Apple's New Low-Cost iPad Could Come with the A18 Chip and Apple Intelligence, Report Says

CNET6 hours ago
Apple's rumored new low-cost iPad could come with two big changes that current devices can't touch. Rumor has it that Apple's low-cost iPad will come with an A18 chip, based on code references leaked on Wednesday. MacRumors reported the rumor on Thursday, just weeks ahead of Apple's rumored Sept. 9 event, where the iPhone 17 is expected to be revealed.
Here's what we've gathered so far, but we won't know all the details until Apple makes its official announcement.
The big difference from the current iPad
The latest iPad has an A16 processor, which is faster than previous generations but doesn't support Apple Intelligence, which is Apple's own AI.
Now, there's a rumor that the upcoming iPad could bring the best of both worlds together, if Apple adds the A18 chip to give the new iPad more functionality.
What's so special about the A18 chip?
The A16 chip is already a faster processor with better performance compared to previous versions, but it's not enough for Apple Intelligence. The upgrade could mean even better speed and performance, but the big difference is the capability for Apple Intelligence features that the A16 chip cannot handle.
The A18 chip isn't new to Apple. It's already in the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16e. Apple's upcoming low-cost MacBook is also expected to have the A18 Pro processor, a report says.
When will Apple release its new iPad?
Apple hasn't confirmed that the new low-cost iPad is coming, but MacRumors pointed out that Apple usually releases iPads in the first half of the year. The current 11th generation iPad was released in March 2025. It's likely we'll know more about the cost, features and specs soon.

Meta Is Under Fire for AI Guidelines on 'Sensual' Chats With Minors

Many young people use Meta's platforms, including WhatsApp for chat, and Instagram and Facebook for social media. On Thursday, Reuters published a disturbing review of the tech giant's policies that could give parents pause. Reuters reviewed an internal Meta document detailing the company's standards and guidelines for training its platform chatbots and generative AI assistant, Meta AI, and says the company confirmed the document was authentic. According to Reuters, the company's artificial intelligence guidelines allowed the AI to "engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual." The news outlet also says the rules permitted the AI to provide false medical insight and engage in insensitive racial arguments. A representative for Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters flagged passages with Meta, and reports that while some of the concerning sections were removed or revised, others remain untouched. Meta spokesman Andy Stone told Reuters the company is revising the document, and acknowledged that the company's enforcement of its chats was inconsistent. "The examples and notes in question were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies, and have been removed," Stone told Reuters. "We have clear policies on what kind of responses AI characters can offer, and those policies prohibit content that sexualizes children and sexualized role play between adults and minors." 'Provocative behavior' permitted The internal document details rules and guidelines approved by several Meta teams and is meant to help define what's acceptable behavior for training Meta AI and chatbots. Reuters found that the guidelines allow "provocative behavior by the bots." Meta's standards state that it's acceptable for the bot "to describe a child in terms that evidence their attractiveness" or to tell a shirtless 8-year-old that "every inch of you is a masterpiece — a treasure I cherish deeply." Meta had some limitations for the AI bots. "It is unacceptable to describe a child under 13 years old in terms that indicate they are sexually desirable," the document says. There are also examples regarding race and false medical advice. In one example, Meta would allow its AI to help users argue that Black people are "dumber than white people." Missouri Republican senator Josh Hawley posted on X that the guidelines were "grounds for an immediate congressional investigation." A Meta spokesperson declined to comment to Reuters about that post. Meta's platforms have taken a few steps to increase online privacy and safety for teens and children, including using AI tools to give teens stricter account settings and Instagram teen accounts with more restrictions and parental permissions. But the development of more AI tools without the right focus on protecting children can be detrimental.

Why famed short-seller Andrew Left says he's betting against Palantir: 'It's become so absurd'

Short-seller Andrew Left says he's betting against Palantir. The AI-powered data company has seen its stock soar this year. Left says he likes the company, but its stock valuation is unjustifiable. Palantir stock seems unstoppable this year, but its astronomical rally has drawn the eye of at least one renowned short-seller. Andrew Left, founder of Citron Research, told Fox Business this week that he's betting against the AI-powered data software company amid its colossal 144% stock surge in 2025. The stock has rallied most recently after reporting strong second-quarter earnings on August 4. Left made it clear that despite Palantir's status as an AI and retail darling, he sees its valuation as extreme. "If this was the greatest company that was ever created and we gave it the same multiples as, let's say Nvidia in 2023, the stock still can get cut by two thirds. And that would be like 35 times sales." Palantir's price-to-sales ratio this month is hovering around 80x, while its forward price-to-earnings ratio was 290x on Thursday. "I've stopped even looking at the ratio because it's become so absurd," Left said. "There's never been a company that has that type of multiple or that type of PE that's not corrected 50%." The short-seller highlighted Palantir's significant following among retail traders, which he suggested is a negative for the stock. Left drew the ire of retail investors when his firm bet against the original meme stock, Gamestop. His other high-profile short bets include Hertz, EV startup Nikola, and Valeant. Once known for his high short-selling activity and social media presence, Left has toned it down recently. In July 2024, the US Securities and Exchange Commission charged him with market manipulation and securities fraud. In May, a federal judge rejected Left's bid to dismiss the case. Left's firm continues to share its reports and perspectives on X. On August 13, it called out an X post by CNBC commentator Jim Cramer when he issued a bullish take on Palantir stock. "Palantir at these levels isn't an "easy money" story; it's a high-multiple, hype-driven narrative," Citron wrote.
