
Honeywell launches AI building management for Australia, NZ
Platform features
The system, called Connected Solutions, is designed to allow building operators and facility managers to control software, systems and devices through a single, integrated interface. It features energy-management tools aimed at supporting decarbonisation, advanced encryption for cybersecurity, and remote monitoring and diagnostics to lower labour requirements and costs. The platform also offers predictive maintenance prompts to help identify and resolve issues before they escalate.
The launch of Connected Solutions comes as building owners contend with several industry challenges, including ageing facilities, increased costs from system downtime, shortages of skilled labour and tightening cybersecurity regulations. Honeywell says the new platform is intended to address these matters by bringing disparate building systems together under one interface. "From aging buildings and rising downtime costs to skilled labour shortages and growing cyber guidelines, building owners and operators face a complex landscape of global trends that are constantly making operations more complex and costly. To address this, Honeywell's Connected Solutions allows building managers to link critical building software, technologies and devices together to streamline management and compliance and help protect uptime," said Billal Hammoud, president and chief executive officer of Honeywell's Building Automation segment.
Technology and integration
Connected Solutions is built on Honeywell Forge, the company's industrial IoT platform. The platform enables managers, including facility and multi-site operators as well as integrators, to oversee all Honeywell-related systems using one dashboard. When deployed across a building or campus, the system provides comprehensive, real-time data about critical systems, along with guidance on troubleshooting and optimising operations.
The installation process uses AI to speed deployment, reportedly allowing the system to be up and running within hours. Honeywell states this reduces both the time and disruption typically associated with installing building management systems, alongside reducing related labour costs.
Security and sustainability
In response to growing concerns about cyberthreats, Connected Solutions incorporates advanced encryption measures. Its remote diagnostic features aim to reduce onsite labour by allowing for offsite monitoring, while predictive maintenance helps address issues early in order to avoid service disruptions and more significant repair expenses.
Connected Solutions also includes energy management functionalities designed to help organisations work toward decarbonisation goals. By monitoring and optimising building energy use through the platform, operators can target efficiency improvements and cost reductions.
Industry adoption
Early adopters of Connected Solutions include Verizon and Vanderbilt University. Verizon has begun using the platform within its facilities worldwide.
According to Honeywell, Verizon is leveraging Connected Solutions to anticipate and address critical system issues before they grow into larger problems, aiming to reduce downtime and maintenance costs. Vanderbilt University has also integrated Connected Solutions into about 10 per cent of its campus buildings, choosing the platform to boost system efficiency, cut energy use and improve the occupant experience, particularly in older facilities. "Honeywell's Connected Solutions is an innovative platform offering the tools to use real-time data and AI-driven insights to help us optimise our buildings," said Alex Kohnen, chief facilities officer, Vanderbilt University. "We look forward to creating a better ecosystem for our students, faculty and staff."
Honeywell's expansion of Connected Solutions into Australia and New Zealand follows feedback from early adopters and growing demand for tools that can manage increasingly complex building operations whilst addressing current challenges in energy use, labour and cybersecurity.

Covid spending can be justified, despite Treasury report
Coverage of this report has focused on an implication that Treasury were opposed to much of the Covid-19 response and had sought to limit the extent of Government spending. Others have noted that the report does not say this directly, though the selective quotes from advice at different stages do not exactly discourage this reading. In the interests of full disclosure, I was an adviser to the Minister of Finance Grant Robertson from December 2020 onwards. Unsurprisingly, my perspective often differed from Treasury (which in some ways was a key required skill for that job), and readers may reasonably take that into account in the criticisms that follow. The risks highlighted in the report around the use of fiscal policy tend to underline the view that 'cyclical management should mostly be left to monetary policy run by an independent central bank'. This is not a new position – it is such an established aspect of economic orthodoxy that it is known as the 'consensus assignment'. Finance Minister Grant Robertson during the pandemic. Photo / Pool Why, then, would we use fiscal policy in response to a shock? Recent decades have seen very low interest rates, and therefore situations where central banks cannot cut rates to the level they believe necessary to support the economy. This issue is known as the 'effective lower bound' and was one of the major preoccupations of economic debates following the global financial crisis. However, it was clear that Treasury had done limited thinking on how fiscal policy should be used in a crisis. This was despite the fact that the official cash rate was just 1% as the pandemic approached. I recall my surprise at being briefed on a work programme to review Treasury's macro-economic framework – thinking that I would have assumed it had already taken place sometime in the previous decade. At different stages Covid-19 required spending to support overall economic activity (i.e. stimulus) as well as more targeted spending for workers and businesses directly affected by lockdowns. The LTIB notes that Treasury did support large-scale spending responses in the initial stages, but then 'advised shifting towards more targeted fiscal support and recommended against further stimulus from Budget 2022 onwards'. Covid-19-related supports had continued during this period, because large numbers of New Zealanders continued to be affected by Covid-19, most notably during the Auckland lockdowns. But the purpose of this spending was to support people and businesses during a time when normal economic activity was not possible, not to stimulate more economic activity. Despite the large initial cost of the wage subsidy scheme in 2019/20, the largest year for Covid-related spending was actually 2021/22, owing to the combination of business support programmes and the ramping up of the national health response. Photo / Supplied A further, separate category of spending is funding allocated through the Budget operating allowance, which is typically a mix of new spending and the increased cost of existing spending (cost pressures). In late 2021, the operating allowances for upcoming budgets were increased compared to what was previously signalled. Treasury has at times raised concerns that adjusting future allowances might undermine credibility; however, it was not an uncommon occurrence for parts of Treasury to raise such concerns and for other parts of Treasury to put advice to the Minister suggesting that allowance should increase. It is important to understand that budget allowances are not an end in themselves. Adhering to previously planned allowances come what may does not amount to a sensible fiscal strategy, and governments tend to put more focus on whether those allowances are contributing to them keeping debt or deficit levels in line with their intended objectives. The operating allowance for Budget 2022 was large, at $6 billion. But based on forecasts at the time, that level of spending was consistent with Government debt peaking at a much lower level than earlier forecasts, and the Government's books returning to surplus much earlier, in 2023/24. At the point Treasury states that they were not advising further stimulus, this was very much the Government's view as well. Economic and fiscal forecasts were looking much different from mid-2022 onward, and the economy continued to slow as the Reserve Bank tightened interest rates in response to rising inflation of the sort that was experienced around the world. While larger proportions of budget spending during this period were trying to maintain existing public services in the face of high levels of inflation, the other side of this story is the fact that forecast tax revenue has continually failed to eventuate. Photo / Mark Tantrum Ahead of Budget 2024, Nicola Willis alluded to a further downgrade in economic and fiscal forecasts, saying 'Sadly, I've learned to dread what comes out of the forecasters' mouths when they come into my office'. If nothing else, this is a sentiment shared across successive offices of the Minister of Finance. Repeated downward revisions of the tax-to-GDP ratio over time means that Budget 2025 forecasts for the current fiscal year are a full 3.3% of GDP lower than what forecasts in mid-2022 had anticipated. This has contributed to OBEGAL surplus getting pushed further out in the forecast period (and more recently, only showing surpluses on the Government's self-invented measure, OBEGALx). If decision-makers had cared only about inflation and nothing else, fiscal policy could potentially have done a lot more to reduce economic activity. With the Government not willing to resort to tax increases, more contractionary fiscal policy would have meant absorbing more of the burden of constraining demand through deteriorating public services, with the Reserve Bank having to do less through the OCR. Given the ongoing pressure on the health system today, we should be glad this was not the path that was taken. But far from being critical of this Budget spending, Treasury was also raising concerns that spending was not high enough. In the half-year update in 2022, Treasury expressed concern about what it described as the largest fall in real government consumption since 1987. As late as October 2022 Treasury was advising the Minister of Finance to increase the allowance for the next Budget from $4.5 billion to $5b. This incongruous array of advice was not a matter of mutinous radicals seizing control of the Government's lead economic adviser. Treasury was trying to tread the same narrow path that the Government was. The economy as a whole was hitting up against its capacity, and vulnerable New Zealanders needed targeted support towards the cost of living. Every dollar of additional spending risked adding to inflation and every dollar of spending that was withheld meant that rising costs would hit core government services or households directly. It is appropriate that we try to learn lessons from the experience of Covid-19. It is reasonable for people to disagree with some aspects of the fiscal response and it is highly unlikely that every decision taken was the right one. But the economic response was overwhelmingly guided by officials' advice rather than contrary to it. There may now be unease among some public servants about the level of debt that New Zealand assumed or the spending pressures that it is facing. But the other side of that debt is the businesses that are still operating, the people who were kept in work and the loss of friends and family members that were avoided because NZ chose to support each other through that most complex and challenging time. Honeywell, Stereolabs launch mobile AI solution for warehouses
Honeywell has announced a collaboration with Stereolabs to introduce a mobile solution for measuring the size, volume and weight of boxes and pallets within distribution centres. The solution integrates Stereolabs' stereoscopic camera, employing a vision-based artificial intelligence perception system, with Honeywell's SwiftDecoder barcode-decoding software. The unified system is capable of capturing product dimensions, weight, barcode data, optical character recognition information, and high-quality imagery. All captured details are automatically uploaded to a central database, offering a comprehensive record of the volume occupied by each pallet, their composition, as well as the size and weight of products undergoing transport. The solution aims to transition operations away from manual methods or fixed systems, allowing organisations to adopt a mobile approach that can adjust to the dynamic needs of modern distribution centres. The companies stated that many warehouses and logistics providers currently rely on manual techniques such as tape measures and weigh scales to record product information, or fixed systems including scan tunnels to identify and measure packages on conveyor belts. In comparison, the mobile solution seeks to facilitate more flexible daily operations. Combined technology The joint solution brings together the Stereolabs ZED stereoscopic camera and calculator with Honeywell's SwiftDecoder software. This combination enables the capture of essential weight and dimensional data for products. The subsequent automatic upload of data to a central database gives businesses real-time insight into the volume and composition of goods loaded in each trailer. This information can then be used to plan efficient and cost-effective transportation, loading, or de-stocking activities. "Products stored in a warehouse and transported on a truck contain a wealth of data, from weight and size to the item's name, expiration date and warning label on the box," said David Barker, President of Honeywell Productivity Solutions and Services. "Finding a way to capture this data in one place and use it effectively to streamline processes presents a challenge for many operations. By combining the strengths of Honeywell and Stereolabs, we can help the supply chain operate more efficiently and address major pain points." The intent behind this integration is to help logistics operators improve their planning capabilities for truck loading, understand the number of vehicles needed for transporting goods, and efficiently trace items in transit. Implementation and integration Olivier Braun, Chief Product Officer at Stereolabs, commented on the process of combining technologies: "Integrating Honeywell's SwiftDecoder software together with our ZED cameras and advanced perception stack was a smooth and efficient process. We are now able to deliver a rich, all-in-one data capture solution - combining product dimensions, barcode data, optical character recognition (OCR) information and high-quality imagery - that is seamlessly ready for integration into any warehouse management system." The new system is intended to be compatible with existing warehouse management platforms, supporting efficient and accurate data integration for operators. Cyber scams soar in New Zealand as AI & crypto drive threats
Gen's latest threat report for the second quarter of 2025 details a significant surge in cyber threats ranging from cryptocurrency scams to sextortion and data breaches across both global and New Zealand contexts. The analysis, compiled by Gen's team of cybersecurity researchers, recorded a substantial year-on-year increase in scams and malicious activity, suggesting that both criminal tactics and the scale of potential harm are evolving, largely fuelled by economic pressure and the availability of AI-powered tools. Crypto scams and economic uncertainty According to Gen, crypto scams have become an area of particular concern, with blocked attacks rising from thousands to millions within a few short months. The reported increase was 69,508% globally, with New Zealand experiencing an even sharper uptick of 77,721%, markedly above the worldwide average. "This quarter's global trends reveal a troubling surge in cyber threats, from AI-powered ransomware to cryptocurrency scams and sextortion," said Mark Gorrie, Managing Director APAC for Gen Digital. "With the rise of AI and widespread data breaches, scams have become faster, more personalised, and harder to spot. New Zealand is not immune to these trends." Gorrie added, "In a weaker economy, people facing financial uncertainty are increasingly drawn to quick fixes like crypto, creating fertile ground for scammers to exploit." Sextortion and personalisation The report highlights a 170% rise in sextortion scams within New Zealand during Q2/2025, compared to a 100% global increase. New Zealand now ranks 19th on Gen's list of the top 20 countries most at risk of sextortion. This list spans a diverse range of affected countries, including Japan, Czechia, Singapore, and South Africa. Sextortion scams typically involve criminals threatening to release compromising content unless a ransom, often in cryptocurrency, is paid. Recent tactics reportedly include the use of personal data harvested from major breaches, along with the manipulation of services such as Google Maps to make threats appear more credible and invasive. Attackers have used actual names, addresses, and email addresses to heighten victims' anxiety and pressure them into complying with demands. Facebook and technical support scams Elsewhere, the report identified a significant rise in scams exploiting social media. Worldwide, 14% of blocked Facebook-related threats in Q2/2025 were tied to so-called Technical Support Scams. These frequently present as fake Messenger-style pages that attempt to lock browsers and prompt users to call fraudulent help lines, leveraging Facebook's global reach and advertising platform for scalability. Push notifications and phishing In New Zealand, there was a 278% rise in malicious push notifications during the quarter. These deceptive pop-ups, often disguised as system alerts or video players, direct users to phishing websites or trigger unwanted downloads. The tactic is being increasingly employed to lure users into scams or malware installations. "Scammers are counting on panic clicks; they exploit the split second where you react before you think. And that single click can take a person straight to a scammer's doorstep," Gorrie explained. "If an alert feels aggressive or off, trust your instincts and double-check through your antivirus software directly, and avoid giving notification permissions to untrusted websites." AI involvement and ransomware Gen also revealed that Q2/2025 saw the takedown of the first known ransomware strain built with the assistance of generative AI. The malware, named FunkSec, managed to encrypt data and demand payment, but Gen's research team was able to discover a cryptographic flaw and, in coordination with law enforcement, help victims restore their files without payment using a free decryptor issued by Avast. Since this intervention, there has been no reported activity from the FunkSec group. Other key findings The global threat landscape continues to expand, as highlighted by a 21% rise in data breach events, and almost a 16% increase in breached email addresses. The report also notes that financial scams climbed by 340% and that small businesses continue to be vulnerable to infostealers, exploits, and remote access attacks. Of particular concern is the resurgence of older threats such as DealPly adware in markets including the United States, Brazil, France, and India. Malvertising and various scam types - especially phishing, generic scams, and e-shop or dating scams - ranked among New Zealand's top threats for the quarter. Remote access attacks grew by 62% and malicious push notifications spiked by 317% globally, indicating a broadening portfolio of tactics used by cybercriminals. Efforts to counter these risks are ongoing, with Gen's researchers continuing to collaborate on threat mitigation tools and public awareness campaigns.
