Colombian musicians teach creativity to Draperstown children

BBC News24-02-2025

It is often said that music is a universal language. And that was certainly the case in Draperstown in County Londonderry.Pupils from St Mary's Primary came together in rhythm with visiting musicians from Columbia in South America. The Mr Klaje Collective from Cali in the South American country rap, sing, dance, play and drum.In their home city they use the power of music to bring former gang members together, promoting peace and reconciliation through teaching creativity.According to guitarist Juan Manuel Gomez, music is an ideal way to do that."The music connects the people and secures a space to start to speak about the problems, the life," he told BBC News NI.
'It was very fun'
Along with the British Council, Dr Edwar Calderón from Queen's University of Belfast (QUB) is one of those behind the collective's visit to Northern Ireland."The idea is to show how different music can go together and how music put together can create a dialogue between people and bring people together," he said.Draperstown is fortunate enough to have its own music hub in the centre of the town, run by Glasgowbury.Around 200 young people from the area go to Glasgowbury each week to learn instruments and play music together. So it was an ideal venue to bring the Colombian musicians together with the P5 pupils from St Mary's to make sweet music.Nine-year-old pupil Saorla is already an enthusiastic and accomplished musician."I play a lot of music, I play at least four instruments," she said."I play the harp, and the whistle and the piano and the violin."But sampling drumming with the collective brought a new string to her bow."There's different types of drums you can play," she said."It was very fun actually, I'd never played drums before."For her St Mary's classmates Yusuf and Olcán, learning to rap was a hit lesson."It was cool and it was nice to listen to some different music," Yusuf said."And we learned some Spanish and we got to count to four in Spanish," Olcán added.
There have been concerns, though, that arts subjects like music can sometimes be squeezed out of primary school timetables.A recent report from the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) said, for example, that many teachers were finding it challenging to "ensure that there is time for art and design within the curriculum".That was despite the fact that creativity was found to be important in improving children's wellbeing.
St Mary's teacher Caroline McCartney said it was vital to give pupils time to take part in music, art and other imaginative and creative subjects."It's very important for children to get time to be creative and to express their thoughts and ideas whether it be through art or through music," she told BBC News NI.And it is not just important for children but adults, too.Classroom assistant Aga Mura also took the chance to dance and sing along to the Mr Klaje Collective as they worked with St Mary's pupils."It was absolutely fun for everybody," she said.

The repeated references to Colombian Shakira's Hips Don't Lie grated on viewers very quickly, and they're fully expecting to hear it throughout the series. One person complained on X: "i love shakira but the 'hips don't lie' jokes need to GOOOOOO." Another said: "how many times are we gonna have to hear hips don't lie shakira shakira ffs." Shakira entered the villa first alongside Meg Moore, 25, and the two ladies quickly bonded. Shakira set about telling Megan that she was 'too glamorous for a 9-5' and must do something more exciting for a job. Meg quickly put her straight, revealing she was in fact a payroll specialist which prompted Shakira to squeal that she was a "corporate girlie". Have YOU got a story or an amazing picture or video? ITV Love Island fans fiercely defend Scots star Alima Gagigo after brutal coupling up comment

Love Island fans were all saying the same thing just minutes into the first episode of Love Island tonight after Scots beauty Alima Gagigo received a harsh remark from the boy she had just chosen to couple up with. Love Island kicked off its twelfth season tonight with thirteen new contestants entering the iconic villa in the hopes of finding love under the Spanish sun. Seven gorgeous girls and six handsome hunks made their debut on the ITV dating show on Monday evening as they were welcomed by host Maya Jama. Among them is Glaswegian beauty Alima Gagigo who is the only Scot on Love Island this year so far. The 23-year-old graduate, chose to blindly couple up with construction project manager Blu Chegin after being drawn to his dating profile, but it seems there is already trouble in paradise for the pair. ‌ After Maya revealed that he had been chosen by Alima, Blu made a controversial comment as he said: "Every girl looks beautiful." Maya replied to his eyebrow raising remark as she repeated: "Yes but Alima chose you." ‌ Fans at home were quick to spot the awkward moment as they took to X to fume over Blue's careless remark. Alima, having already caught viewers attention thanks to her fiery stand out Scottish accent, has already garnered support from viewers after Blu brutally told her: "You're not my type on paper." Viewers at home were left furious by his comment as one wrote: "Alima is 100% out of Blu's league. His attitude is gross. #loveisland". After Alima told Blu she's not "feeling him", another fan chimed in: "LOVE that Alima called Blu's disrespectful a** out. #loveisland." ‌ A third agreed: "Alima clocking Blu's nonsense already. Glad she's a smart girl. #loveisland" A fourth remarked: "I need Alima to couple up with someone else so I can vote blu out effective immediately." Someone else applauded Alima: "Alima knowing her worth from day 1 & not settling for Blu #loveisland #loveislanduk". ‌ Another awkwardly pointed out: "Blu said he didn't have a type in his interview but Alima is not his type on paper. #LoveIsland" However, Alima herself has also already ran into an awkward moment which did not go unnoticed by fans. After claiming she could speak Spanish, she was put on the spot and asked to show off some of her multilingual talents. ‌ Fans were left cringing by the awkward scene and branded the 23-year-old as a 'liar' as one wrote: "I don't think Alima speaks Spanish #LoveIsland." ‌ Another remarked: "Alima a damn liar about I speak Spanish #LoveIsland." A third joked: "Alima is me when I lie on my CV. Don't ask me questions", alongside two laughing emojis. Somebody else who was amused by the moment wrote: "Alima adding Spanish to her CV just cos she speak Portuguese is too funny to me", alongside a laughing emoji ‌ A fifth wrote: "Alima is giving everyone that took GSCE Spanish and can only say hello my name is, guiltyyyy #LoveIsland". However, Alima could now find herself in trouble for tomorrow night's episode after bombshell American Islander Toni walked in to the villa and decided to couple up with Ben, who was originally coupled up with Shakira, leaving Shakira single. Maya announced at the end of Monday's night episode that Shakira would need to spend the next 24 hours getting her graft on and getting to know the other boys to keep her place in the villa. ‌ In scenes that are likely to air on ITV on Tuesday evening, Shakira will select the boy she wants to steal from another girl. However, there is a catch. The chosen male Islander must agree to the swap. ‌ If Shakira choses a boy and they don't agree to the coupling up, they will remain with their current partner and Shakira will be dumped from the villa. If Shakira is successful and the swap goes through, the partner of the boy she chooses will pack their bags instead. As Alima and Blu have already hit a rough patch, could Shakira use this as an opportunity to seek out Blu and send Alima packing? Viewers will need to wait until tomorrow night to find out what happens. Love Island airs on Tuesday June 10 on ITV at 9pm.

ITV Love Island 2025 couples in full as Maya Jama kicks off show with fresh twist

Love Island returned to screens tonight for the ITV show's twelfth season with twelve new contestants making their dramatic entrance into the iconic villa. Love Island has made it's highly anticipated return and twelve new contestants have made their dramatic entrance into the vilia tonight with Maya Jama reprising her role as host on the ITV dating show's twelfth series. However, a major twist caught the islanders off guard before they even got a chance to see each other face to face. This year's series kicked off with the girls arriving first, entering in pairs as they grinned with excitement over who and what awaits them under the Spanish sun. But instead of the traditional ceremony where singles step forward for their favourite potential partner, Maya unveiled a fresh twist which threw the first coupling into total chaos just minutes into the show. ‌ The girls were shown six giant red hearts, each of which featured a short dating profile from the boys. The information they were given only stated their name, age, height, job and a cheeky tagline. They then had to make their decision on who to match with based on nothing but their profiles. ‌ One of the profiles said: "I like to play hard and work harder!" Another boasted:"I've got good chat, good vibes, and great teeth." Following some intense conversations, Maya counted down and the girls made their move, sprinting towards the heart they felt the most drawn to. Moments later, the boys made their entrance one by one to discover who they'd been paired with through blind selection. Here are the Love Island 2025 couples so far.. Shakira & Ben Marketing exec Shakira from Burnley declared she was looking for a "tall, charming, witty guy with big arms and a big smile". ‌ She chose Ben Holbrough, a 27-year-old private hire taxi driver who joked his love life was "bankrupt" - but he may be cashing in now. He said he is on the market for a woman with "good chat, good vibes, nice teeth and good eye contact". ‌ Sophie & Harry Motivational speaker Sophie, 29, from Manchester chose to couple up with suave gold trader Harry Cooksley. Harry, 30, is the oldest contestant in the villa so far but with his model credentials and "Surrey Zidane" football finesse, Sophie seems more than content. ‌ Sophie, who branded herself the "CEO of empowerment", is searching for a man who's attentive and funny. Harry, the man of many talents, previously disclosed he actually moonlights as Declan Rice's body double for close-up shoots, but let's see if his personality matches up to his looks. Helena & Conor Cabin crew assistant Helena went for Northern banter and found herself paired up with professional rugby player Conor Philips. ‌ Conor revealed he likes "a dominant woman" with a sense of humour. Meanwhile, Helena values personality and says she can "pretty much laugh herself into bed", so these two may have already met their match. Meg & Dejon Payroll specialist Meg hails from Southampton, bringing business metaphors and bold chat to the villa as she said she aspires to turn her "bankrupt" love life into booming profits. ‌ Meg selected personal trainer and semi-pro footballer Dejon Noel-Williams, having been drawn to his sporty bio and smooth one-liner, and when he stepped out, she definitely did not look disappointed. Dejon, who has rubbed shoulders with the likes of David Beckham, thanks to his famous ex-footballer father, said he was looking for someone confident and real. ‌ Alima & Blu Alima Gagigo from Glasgow is the only Scot in this year's series with the 23-year-old graduate choosing to couple up with construction project manager Blu Chegini, who had a very cheeky backstory. ‌ Blu grew up with a mum who owned a sex shop in Spain, which he has confessed earned him some teasing from pals, who he jokes were unaware that "their parents were buying stuff from there". Blu's confidence and focus on "personality and family" had Alima seemingly intrigued from the get-go. Megan & Tommy Irish musical theatre star and energy broker Megan, who hails from Dublin, was beaming after she chose down-to-earth landscaper Tommy Bradley. ‌ The 24-year-old is known for his tight bond with his boxer brother, Jamie Bradley, and says he is looking for someone with ambition, kindness, and a big personality. Megan, who joked she loves a "bit pasty" lad like Timothée Chalamet, may have found her villa match in sweet-natured Tommy.
