Cops beat elderly vendor for not paying 'bhatta'
An elderly vendor, who was brutally tortured by police in Saddar area, has exposed the reality of police road inspection as a bid to extort money from street vendors.
A video of the conversation recorded by a citizen on mobile phone, between the pushcart puller, who sells used jeans on his cart, has gone viral on social media.
In the video, the elderly man explains the reason behind the police brutality. He said, "the cops extort Rs50 to Rs100 from me daily. I didn't sell anything on th e day of the incident, so I apologised, but they started beating me instead. Their worth is just Rs50."
Citizens present at the scene were also seen condemning this incident of police brutality in strong words.
SSP South also remained unaware of the performance of the Saddar police.
However, in a statement issued by him on Wednesday, it was mentioned that a cart puller was allegedly tortured by some police personnel during a road inspection in Saddar.

'Kidnapper couple' arrested,two girls recovered
District Malir Investigation Police have arrested a couple, involved in kidnapping children, and recovered two kidnapped girls from the couple's house. One of recovered girls was kidnapped three years ago. A case of the kidnapping of 14-year-old Laiba Batool was registered at Quaidabad police station, against unidentified suspects, on the complaint of the abductee's brother, Muhammad Munshi Khan. Investigation revealed that after Laiba's disappearance, a trace of a family's migration from the neighbourhood was found. Based on intelligence, police then conducted a raid, recovering Laiba from the possession of the relocated family. The accused, Sajid Altaf Hussain, and his wife Haseena alias Saima, were arrested. Police also recovered Reena, who went missing from within the limits of Sukhan police station three years ago. She was taken into custody, however, her family had not registered a case of her kidnapping or disappearance, and so police are searching for them. The recovered girls will be presented in court to record their statements, while investigation of the arrested couple is underway. Minor girl rescued The Clifton police have rescued a kidnapped minor girl within 72 hours and arrested the rickshaw driver involved in the crime. The incident of kidnapping was reported from DHA Khayaban-e-Shamsher, Phase V. According to the mother of the kidnapped girl, her five-year-old daughter Rashida along with her brother Waheed was returning from eating at Badar Commercial when a rickshaw driver offered them a ride. On the way, the rickshaw driver stopped in front of a shop and gave Rs50 to Waheed asking him to bring biscuits from the shop. As the boy went into the shop, the rickshaw driver escaped taking the minor girl with him. The police registered a case and with the help of modern technology and CCTV footage arrested rickshaw driver Nazeer within 72 hours. The police safely rescued the minor girl, seized the rickshaw and also recovered two fake press cards from Nazeer. The girl was handed over to her parents. The accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrate South who handed him over to the police on three-day physical remand.

Court clerk sentenced to death for lawyer's murder
A Dera Ghazi Khan court clerk has been sentenced to death and fined Rs600,000 after being found guilty of murdering a junior lawyer within the premises of the district court. District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Abbas announced the verdict on Monday, concluding a five-month trial in which the accused, Rehmatullah, was convicted of fatally stabbing junior lawyer Saddam Hussain and injuring another lawyer, Akhtar Hussain Lashari, during a violent incident on December 28, 2024. The attack occurred inside the District Courts complex. Saddam Hussain, the brother of Advocate Tajammul Shabbir, died at the scene. Advocate Akhtar Hussain sustained injuries in the assault. Fellow lawyers managed to overpower Rehmatullah on the spot and handed him over to Civil Lines Police. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by the victim's uncle, Advocate Hafiz Ashiq Hussain. Police completed their investigation and submitted the charge sheet without delay. The trial was conducted under the supervision of Judge Abbas with the prosecution led by Shamshad Ahmed Qureshi. After hearing the case, the court sentenced Rehmatullah to death for murder and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 in compensation to the victim's family. For the injury caused to Advocate Akhtar Hussain, the convict received a five-year prison term and an additional Rs100,000 in compensation. Failure to pay the fine will result in six more months of imprisonment. Following the verdict, Rehmatullah was transferred to Central Jail.

Sindh bans 4-seater rickshaws; amends vehicle registration rules
Sindh government on Friday approved a ban on four-seater rickshaws and online as well as on the counter sale of tinted windows, police lights, and sirens. The meeting chaired by Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar discussed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules also approved outsourcing the motor vehicle fitness check. IGP Sindh, and secretaries of law, transport and mass transit, excise and taxation, along with the DIG traffic were present in the meeting. They approved mandatory fitness certification for commercial and non-commercial vehicles, It was decided that a draft would be prepared and submitted to the government for approval and ratification of the amendments. Participants approved a complete ban on four-seater rickshaws, and decided to make it mandatory for water tankers and dumpers to install trackers and sensors. Minister Lanjar stated that third party services will be engaged to issue fitness certificates to commercial and non-commercial vehicles, with formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed with them. Violation fines were also approved, including Rs200,000 fined for wrong-way driving of government vehicles, Rs25,000 for motorcyclists driving against traffic, and Rs100,000 for four-wheelers violating one-way rules. Motorcyclists driving without a license are to be fined Rs25,000, while car drivers are to be fined Rs50,000 for the violation. Meanwhile, first-time offenders of one-wheeling or drifting are to be fined Rs100,000, increasing to Rs200,000 and Rs300,000 for repeat offenses. Minister Lanjar also approved the installation of at least five cameras in heavy/load-carrying vehicles. Additionally, e-challans for traffic violations will be delivered to vehicle owners' registered home addresses, and vehicles with unpaid fines will not be approved for sale or transfer. The minister further stated that the traffic, transport, and excise systems will now be interlinked and operated online, while a dedicated Traffic Magistrate will be appointed to handle traffic law violation cases. Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawala assured the department's full support in enforcing traffic regulations and emphasised that no registration or route permit will be issued to four-seater or larger rickshaws, and a crackdown will be launched against any such vehicles on the roads. He further stated that all organisational steps to establish the vehicle fitness service structure will be completed promptly, after which strict enforcement of fitness requirements will follow.
