
Dutch beach beasts find a final resting place in a new exhibition
Now. they have a final resting place in a Dutch city most famous for 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' painter Johannes Vermeer and blue-painted pottery.
The 'bones' of Theo Jansen's 'strandbeesten' — beach animals in Dutch — have taken over a former cable factory in Delft, the small city in the western Netherlands that Jansen has called home for decades.
'During the years, there has been a sort of evolutionary history, you could say. And you could see these animals as sort of natural historical objects,' the 77-year old artist told The Associated Press before the installation's opening.
The Strandbeesten Mortuary, as the exhibition is called, follows the various versions of the mobile sculptures since 1990 when Jansen created the first one from plastic pipes and tape. As the animals evolved, Jansen incorporated plastic bottles, wooden planks, cloth and cardboard.
The life and death cycle of these famous animals — formed mostly out of PVC pipes — has left behind an impressive fossil record, which is on display at the exhibition.
Marloes Koster, who organized the exhibition for Delft's Prinsenhof Museum, said that Jansen's ultimate goal is to create a beast that will live forever.
'He's not there yet, so these are the ones that didn't make it,' she added.
The museum is undergoing major renovations, so Koster and her colleagues have been putting together arts and culture events at alternative venues around the city while the building is shut.
Born near the North Sea, Jansen grew up captivated by the wind that often hits the Dutch coastline. He harnessed it to allow his animals to 'walk' along the beach. Every year, he creates a new strandbeest and, at the end of the summer, declares the animal dead.
'All summer I do experiments, and in the fall I'm a little bit wiser (about) how these animals should survive in the future,' Jansen said.
Many of the visitors to the opening of the exhibition had followed Jansen's work for years and were keen to understand how the strandbeesten had changed over time.
'You see a kind of development in the way he does things. So they start out very simple, and then it gets increasingly complicated. So they evolve,' said Cor Nonhof, a Delft local who had come to see the exhibition with his wife.
Even at the opening, Jansen was already keen to return to the beach to work on the latest evolution of his strandbeesten.
'I cannot do anything else,' Jansen said. 'And I am very happy with that.'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Justin Fields heard all the criticisms — and occasional kudos — that came his way from fans and media during his first four NFL seasons. The New York Jets quarterback would let it affect him, too. It would even shape his own opinions about his play and abilities. No more. He went from the hopeful franchise quarterback of the Bears to out the door after only three seasons, traded to Pittsburgh last year. He started for an injured Russell Wilson and went 4-2 in six games for the Steelers before seeing the bench again in favor of the veteran — who's also now in New York, but with the Giants. During this past offseason, Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets — who immediately labeled him their new starter. Coach Aaron Glenn has regularly praised Fields' confidence and maturity, calling him 'a mature man' Tuesday and adding that 'the outside noise does not bother him.' That, however, has been a process. 'A lot's gone into that, to be honest,' Fields said. 'I would say experiences, for sure. But also, I think my relationship with God. I don't play for anybody's approval. You guys are all going to have your opinion and I'm never going to take any of it personal. Like I said, it doesn't matter. Y'all can have an opinion, y'all could say this and that, but at the end of the day, our lives aren't going to change. 'If I say something to y'all right now, the same thing's going to happen. It doesn't really affect life, it doesn't affect the way we live. So, if you look at it from that perspective, the bigger perspective, no matter what anybody says, it doesn't matter at the end of the day. It has zero meaning to me, to anybody, and God controls everything that happens in this world.' While the 26-year-old Fields didn't detail the events that triggered his religious re-awakening, he acknowledged that the Bible has been even more impactful than any playbook. 'Yeah, I mean, me really getting closer to God, like I said, my relationship, me reading the Bible every day,' he said. 'And if I'm being real, there are some great lines and great wisdom that I didn't even know of. So I'm low-key addicted to getting in my Bible each and every day just because I learn something new every day and I'm able to apply it in my everyday life. That's a trend that certainly did not begin with the announcement of her 12th studio album, 'The Life of a Showgirl, ' on Tuesday. Mexican-American designer apologizes for Adidas sandal design accused of cultural appropriation
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican-American clothing designer Willy Chavarria has apologized for an Adidas sandal he created after being accused by Mexican authorities of 'cultural appropriation' for imitating an Indigenous shoe design. The design launched by Adidas, known as the Oaxaca Slip On, is a black sandal with braided leather straps attached to a chunky sports shoe sole. Mexican artisans and authorities say the intricate leather braids look strikingly similar to the traditional footwear known as huaraches made by the Zapotec Indigenous people in Oaxaca, produced mostly in the town of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag. They have accused the brand and Chavarria of 'cultural appropriation' and of copying the design without the permission of the Indigenous community. Authorities were quick to note that cultural Mexican designs have long been copied by major brands before, and said they planned to tighten laws to protect Mexican designs. Chavarria responded to mounting criticisms in comments sent to The Associated Press on Tuesday. In a statement addressed to the 'people of Oaxaca,' he said that the design was intended to 'to honor the powerful cultural and artistic spirit of Oaxaca and its creative communities — a place whose beauty and resistance have inspired me.' 'I am deeply sorry that the shoe was appropriated in this design and not developed in direct and meaningful partnership with the Oaxacan community,' Chavarria wrote. 'This falls short of the respect and collaborative approach that Oaxaca, the Zapotec community of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, and its people deserve.' Chavarria is a Mexican-American designer, who has risen to fame for his designs exploring Chicano, or Mexican-American, culture, often mixing Mexican themes with American products. His designs include sweaters reading 'Chicano' in red, scripted font, and styles with the Mexican flag and cowboy hats reminiscent of northern Mexican culture. In recent months, Chavarria also was put in the spotlight for a show at Paris Fashion Week that was intended as criticism of the Trump administration's deportation policy.
