Cunha charged by FA for 'improper conduct' after red card vs Cherries

Yahoo06-03-2025

WOLVES forward Matheus Cunha faces an extended ban after being charged with improper conduct following his dismissal in last week's FA Cup penalty shootout defeat at Bournemouth.
Cunha was shown a straight red card in the closing stages of extra time for grabbing Milos Kerkez around the neck before he appeared to punch, kick and push his head into the face of the Cherries defender.
After referee Sam Barrott had dismissed Cunha, the Brazilian then remonstrated with Wolves boss Vitor Pereira and pushed team-mate Dan Bentley as he was ushered towards the changing room.
Andoni Iraola expressed his frustration at the officiating on Saturday, as Kerkez was booked for 'adopting an aggressive attitude' in the incident that led to Cunha's red card.
This means the Hungarian will be suspended for the FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester City, having picked up two bookings in the competition.
The FA said: 'Matheus Cunha has been charged following the FA Cup tie between Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, March 1.
'It's alleged that the forward acted in an improper manner around the 121st minute of the fixture after his dismissal. Matheus Cunha has until Monday, March 10 to provide a response.'
Cunha is currently serving a three-match ban for his second red card of the season.
He was banned for two matches by the FA in December after he clashed with a member of Ipswich's staff and could face further retrospective punishment following the latest incident at the Vitality Stadium.

Tijjani Reijnders ‘really excited' to link up with Man City for Club World Cup

Tijjani Reijnders 'could not wait' to undergo his medical with Manchester City and expects to be in their squad for the Club World Cup. The 26-year-old Netherlands midfielder has agreed a five-year contract to move to City from AC Milan for 55million euros (approximately £46million) and told Italian media he had spent Sunday conducting a medical with Pep Guardiola's side. Advertisement City will play their first match of the Club World Cup against Morocco's Wydad AC on June 18 and the arrival of Reijnders could also impact the future of Jack Grealish at City. Reijnders told Gazzetta: 'The medical? I couldn't wait to do it. The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates soon.' Reijnders was a bright spark in a disappointing season for Milan, who only finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on qualification for Europe. Manchester City's Jack Grealish could leave this summer (Martin Rickett/PA) Reijnders, who joined the Italian giants from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, scored 15 goals in 2024-25 and will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. Advertisement As first reported by the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, England international Grealish looks set to miss out on City's final 35-man squad for the Club World Cup. The 29-year-old was not summoned from the bench in last month's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace and omitted from the squad for the last game of the season at Fulham altogether.

Fabrizio Romano confirms 'agreement is done' for record-breaking Liverpool deal

The Reds have been incredibly busy in this early part of the summer and now that one transfer has been confirmed, another two are on the brink of being announced once their medicals are scheduled. Money has often been spent frugally at Liverpool, but the times are a changing and the club has no choice but to adhere to the new tide of transfer spending in order to survive. Advertisement Potential is now an incredibly expensive commodity and a track record of success is not necessary for a player to be sold for a significant transfer fee. Getting a bargain in this day and age is tough. Kerkez to Liverpool will break historic records Milos Kerkez's impending move to Merseyside has been rumoured for quite some time. The Hungarian is our priority signing at left-back and it's now inconceivable that anyone else could join. At 21 years old, the Premier League team of the season full-back has outshone everyone else and his game fits perfectly into Arne Slot's plans. You would struggle to find anyone with a better fit to us. Advertisement Not only is his potential enormous, but his current skillset is a major upgrade on the options that Liverpool have available right now and so the financial cost of signing him is irrelevant. We need him. But the reported £45m fee will not be a drop in the ocean. Jeremie Frimpong's move broke the club's previous full-back transfer fee record by over double, which was Nathaniel Clyne for £12.5m. Kerkez's fee - while unconfirmed - could almost quadruple Clyne's record, putting at least £15m on Frimpong's record which might only last for just over a week.

Rasmus Hojlund plays down talk of Manchester United exit: ‘I have a contract until 2030'

Rasmus Hojlund has played down suggestions of a summer transfer away from Manchester United. Hojlund was speaking to local media following Denmark's friendly victory over Northern Ireland on Saturday and insisted he was only focused on his future at United. The 22-year-old struggled for form in 2024-25, scoring just 10 goals across 52 club appearances, including a 21-match goalless streak between mid-December and mid-March. Advertisement 'I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United,' Hojlund said, per Bold. 'I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway.' Hojlund said he had not been thinking about any speculation linking him with a move away from United, adding: 'As I've told you before, I try to stay away from all that, because it's both for better and for worse these days.' United have already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and are working on a deal to sign Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who was often deployed in a deeper role by head coach Ruben Amorim, are the only recognised strikers in United's senior squad, while teenager Chido Odi has also been given first-team minutes. United are likely to be in the market for a new No 9, with Amorim a major admirer of Viktor Gyokeres, his former Sporting CP striker, while Antoine Semenyo, the Bournemouth winger, has also been looked at. The Athletic reported this week that Inter are looking at a potential move for Hojlund, who may become subject to a transfer away if United do sign a striker. Hojlund joined United from Atalanta for €75million plus €10m in performance-related add-ons in the summer of 2023. The Dane has scored 26 goals in 95 games for the Old Trafford club.
