Colombian musicians teach creativity to Draperstown children
It is often said that music is a universal language. And that was certainly the case in Draperstown in County Londonderry.Pupils from St Mary's Primary came together in rhythm with visiting musicians from Columbia in South America. The Mr Klaje Collective from Cali in the South American country rap, sing, dance, play and drum.In their home city they use the power of music to bring former gang members together, promoting peace and reconciliation through teaching creativity.According to guitarist Juan Manuel Gomez, music is an ideal way to do that."The music connects the people and secures a space to start to speak about the problems, the life," he told BBC News NI.
'It was very fun'
Along with the British Council, Dr Edwar Calderón from Queen's University of Belfast (QUB) is one of those behind the collective's visit to Northern Ireland."The idea is to show how different music can go together and how music put together can create a dialogue between people and bring people together," he said.Draperstown is fortunate enough to have its own music hub in the centre of the town, run by Glasgowbury.Around 200 young people from the area go to Glasgowbury each week to learn instruments and play music together. So it was an ideal venue to bring the Colombian musicians together with the P5 pupils from St Mary's to make sweet music.Nine-year-old pupil Saorla is already an enthusiastic and accomplished musician."I play a lot of music, I play at least four instruments," she said."I play the harp, and the whistle and the piano and the violin."But sampling drumming with the collective brought a new string to her bow."There's different types of drums you can play," she said."It was very fun actually, I'd never played drums before."For her St Mary's classmates Yusuf and Olcán, learning to rap was a hit lesson."It was cool and it was nice to listen to some different music," Yusuf said."And we learned some Spanish and we got to count to four in Spanish," Olcán added.
There have been concerns, though, that arts subjects like music can sometimes be squeezed out of primary school timetables.A recent report from the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) said, for example, that many teachers were finding it challenging to "ensure that there is time for art and design within the curriculum".That was despite the fact that creativity was found to be important in improving children's wellbeing.
St Mary's teacher Caroline McCartney said it was vital to give pupils time to take part in music, art and other imaginative and creative subjects."It's very important for children to get time to be creative and to express their thoughts and ideas whether it be through art or through music," she told BBC News NI.And it is not just important for children but adults, too.Classroom assistant Aga Mura also took the chance to dance and sing along to the Mr Klaje Collective as they worked with St Mary's pupils."It was absolutely fun for everybody," she said.

Backstage with Shakira as we reveal the truth about her life on the road and she teases massive UK shows
Read on to learn more of the tour A LOVE SHAK Backstage with Shakira as we reveal the truth about her life on the road and she teases massive UK shows Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) 'DON'T you see, baby, this is perfection?' Shakira sings in front of a 65,000-strong crowd at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. As she wiggles her bum and gives the audience a cheeky grin, it is hard to disagree with the Colombian superstar. Outselling Beyonce and Lady Gaga, Shakira has hit a new stride in the five years since she last performed at the Florida venue for her Super Bowl halftime show with Jennifer Lopez, which for many artists is considered the pinnacle of their career. But now she is having the best time on the road with her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour — translated as Women No Longer Cry — which is why she invited me, Bizarre's Howell, out to Miami where she lives with her two sons. Shakira took me backstage for a UK newspaper exclusive at the first of two sold-out shows on Friday. Read More on Showbiz breaking cover Jamie Borthwick seen for the first time since EastEnders suspension After her performance, I couldn't help but tell her how much I'm looking forward to her long- rumoured UK dates next year. 'Better journey' Confirming they will indeed be happening, she says: 'I can't wait.' After giving me a massive hug, the down-to-earth and downright lovely star continues: 'You flew all this way just for me? Thank you so much.' And reflecting on the show, she beams: 'I had so much fun.' That's evident from the moment Shakira bursts on to the stage, after a film showed an AI version of the singer with a missing arm, emerging from a pile of sand and putting itself back together. That symbolism is important because this is Shakira's first tour since a torrid spell which threatened to derail not just her career but her life. Huge pop star set to make a spectacular comeback with a string of UK gigs She has been dragged through the Spanish courts over an unpaid tax bill, which was settled in November 2023. At the same time, she had a highly publicised split from former footballer Gerard Pique after 11 years together. It followed allegations he had cheated. The hurt has inspired a lot of Shakira's art. She opens the two-hour show with her 2024 song La Fuerte, which features lyrics about waking up alone and deleting an ex's number. In an empowering speech, she tells the crowd: 'Many of you know that the past years haven't been the easiest for me, right? But who doesn't have a fall here and there, right? What I've learned is that a fall isn't the end, but the beginning of an even better journey.' 10 She opens the two-hour show with her 2024 song La Fuerte Credit: Getty 10 Track La Fuerte features lyrics about waking up alone and deleting an ex's number Credit: Getty 10 Shakira balances her own turmoil with fun and froth — with a whopping 14 outfits on show Credit: Getty 10 Shakira, 48, seems to have discovered the elixir of life, because she looks and moves like someone half her age Credit: Getty And there are more nods to those difficulties in her personal life. During Te Felicit, a song in which she says congratulations to a man who has broken her heart, she tries to reprogram a dancer dressed as a male robot so that he isn't a misogynist. But he still touches her bum and turns out to be a dud in bed when she gets cosy with him in the centre of the stage. During one interlude, there are visuals of a wolf with two cubs, representing the She-Wolf singer and her sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, ten, who both lend their vocals to song Acrostico. But Shakira balances her own turmoil with fun and froth — with a whopping 14 outfits on show. For her second song, the catchy Black Eyed Peas collaboration Girl Like Me, she unzips her jacket to show a silver vest top, which she then tears off to reveal a glittery pink mini dress. There is a sea of lights across the stadium as fans wave their light-up wristbands in unison. And Shakira pulls on everything from sparkly bodysuits to ball gowns and bra tops. I'm told it took ten months to design the show, and given the attention to detail you can see why. At 48, Shakira seems to have discovered the elixir of life, because she looks and moves like someone half her age. By the halfway point of the concert, temperatures are 30C and I have sweat running down my face. Yet Shakira, who is marking three decades since her first headline concert, is running across the stage and twerking without so much as a moist brow. In fact, she looks even fitter and healthier than when she first became a household name in the UK in the early-Noughties. She is in tip-top form for this tour, which kicked off in February and Shakira describes as her 'most ambitious'. She is constantly working out and has two physiotherapists with her on the road. And I can attest that her backstage catering area, where I had dinner before the show, has plenty of healthy options including grilled red snapper, Peruvian chicken and cauliflower steak. A significant part of the show features Spanish-language songs, which have sometimes held the singer back in the UK, given most of us Brits can barely understand a word. Tender moment But as more and more non- English acts gain traction here in Blighty — such as K-Pop stars BTS and Blackpink and Spanish-speaking rapper Bad Bunny — now is her time. At the show she is joined by two special guests: Puerto Rican singer Ozuna, to perform their song Monotonia together for the first time, and Spanish Alejandro Sanz for the danceable La Tortura. During Soltera she pole- dances on a giant letter S before changing the pace for the piano-driven ballad Ultima, which she sings atop a mound of diamonds. When the tour does eventually come to our shores, it is bound to be the English language tunes that keep the audience on their feet. There's an understated rendition of her 2002 belter Underneath Your Clothes, a traditional dance with knives for her megahit Whenever Wherever, and a mass howl-along for She-Wolf, complete by a gigantic wolf image that towers over the audience. Then she throws an on-stage, multi- coloured carnival for 2010 smash-hit World Cup anthem, Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). One surprising omission from the setlist is Beautiful Liar, her 2006 collaboration with Beyonce, which topped the charts here. But in a tender moment, Shakira reveals it was her fellow artist's 2023 Renaissance tour that inspired her to organise her own. Shakira, whose North American dates were upgraded from arenas to stadiums due to overwhelming demand, explains: 'To see this place this packed, it's a dream for me. It's surreal. 'The last time I came to Hard Rock Stadium, I saw Beyonce's show and I said to myself, 'How amazing would it be if I could play the stadium one day?' 'How amazing that tonight, I'm here playing two stadiums. I have the best crowd in the world. You make all of my dreams come true.' There is no doubt that she is stronger than ever before. This show cemented Shakira as a true music icon. JET setter Rita Ora was back on stage at the World Club Dome festival in Frankfurt on Saturday, mere hours after singing at Washington Pride on Friday. But he won't have long to wait for music from them as I'm told they've almost completed their first album in eight years.

Amanda Holden, 54, sends fans wild with her latest bikini pics
Amanda Holden sent fans wild as she stripped down to a tiny pink bikini in her latest social media video. The 54-year-old Britain's Got Talent judge donned matching pink heels to strut around a swimming pool on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca. Looking more like she was walking down a catwalk, the age-defying broadcaster and actress looked tanned and toned as her long blonde hair billowed behind her in the short clip, as Calvin Harris' latest track Blessings played over the top. In the caption, Amanda revealed she was in Majorca to film an ad campaign for Revive Collagen. She wrote: "Shooting a new campaign for @revivecollagen #mallorca," before revealing her bikini was by swimwear brand Melissa Odabash, which is loved by celebrities. And fans couldn't quite believe what they were seeing, as one wrote in the comments: "Imagine being in your 50's and looking that good in a bikini," as another replied: "Right?" As many more posted heart and flame emojis, a third said: "Looking fabulous!!!" A fourth declared her "perfection", as a fifth commented "what a body." A sixth joked: "Look amazing, wish I could walk in those shoes!" Her celebrity pals were equally in awe. Ex-EastEnders' star Jo Joyner wrote: "You're ridiculously hot" followed by a flame emoji. "There she is," said former The Only Way Is Essex star Sam Faiers. Vicky Pattinson simply wrote: "AMANDA!!!!" with four flame emojis. While her Heart FM co-star, former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts commented: "Jheeez." It comes days after Amanda went 'naked' during her radio show following yet more Ofcom complaints about her outfits on Britain's Got Talent. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, Amanda said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" Jamie replied: "Do you know what... you are wearing clothes, aren't you?" But though it looked like she might not be, Amanda was in fact just wearing a pink strapless dress which wasn't visible behind her monitor. Joking about her choice of outfit for the day, Amanda said: "I just looked [at myself] and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" Amanda's BGT finale dress, which looked almost bridal in a white silk fabric with a low cut front, wasn't a hit with some viewers at home who complained that both her and co-star Alesha Dixon's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". Ofcom revealed they'd received 72 complaints in total. But thought she is regularly under fire for her risque outfits, Amanda has vowed to never tone down her fashion choices. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress, which went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. She's previously revealed how all her outfits are checked before she goes on stage and joked there's an even a 't*t committee' who tell her whether she's alright to wear a dress or not. "There's a whole body of people that knock on my door and come and stare at my chest before we go on air," she shared. "There's a t*t committee. There are so many brilliant people, they come down, knock on the door and there's the lady, who's the producer, who says, 'Mandy, it looks great'." In another interview, Amanda told Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" On her most complained about dress, she added: "It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."
