tariff rates on smaller countries, which are seen as positive developments in the global trade outlooks," said independent analyst Tina Teng. "China's better-than-expected economic data and the U.S.'s larger-than-expected oil inventory draw have both been bullish factors for oil prices." U.S. crude inventories fell by 3.9 million barrels to 422.2 million barrels last week, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday, a steeper decline than forecast for a 552,000-barrel draw, suggesting stronger refinery activity, tighter supply, and increased demand. However, larger-than-expected builds in gasoline and diesel inventories capped price gains. This raised concerns of weakening demand from summer travel, ANZ analysts said in a note on Thursday. The latest snapshot of the U.S. economy by the central bank, released on Wednesday, showed activity picked up in recent weeks. However, the outlook was "neutral to slightly pessimistic" as businesses reported that higher import tariffs were putting upward pressure on prices. Meanwhile, China data showed growth slowed in the second quarter, but not by as much as previously feared, in part because of front-loading to beat U.S. tariffs, easing fears over the state of the world's largest crude importer's economy. Data also showed that China's June crude oil throughput was up 8.5% from a year ago, implying stronger fuel demand.
