Moms reveal what parenting advice they would give themselves if they could go back in time

Nine in 10 moms said being a mother is both the hardest and the most rewarding thing they've ever done, according to new research.
The survey of 2,000 moms with a child between the ages of 1–6 found 93% of respondents agreed with this sentiment, recognizing the joy and the challenges that come with being a mother.
To help as they navigate motherhood, respondents were asked what advice they'd like to give themselves if they could go back to when their baby was born.

'Be brave,' 'be patient,' and 'the kids need a happy mom, not a perfect one' are all things moms wish they could go back in time to tell themselves. Other helpful tips included a reminder 'that your baby loves you unconditionally and you are doing great' — and 'it is going to be okay, and the lack of sleep will be worth it.'
Another shared, 'Give yourself grace — perfection isn't the goal. Ask for help, sleep when you can, and know this chaos is love in its purest form.'
Commissioned by Sunsweet Growers Inc. and conducted by Talker Research ahead of Mother's Day, the survey found this advice may come in handy, as nine in 10 moms agreed — no one can ever be 100% prepared to be a parent.

When asked what surprised them about being a parent, about a third weren't expecting the feeling of isolation that can come from being a new mom (35%) or how hard it was to keep up healthy habits for themselves (33%).
Part of why it might be hard to maintain healthy habits is because of how different mealtime looks with a little one at home: About a third of respondents' diet is made up of food originally for their kid.
Moms surveyed said about 16% of their diet consists of leftovers from their child (the sandwich crusts left on their plates, other foods they don't want to eat, etc.), while 17% is made up of snacks they purchased for their child.

After having a child, it's not only their own healthy habits that respondents are worried about: 91% said they want to set their child up for healthy habits at a young age.
Parents are encouraging these healthy habits by giving their little ones different kinds of foods to try (61%), encouraging them to play outside (58%), and trying to instill a love of learning in them (58%).
That's in addition to teaching them about different emotions (55%), ensuring they have a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and veggies (54%), and limiting the amount of sugar and treats they have (50%).
'Starting healthy habits at a young age creates a routine that when your body feels good, everything else feels good, too,' said Sunsweet's CJ McClellan, Vice President of Marketing, North America. 'We hear often that eating well, for example, including veggies and fruits like prunes and prune juice in diets, began at childhood, and we appreciate seeing this lesson instilled in the next generation too.'
To encourage healthy eating habits, moms surveyed are giving their kids different healthy options and letting them have a choice (57%), ensuring their favorite healthy snacks are always on hand (47%), and making healthy options 'fun' (43%).

Moms are likely modeling these healthy habits, too. The survey found that 63% of moms surveyed often enjoy the same snack as their child, perhaps to ensure they instill healthy habits from the beginning.
When they select snacks for their children, moms are looking for certain qualities: it has key nutrients (fiber, potassium, vitamin K) (21%), is easy to prepare (18%) and has 'clean labels' (no artificial sweeteners, colors, etc.) (17%). Another thing moms look for is foods that will help their child's digestive health (79%).
This is also true for juice. The vast majority of kids drink juice, and when picking juice for their children, some of the factors moms look for include 100% juice options (78%), no artificial flavors (38%), and other functional benefits (such as digestive health) (17%).

'Research shows that both kids and adults don't consume enough fiber, yet only 21% of moms are looking for these nutrients in their snacks,' said McClellan. 'Prunes and prune juice are perfect for moms and families who are looking for sweet and tasty options that offer so many benefits.'

Captain Marvin Taylor III was a committed father and husband, working overtime to provide for his growing family Tragically, he died hours after his wife gave birth to their fifth child His grieving family is still in "disbelief," Fire Chief James Kubinski tells PEOPLEA Texas fire captain died hours after welcoming his fifth baby and weeks after his death, his grieving family and coworkers are still grappling with their new reality. 'Your fifth child comes into the world and, a few hours later, you leave to go check on the other four kids and pick them up to bring them back to meet their new sibling.' Fire Chief James Kubinski, who worked with Captain Marvin Taylor III before the fatal accident on Mother's Day, tells PEOPLE. "He never came back," adds Kubinski. Taylor had just left a hospital in Austin after meeting his newborn when he was hit from behind in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 11. 'It was an intoxicated driver traveling at over a hundred miles per hour,' says Kubinski, 49. 'That driver was immediately detained by police and arrested." Officials told CBS affiliate KWTX that 34-year-old Rodney Bremby was arrested in Taylor's death. A spokesperson for the Travis County Jail confirms to PEOPLE that Bremby arrived on May 11 and was held on a $103,000 bond. He is charged with intoxication manslaughter and was released two days later on a personal recognizance bond. The spokesperson says he will wear an ankle monitor until his court date. It is unclear if Bremby has retained representation. An investigation is ongoing, the Austin Police Department confirms to PEOPLE. The City of Austin Municipal Court did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. In the weeks since Taylor's death, his family is still in 'disbelief,' says Kubinski. Now Taylor's wife is not only 'adjusting to a newborn, but she's adjusting to a newborn without her husband," he remarks. The fire department in Killeen — which consists of 264 sworn civil service personnel and about a dozen administrative staff — is also shaken by the sudden loss of one of its longstanding leaders. Taylor joined the fire department in 2014, and recently started working in the training division 10 months ago. He quickly doubled the pool of new applicants from approximately 150 to 400 in that short period. Kubinski admired his passion and commitment to the job, adding that he couldn't speak any higher of someone in Taylor's position. Last fall, as a heavy storm system ravaged parts of Texas, the captain was one of three service members deployed from the Killeen Fire Department. During that deployment, Taylor helped save a stranger from floodwaters, for which he received a Medal of Valor. 'That was part of the eulogy that was shared by one of his shift mates,' says Kubinski. 'They talked about that incident with so much pride.' The captain was the sole provider for his growing family, often taking extra shifts to support his wife and children. The kids, all boys, were named after Catholic saints. In one of Kubinski's last interactions with Taylor, they talked about the new baby. 'I said, 'Which baby is this? Which number is this?' He said, 'This is my number five,' ' recalls Kubinski, who joked that Taylor could have his own 'engine company.' 'He laughed,' says Kubinski. 'He was a family man.' The fire chief says that navigating the news of Taylor's death has been one of the hardest things he's personally experienced, as it has been for many who knew Taylor. Despite their collective pain, the department rallied around Taylor's family. A two-person honor guard stood over Taylor's remains for 10 days, which was followed by a funeral service at a catholic church in Copperas Cove, a miles-long procession and final honors at the graveside. Separately, a fund that was created in Taylor's memory has raised more than $145,000 as of Tuesday, June 3. In the survey of 2,000 Americans, one respondent shared, 'The most heroic thing my father has ever done for me was during Hurricane Harvey — he trudged through the waters to come get me.' Another reminisced, 'He stopped working and took care of me when I had a car accident.' The poll uncovered that dads truly are the most helpful heroes, with people sharing stories of selflessness and kindness. Seventeen percent said their dad is the person they go to the most when they need advice and one in four (25%) shared that their father is the person they call first in a stressful situation when they need help or support. In fact, more than a fourth (29%) revealed they've called their dads for help in the last week. Some of the most heartwarming things dads have come to the rescue for have been helping their kid heal from a breakup (19%), making a rent payment their child couldn't afford (22%) and helping their child figure out their life goals (30%). 6 Seventeen percent said their dad is the person they go to the most when they need advice. They've helped their kids cultivate practical skills like driving (49%), fixing things around the house (43%) and changing a tire (31%) as well as interpersonal tools like problem solving (47%), communication (39%) and making a good impression (37%). According to respondents, when it comes to self-care, the dads have been helpful there as well, teaching their kids the importance of maintaining their physical (40%) and mental health (30%) as well as the value of splurging on yourself now and again (28%) and having a polished look and appearance (25%). 6 Dads have taught their children how to stand up for themselves (38%) and how to be their best selves (32%). More than a quarter (26%) even said their dad bought them their first deodorant. 'We commissioned this study in honor of Father's Day to showcase just how much we owe our dads — from teaching us all things practical, like how to drive, to essentials like how to make a good first impression and the importance of a polished, confident look,' said Chase Purles, chief executive officer at SweatBlock. 'Grooming is especially important for making a good first impression on someone and feeling confident in everything you do.' A good number (39%) confessed they get embarrassed if they're visibly sweaty around others, and shared recent embarrassing sweaty moments like 'When I met my daughter's new boyfriend on FaceTime. Yes, I was embarrassed. I made fun of myself and told him I was sorry he had to meet me looking subhuman.' Or, 'I once had to give a big presentation at work with little preparation time. I was visibly sweating and felt embarrassed, but I took a deep breath, focused on the key points, and pushed through. Afterwards, I felt proud [of myself] for handling the pressure.' 6 Most respondents (59%) rated themselves as 'very' or 'extremely confident.' 'Being confident in yourself and your appearance will allow you to direct your focus to the most important things in your life,' said Purles. 'A strong, effective deodorant is key here. No one likes to be damp sweaty, especially when stressed and problem solving. As respondents said, it's one of the most crucial things for feeling poised all day long.' 'When I wanted to go into business and asked him to [be a] co-signer and put up his house as collateral and he did.' 'On my wedding day, he had to change [a] flat tire before we left for my wedding…it was truly stressful but we made it and his tuxedo did not get damaged.' 'My dad passed away when I was 14 but right before he passed he bought me tickets to go see my favorite singer in concert, George Michael, and he gave me money to buy stuff at the concert [and] it was a dream come true.' 'He worked several jobs in order to be able to afford to put me in college so I won't have to get so many student loans.' 'When I lost my job a few years ago, it was one of the most stressful moments. My dad immediately offered to assist us out financially until I could get back on my feet, which greatly relieved my burden.' 'When my first husband died and left me a widow when I was 32.
