
Obesity Before Pregnancy Linked to Autism-Like Behavior in Kids

A mother's weight before pregnancy could be linked to autism-like behaviors in her children.
This is the conclusion of a study by researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, who found that obesity can trigger metabolic shifts that cause lasting epigenetic changes in a mother's eggs.
These changes are passed on to the developing embryo and affect genes involved in brain development, including "Homer1," a protein important for regulating synaptic signaling, learning, memory and response to neural activity.
Obesity and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rates are increasing worldwide (though for autism this could be because of increased awareness).
More than 2 in 5 adults (42.4 percent) are diagnosed as obese in the U.S., while 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults are living with ASD across the country.
While ASD is not an illness—and just means people's brains work differently from others'—the researchers said their findings mark a "significant advancement" in understanding how early life factors can shape long-term brain development.

Conducting experiments in mice models, the team detected increased levels of a specific Homer1 gene isoform that is known to interfere with neural connections—and is associated with behaviors linked to ASD—in male offspring of obese female mice.
"This work highlights how a mother's health prior to pregnancy, not just during gestation, can shape her child's brain development in profound ways," said paper author and epigeneticist professor Alika K. Maunakea in a statement.
"We were surprised to find that even without direct maternal contact after conception, these epigenetic imprints from the egg carried enough weight to alter behavior."
To isolate the effects of pre-pregnancy obesity away from those during gestation, the time between conception and birth, the researchers used an in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer model. This approach allowed them to study early epigenetic programming more precisely.
Behavioral assessments of adolescent male mice revealed impaired social interactions and repetitive behaviors. These traits, which mirror characteristics of ASD, were linked to altered gene regulation in the brain, the researchers explained.
"By leveraging our institute's expertise in developmental biology, reproductive science and epigenetics we are beginning to understand how early-life programming can ripple through generations," said paper author and reproductive biologist professor Monika Ward in a statement.
The researchers say the findings may lead to early interventions, potentially even before conception. However, they hope future studies will explore nutritional or pharmacological therapeutic strategies that may reverse or mitigate these effects.
There is no single known 'cause' for autism, but research suggests it could develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
"Brain scans show differences in the shape and structure of the brain in people with autism compared to in neurotypical development. Researchers do not know the exact cause of autism but are investigating a number of theories, including the links among heredity, genetics, and medical problems," the Autism Society website outlines.
"There has been misinformation about the cause of autism. It is not caused by vaccines or due to parenting style or nutrition."

Lot number 615 appears on both the wooden box of each cheese and the case. As of August 14, the FDA has reported no illnesses in the United States tied to the product. Six Planets Line Up in Parade: Where and When to See Rare Spectacle

Sky-gazers are in for a treat this month as six planets are set to align in a dazzling early morning display known as a "planetary parade"—the last such spectacle of this year. Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are all making their appearance in the eastern sky just before sunrise, offering a unique opportunity to witness this celestial phenomenon. Planetary parades of smaller number are fairly common. This month's alignment is particularly striking, however, because four planets will be visible to the naked eye and two via binoculars or telescopes. The best view window is over the next week, just before dawn. Observers should look toward east, ideally from a location with a clear horizon and minimal light pollution. Best conditions for sky watching are typically found away from populated centers, but altitude, direction and local geography also play key roles. Higher places offer clearer skies by avoiding low-altitude haze and pollution. While remote locations also help, you don't need to be far from highways—just away from bright local lights. Light pollution varies by direction, so even near cities, looking away can offer darker skies. Locations like mountain campgrounds can offer excellent views toward darker horizons. Is Artificial Intelligence Dumbing Down Cancer Doctors?

The study, published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, suggests that the growing reliance on AI in medical procedures may diminish doctors' diagnostic skills. Researchers found that endoscopists—physicians who perform colonoscopies—were significantly less effective at detecting precancerous polyps without AI assistance after becoming accustomed to using the technology. "We have to admit that we were not expecting to find out such a big difference in quality parameters of colonoscopy," Dr. Marcin Romańczyk of the Academy of Silesia, one of the lead study authors, told Newsweek in an email. Why It Matters Colonoscopies are a primary method for preventing colorectal cancer by identifying and removing adenomas. AI systems designed to improve this process have shown promise in increasing the diagnostic rate in real time. However, the study's findings could show that doctors who are overly reliant on AI tools might experience a deskilling effect in which clinicians gradually lose proficiency in recognizing polyps unaided. "On one side, AI usage is becoming standard of care," Romańczyk told Newsweek. "On the other hand, we are aware that we can not correctly state how our behavior has been modified by its usage." What to Know The drop in performance was not attributed to fatigue or lack of training. According to the study, all participants were highly experienced, and AI was the only modifiable factor among them. "I think that our findings, regardless of the fact that they were a surprise for us, can be explained by other uses of new technology," Romańczyk told Newsweek. "I don't personally feel confident anymore traveling on my own without any software assistance to an exact spot in another city, even within my region, because I've got used to using online map systems. "As we find that it can be reproduced on other examples, we find it crucial to investigate this field more broadly in the future." What People Are Saying In a commentary published alongside the study, University College London's Dr. Omer Ahmad wrote, "These findings temper the current enthusiasm for rapid adoption of AI-based technologies [...] and highlight the importance of carefully considering possible unintended clinical consequences." What's Next The authors of the study called for further research into how AI may influence the abilities of doctors in other fields. They also stressed the need for solutions to prevent skill decay, including revised training protocols or limits on continuous AI use. "In our opinion, usage of AI is inevitable, and we should do our best to be prepared as well as possible to achieve the best outcomes from AI assistance," Romańczyk concluded.
