Martin Zubimendi's Liverpool 'regret' claim speaks volumes before Arsenal U-turn

Daily Mirror9 hours ago

Martin Zubimendi is closing in on a move to Arsenal, having already rejected Liverpool in the past, and that decision may shed some light on how the player will approach certain fixtures next season
Spain sensation Martin Zubimendi looks set to join the Premier League ranks next season, with Arsenal in advanced talks to secure his signature. And it was the Real Sociedad star's actions in rejecting Liverpool last summer that perhaps revealed a lot about his motivations coming to England.
A move to the Emirates is believed to be on the verge of completion, though there may yet be a spanner in the works. That's following word that new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso wants to sign the player from under the nose of old friend Mikel Arteta instead.

Zubimendi, 25, showcased his value after scoring in Sunday's UEFA Nations League final against Portugal. And although Spain eventually lost the decider on penalties, he underscored his qualities after playing the full 120 minutes for Luis de la Fuente's side.

The coveted Spaniard has been on the radar of several top English clubs for the last year-and-a-half, but it seems the Gunners are close to winning the chase. Despite Liverpool's previous attempt to entice Zubimendi to Anfield almost 12 months ago, it appears that Arsenal's persistence could soon pay off.
Reflecting on his decision to snub Liverpool and stay with Sociedad, Zubimendi told reporters back in October 2024: "My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times. So far, things have gone well for me. It is true that there was a lot of noise. I went through uncomfortable moments.
"The best thing for me was to stay here [at Real Sociedad] and I am happy and at peace. There is a lot of noise because of the press but in the end everything is easier than all that.
"Of course, I don't regret it, I can't think that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made my decision from within, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don't affect me. I see potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I'm excited about having a good season."
One can perhaps understand why some players may have been cautious about joining Liverpool in such a period of transition. At the time of their Zubimendi interest, the Reds had just bade farewell to Jurgen Klopp and faced an uncertain future.

Then again, it could be that Zubimendi simply isn't fond enough of the Merseysiders to ditch his boyhood club. Or perhaps he was simply holding out for an offer that interested him more, and Arsenal appear to meet the standard in that regard.
Despite Liverpool's interest in nabbing Zubimendi, his choice to stay didn't stop Arne Slot from winning a Premier League title in his debut campaign. Liverpool even came close to winning a treble of trophies before agonising losses in both the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals.

Arsenal, by comparison, finished a distant second in the Premier League and only made it to the third round of the FA Cup. It looked as though Arteta's title drought might end in the Champions League, though both that and the Carabao Cup campaign came to an end in the semi-finals.
Not that it appears to have deterred Zubimendi as a switch to north London moves within reach. And there may be one future rival he's particularly motivated to meet in the event he does move to England this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres furious with Sporting Lisbon after learning of transfer 'lie'

Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is likely to be on the move this summer but he's been left fuming with his club for demanding more for him than they agreed Viktor Gyokeres has been left fuming with Sporting Lisbon after they demanded more for him than they promised as he looks for a way out of the Portuguese club. The Swede has just helped them land the domestic double and, after choosing to remain last summer, had an agreement with them that they would let him depart for significantly less than his release clause. Whilst they've honoured that Sporting have still be asking for more than he expected. ‌ The Lisbon outfit have been demanding £67million for him. Previously they agreed that they would demand £50m plus £8.4m in add-ons this summer - meaning they asked for almost £10m more, reports Record. It has left Gyokeres fuming and he's removed the club's name from his social media platforms. ‌ The player has already turned down a potential move to Saudi Arabia after Al-Hilal saw a £55million offer rejected. He is the latest striker to rebuff the Middle East league with Manchester United and Arsenal still keen. The Swede is one of Europe's most sought after strikers after breaking the 50 goal barrier with Sporting Lisbon. He's been tipped for a Premier League move but he was recently offered the chance to land fortunes by moving to the Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal, who have just appointed for Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi as manager, had been looking to land Victor Osimhen. However the Nigerian knocked them back after his loan stint at Galatasaray with his parent club, Napoli, looking to cash in. That led the Saudis to turn their attention to Gyokeres but the Swedish frontman has also said no to a lucrative offer. He could've earned an annual salary of £30m but wants to continue competing in Europe, reports L'Equipe. It means both Arsenal and United are free to pursue a move for the 27-year-old, who previously played in England for the likes of Swansea and Coventry City before his career was transformed by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese boss is looking to bolster his forward line and could pursue a reunion with Gyokeres. It is understood that Sporting would sanction his sale for around £60m - despite looking for more so far this window - and the player himself is open to the move despite them not having Champions League football. Arsenal have been touted as his other option. It is well documented that the Gunners want a No.9 but their preference looks to be Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig with discussions ongoing over a move for the Slovenian. Gyokeres himself has remained coy on his own future. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Norwegian boss tells ex-Celtic star to change clubs

It comes after the 27-year-old played just three times for Brentford at the centre of defence last season. Solbakken would like Ajer to turn out in his natural position more regularly, and thus thinks he should leave the Premier League outfit. Read more: The boss spoke after his side's 3-0 win over Italy last Friday evening, in which the ex-Celt completed 90 minutes at centre half. "He can be a very good and stable centre-back, and he was today, but he has to change clubs," said Solbakken [Sport Witness]. "He cannot play right-back in every third game if he is to be a proper, safe and good centre-back. Because he has all the prerequisites. "I think Ajer would have been better suited to playing centre-back in another league. He has had some tough injuries in England. "He will never be a super right-back, at the same level as he is as a centre-back. At the age he is now, I think he is allowed to put his foot down. You can't be a 'cover' right-back at his age now. "Many people get angry with me when I say things like that publicly, but I think we should be a little honest about it. Not that I'm going to interfere with Brentford selling him, but he's at an age and is a type of player who can develop into a very stable, good defender at a high level."

Chelsea warn AC Milan over Mike Maignan deal as transfer talks drag on

Chelsea will not revisit a deal for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan if the move is not completed before Tuesday's transfer deadline. The Blues have been in negotiations with the Serie A giants for the French stopper as they haggle over a transfer fee. An opening offer of €15million (£12.6m) was rejected by Milan and it is believed that a deal could be struck for just €18m (£15m), meeting in the middle as the Italians value him at €25m (£21m). In the grand scheme of football transfer fees it seems like a tiny hurdle to overcome, but a deal is proving more difficult than you might think. Sky Sports report that negotiations have been continuing throughout Monday and an agreement has not been reached. The report states that unless a transfer has been finalised by 7pm on Tuesday June 10 then Chelsea will walk away from a deal. Chelsea offered one of Djordje Petrovic or Kepa Arrizabalaga to Milan in a proposed swap deal for Maignan, but the Rossoneri have no interest in either goalkeeper, favouring a cash-only agreement. The 32-cap France international is out of contract at the San Siro in 2026 and could leave on a free transfer next summer. The transfer window closing on Tuesday evening is unusual and has been brought in to allow clubs participating in the Club World Cup to bring in players before it starts. There are now two transfer windows this summer, with the first running from June 1-10 before the Club World Cup starts on June 15. There is then a second window which runs from June 16 till September 1. The Sky Sports report states that the Maignan deal is different to the one that Chelsea are pursuing for Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens in that Tuesday's deadline is not a final one. More Trending Discussions are ongoing over a move for the English winger and the Blues are happy to revisit them after the first transfer window closes if the transfer is not done in time. Dortmund turned down an initial bid worth €35m (£29.5m) for the 20-year-old and want a significantly bigger offer, closer to €50-60m (£42-50m). Much like with Maignan, it is just the transfer fee that is the issue, with Gittens keen on the switch to west London. Personal terms have been agreed between Chelsea and the winger, but club-to-club negotiations have some way to go.
