We should stop our infatuation with Reagan's nonsensical 'Government is the problem' mind-set. Instead, properly fund, staff, and professionalize our air traffic control system.

Bring the system into the 21st century
No, Jeff Jacoby, we do not need to privatize our air traffic control system. An alleged nonprofit system is not called for. Profit will always be a driving factor. Just ask anyone who ever worked at a nonprofit hospital. Canada is not the United States. It does not have the air traffic volume of this country.

How then do we fix our air traffic control system? Simple. President Trump is bragging about all the money his tariffs are bringing in. Just use that money to bring America's air traffic control system into the 21st century. Now, that's putting 'America first.'

If Canada's system is so much better, let's sign it up
I think Jeff Jacoby is on to something regarding the US air traffic control system. If Canada's not-for-profit corporation, NAV Canada, is safer, more modern, streamlined, and 'doesn't cost taxpayers a cent,' why shouldn't the United States choose NAV Canada to operate the US system?
If National Grid, a British entity, and one of the largest utility companies in the world, can provide power systems in the United States, why can't NAV Canada serve this country? Since it's not politically influenced and has a solid financial status, it can implement a state-of-the art transition without the excessively expensive learning curve needed to update the current US operation. It will be a godsend, and no new high-priced CEO to boot.

Dollar steady before inflation report, U.S.-China tariff deadline
The U.S. dollar stabilized on Monday after last week's losses, as markets await Tuesday's key U.S. CPI report for July and focus on developments in trade talks between Washington and Beijing ahead of a deadline to avoid the imposition of higher tariffs. The dollar index was flat at 98.25 after a 0.4% decline last week. Against the yen, the dollar was unchanged at 147.685 yen, with Japanese markets closed for the Mountain Day holiday. Trade talks were in focus as Trump's August 12 deadline for a deal between the U.S. and China loomed, particularly around chip policy. "The market has fully priced in the idea that we're going to get an extension," said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group Ltd in Melbourne, adding that another 90-day truce was most likely. With the U.S. and China seeking to close a deal that would avoid imposing triple-digit tariffs on each other's goods, the Financial Times reported on Sunday that chip manufacturers Nvidia and AMD agreed to allocate 15% of their revenues from sales in China to the U.S. government under an arrangement to obtain export licences for the semiconductors. The report follows a warning that Nvidia's H20 chips pose security concerns for China, a social media account affiliated with the country's state media said on Sunday. "I don't know if that's going to be a good thing or a bad thing, but if it puts closure on the matter it's not a bad outcome," Weston said. With AI now ubiquitous and early-stage sustainability startups multiplying, this year's cohort reflects both immediate and longer-term bets. IAG is more than doubling the intake for its startup accelerator, selecting 29 companies for 2025. Now in its ninth year, the increasingly influential list has become an industry bellwether for where airline innovation is heading and what's worth backing. This year, the airline group – which includes British Airways and Iberia – is placing its biggest bets on AI and climate tech. The startups are drawn from 11 countries and, for the first time, split into two streams. New for 2025 is a 'Discover' track for early-stage startups, particularly those in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and energy transition tech. These 15 companies will participate in a six-month mentoring program to prepare them for possible future deployment. It runs alongside the more commercially focused "Deploy" track, which offers 12-week proofs of concept directly with IAG operating companies. The IAGi Accelerator is the group's flagship innovation program, fast-tracking collaboration with startups across six focus areas including AI, robotics, sustainability, and next-gen computing.
