One of the largest banks in Europe confirms data loss after alleged cyberattack on its supplier

Time of India18-06-2025
UBS Group AG
has confirmed that company information was stolen in a cyber attack targeting one of its suppliers. This follows a report claiming that a hacker compromised the data of more than 1,30,000 employees of its supplier Chain IQ. Earlier, Swiss newspaper Le Temps reported that the employee data was published on the darknet after a
ransomware attack
on
Chain IQ
, a procurement service provider that spun off from Europe's seventh-largest bank in 2013. A hacker group identified as World Leaks, previously known as Hunters International, is reportedly responsible for the attack, according to the report. However, UBS has not confirmed the specific nature of the information that has been lost in the incident.
What UBS said about the data breach
In a statement to Bloomberg, the Swiss bank said:
'A cyber-attack at an external supplier has led to information about UBS and several other companies being stolen. No client data has been affected. As soon as UBS became aware of the incident, it took swift and decisive action to avoid any impact on its operations.'
UBS' confirmation came after its supplier Chain IQ confirmed that it, along with 19 other companies, was targeted in a
cyberattack
. However, the supplier did not specify which data was compromised as well.

The leaked information reportedly included UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti's direct phone number and employee details such as addresses and office floors.
Swiss private bank Pictet was also affected, but said the exposed data was limited to recent invoice details with some suppliers.
'The information obtained through the cyberattack on ChainIQ systems does not contain any client data of Pictet,'
the bank noted.
Recent increase in cyberattacks on European banks
In 2024, cyberattacks on Swiss financial institutions increased by nearly 50%, according to the country's financial regulator, which identified outsourcing critical operations to third parties as a major operational risk.
Elsewhere in Europe, the European Central Bank warned that some banks are still falling short in addressing cyber threats, pointing to
data breach
es at ABN Amro and Banco Santander caused by hacks at external suppliers.

Private firm hires 1,700, govt hopes striking staff will join

Chennai: Even as about 1,500 sanitary workers abstained from work protesting waste management privatisation, the Greater Chennai Corporation's private contractor for Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones directly recruited 1,700 workers to restart work. Out of the 3,800 slots, GCC has now reserved 2,000 slots for the protesting workers, and only 300 of them have rejoined, with the rest continuing to abstain from work. Still, 1,800 slots are vacant. The govt has informally instructed the contractor not to hire more people but to wait for the protestors to come back. However, the contractor—Chennai Enviro—told TOI that they are only paid based on manpower deployment as one of their key performance indicators. "If they don't join, we will have to fill vacancies soon," said Parisutham Vedamuthu, project head of Chennai Enviro. In Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone, the contractor increased the number of trips from 32 to 96 in the last ten days, while in Royapuram, they have gone up from 77 to 128, collecting a total of 25,000 tonnes from the two zones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo These zones generate about 1,000 tonnes a day and have a population of 20 lakh. "We still have key neighbourhoods of George Town, Central, and Egmore to cover. We will wait for a few days, and if people don't join, we will hire more people under the National Urban Livelihood Mission scheme for daily wages," Vedamuthu said. Regarding failed negotiations with protestors and fears over migrant workers being hired, municipal administration and water supply department minister K N Nehru said he spoke to the unions for four days straight. "The contractor won't recruit any migrant workers. The CM has told us to resolve this amicably," he said. Meanwhile, the contractor has scaled up operations with 310 battery vehicles to collect waste in three shifts. "We are doing manual and mechanical sweeping, and secondary transportation. We are building resource recovery centres and procuring tipper-lorries," Nehruadded. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Chakradharpur rail division counsels locals on track safety

1 2 Jamshedpur: After a major derailment was avoided, officials of the Chakradharpur railway division have gone on alert mode to prevent such incidents caused by miscreants. Late on Sunday, the Itwari-Tatanagar Express (18110) narrowly missed a major accident after it ran over a rock placed by miscreants on the down line near the Sonua railway station in Chakradharpur, West Singhbhum. An immediate investigation by the track maintenance staff, along with the Railway Police Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel, into the incident found that large stones were placed on three adjoining tracks on both up and down lines. Incidentally, the Shalimar-LTT Express, the Karambhoomi Superfast Express, and the Tatanagar-Itwari train, which were about to proceed towards Rourkela, were stopped at the Sonua station till the stones were removed. According to railway officials, a joint team of railway security and state police has been formed for surveillance of the tracks on the Chakradharpur-Rourkela section on an immediate basis. Additionally, four separate teams of RPF visited nearby villages at Sonua station on Tuesday to counsel the villagers, particularly the teenagers. "Along with the counselling, an extensive probe is underway to identify the culprits for necessary legal action," the senior divisional manager (commercial) of Chakradharpur division, Aditya Chaudhary, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally | Zen Life Mag Undo Earlier on August 7, the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express avoided a potentially serious accident when it hit a six-meter-long rail (a disintegrated piece of the track) lying on the track at the Mahadevsal station. The impact of the collision was so significant that the rail flew into the air and landed on a passenger seating bench on the platform. Fortunately, no one was sitting on the bench at the time. The cattle guard of the Duronto Express was also badly damaged in the collision. The incident happened after the track maintenance squad of the railways, which was shifting the redundant rails from the site, panicked upon seeing the train approaching rapidly, dumped the rail on the track and hurriedly ran away from the spot. Ahmedabad spacetech firm joins consortium for indigenous satellites

1 2 Ahmedabad: India's first fully indigenous commercial earth observation (EO) satellite constellation is taking shape, and Ahmedabad is playing a starring role. PierSight Space, a spacetech firm from the city, has joined a four-member private consortium selected by Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), under the department of space, to build and operate the network. The Rs 1,200 crore project, under a pioneering public-private partnership (EO-PPP) model, will deploy 12 satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for round-the-clock imaging in all weather. The consortium is led by PixxelSpace India and also includes Satsure Analytics India and Dhruva Space. Officials of IN-SPACe, headquartered in Ahmedabad, said that for the first time in India's space history, a private grouping will fund, design, build, and operate such a system, with the constellation expected to be launched over the next five years. The resulting EO data will serve critical sectors including climate change monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, marine surveillance, national security, and urban planning, said experts. Gaurav Seth, co-founder and CEO of PierSight, said their primary task will be to develop SAR technology, which allows Earth observation round the clock, in all weather conditions. "This programme ensures that India's critical sectors will no longer have to wait for foreign data or compromise on timelines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Our constellation will put sovereign EO capabilities into the hands of Indian decision-makers, ensuring security, speed, and self-sufficiency," he said. "The real game-changer will be the context built over time, enabling insights that can drive both public and private sector decisions." Experts point to real-world applications such as mapping flood zones and detecting landslides after a cloudburst, like the recent one in Uttarakhand, or monitoring crops during the monsoon when cloud cover hampers optical satellites. SAR data can also support industries such as mining, infrastructure, and logistics, giving both govt and business stakeholders more accurate and timely intelligence.
