
The ‘GrubHub' for LA's hungry: Bringing the film industry's excess food to people in need
For 15 years, Hillary Cohen was one of them, working as an assistant director on TV shows like 'Mad Men,' 'The Office,' and 'NCIS: Los Angeles.' One of the perks she enjoyed were the crew meals provided on set – gourmet, chef-prepared food like steak and seafood.
But she'd long been troubled by what happened to the leftovers.
'They would just throw it out,' said Cohen, 40. 'I was always told, 'We can't donate the food. … It's too hard. If someone gets sick, it's a liability.''
While the federal Good Samaritan Act has protected most food donors since 1996, what Cohen witnessed was a long-accepted practice on sets throughout the industry. Eventually, frustration with the situation drove her to start Every Day Action, a nonprofit that picks up extra food from film sets and other businesses and delivers it to communities in need around Los Angeles. Since 2020, the group estimates it has redistributed more than 270,000 meals.
'We're the GrubHub,' she said. 'We take it from point A to point B.'
For years, Cohen had a solution in mind about how to distribute surplus food from sets to people in need, but her 16-hour workdays didn't give her much opportunity to pursue it. The Covid-19 pandemic changed that, bringing the film industry to a screeching halt. At first, Cohen threw herself into mask making – she sewed more than 5,000 masks – but in the summer of 2020 she realized she could use this time to turn her vision for rescuing food into reality.
'I'd been saying for a long time that someone should do something about this, and no one had done it,' she said. 'So, I realized … maybe I'll just try.'
She called Samantha Luu, a colleague who was also deeply bothered by the issue, and together they got to work. Neither had any nonprofit experience, but as assistant directors – roles that deal with logistics and scheduling – they were used to figuring things out on the fly.
They got liability insurance, enabling them to fully release companies of any legal responsibility for donating food. Then, as work resumed, they reached out to their contacts to put their idea into action. As industry insiders familiar with production, they knew how to alleviate management's concerns and pick up the food quickly and discretely.
'We speak their language,' Cohen said. 'I always say, 'We don't care about Martin Scorsese, we just care about your mashed potatoes.''
At first, Cohen and Luu made most of the pickups themselves with the help of volunteers. But when they went back to work, that became unmanageable. As a result, they developed their Film Industry Driver Program, which pays a day rate that covers a stipend and gas to employees like production assistants and background actors for their help. For Cohen, this just made sense: The nonprofit gets 'set savvy' professionals to make pickups, and those with the lowest paid positions in the industry earn some extra money.
'It's a way (for them) to find work in between jobs. It's a shifting schedule, so it's hard to find anywhere else to work,' she said. 'To me, it's just this circle: Reduce waste by using the people in Hollywood … (to help) these people who don't have food.'
While Cohen and Luu still make pickups occasionally, most of their time is now spent coordinating logistics. All drivers are trained and given safety vests equipped with an alarm, along with a sign for their vehicle. Food is transported in thermal bags that keep it at a safe temperature.
For Stephen Faust, an executive chef who has worked in on-set catering for more than 20 years, the group provides an easy solution to a problem that always bothered him.
'For decades, it broke my heart to throw food away, so we're happy to do it,' Faust said. 'It's just like clockwork. They show up, we pass off the food, and we're all set.'
The group picks up meals 24 hours a day, seven days a week from five to 10 locations per day, covering an estimated 90-mile radius in Los Angeles. The food is distributed to shelters, food pantries, nonprofits, community fridges, and homeless encampments.
When the writer's strike in 2023 brought production to a stop once again, Cohen and Luu pivoted and built connections with grocery stores, companies, and other venues.
'I'm a high stakes problem solver,' Cohen said. 'In this business, you often hit a roadblock and have to figure out a new plan, so we just approach every day that way.'
While their services are free, they strongly encourage locations to make a $50 donation per pickup to help pay the drivers and offset the cost of gas. After working on this effort for nearly four years without pay, much of that time juggling their industry jobs, Cohen and Luu now do this work full-time, earning small part-time salaries.
While Cohen isn't sure she's done with working in the film industry, for now her focus is on Every Day Action: connecting the dots – one set, one meal, one person at a time.
'I feel like my skillset is called to do this,' she said. 'Now more than ever, we have to help each other.'

Biblioracle: Marcy Dermansky puts ordinary people in almost absurd situations in ‘Hot Air'
It is hard to describe the wonderfully disorienting sensation of entering a Marcy Dermansky novel. Having read all six of her novels, I'm well-positioned to try to illuminate the experience. 'Hot Air,' her latest offering, is an excellent example of the Dermansky method, where you start with an ordinary person in an ordinary situation before injecting some destabilizing element that is almost, but not quite, absurd. After which the character engages in a series of actions that are, objectively, a pretty bad idea, but in the context of the world Dermansky has conjured, both logical and surprising. Yeah, I don't know how someone pulls this off either, but if you've done it six times, clearly it isn't a fluke. (I've previously written about her 'Bad Marie,' 'Very Nice' and 'The Red Car.') 'Hot Air' starts with Joannie, a divorced single mom living in a substandard but affordable apartment with her young daughter, Lucy, in the waning days of the most acute period of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is mostly fried. A writer who published a successful/award-winning book years earlier, she's never managed to deliver a follow-up. She's also given up on Lucy's pandemic schooling and is wondering if her daughter will fail the third grade. But Joannie has a date with Johnny, a fellow parent, her first date in seven years. Lucy and Johnny's son, Tyson, are having a playdate in the basement while Johnny moves to kiss Joannie outside by his very nice pool. Just as Joannie is trying to extricate herself from a kiss she is not enjoying, a hot air balloon crashes into Johnny's pool. Acting on instinct and eager to disengage from the kiss, Joannie dives into the pool to rescue one of the two balloon passengers. On the surface, Joannie realizes she has rescued Jonathan Foster, her first kiss at camp when she was 14 years old, who has grown up to be a billionaire. He was trying to save a failing marriage to Julia via the gallant adventure of piloting a hot air balloon on their wedding anniversary. Most of that background is revealed in the first chapter. What unfolds from there are the strange, but logical, and also surprising events of the rest of the novel. To summarize too many of those events would be to infringe on one of the pleasures of a Marcy Dermansky novel, to see a character make a choice where you think, 'Why would he/she do that? it's so dumb,' and then being captivated by what results. I can say that the couples decide to engage in a sleepover at Johnny's house, which manages to entangle the foursome in ways that cannot be immediately unraveled. The entire action of the novel spans only a few days, and yet much of consequence happens. Julia and Jonathan have been unmoored by failed attempts at having a child and the distortions of becoming obscenely wealthy. Joannie wonders if Lucy is the only thing that will give her meaning for the rest of her life. As off-balance as Dermansky's plots will keep you, what I find most compelling is the way she maps the small moments in which characters have close encounters with their deepest selves as they interrogate and then express (or fail to express) their desires. While Joannie is the center of the novel, chapters are also told from Johnny, Jonathan, Julia, and Lucy's points of view, in addition to Vivian, Jonathan's assistant. The humor is dry as a bone to the point where if I summarized it out of context, you'd say it isn't funny, but this is just part of the magic. If you connect with one Marcy Dermansky novel, you've got more pleasurable reading in front of you. ‘The Unrestricted War' to Premiere Online Exclusively on Gan Jing World
An edge-of-your-seat political thriller inspired by true events during the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, 'The Unrestricted War,' premieres on Aug. 8, exclusively on GJW+, the streaming platform hosted by Gan Jing World. ' The Unrestricted War, ' directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Yan Ma, will stream at 9 p.m. ET and includes a live watch party. After the film, viewers can join an interactive Q&A with the director and the film's lead actress, Uni Park. The film tells the story of Dr. Jim Conrad, a prominent Canadian virologist working in Beijing on a biotech initiative. His work takes a dark turn when he and his wife, Sophie, are detained without warning by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) secret police. With their young daughter still in China and their lives in peril, Jim is issued a chilling ultimatum: steal a classified viral sample from a high-security laboratory, or disappear forever. 'This is an absolutely stunning film. Stunning both because of the technical quality of it and the performance, and the story. It is hard to overstate the importance of it at this moment, because we are at war with the Chinese Communist Party,' Frank Gaffney, president of the Institute for the American Future, said at 'The Unrestricted War' premiere screening and panel discussion event on Capitol Hill on July 31. The film's title refers to a real-life Chinese military strategy meant to destabilize enemy societies without firing a shot, called unrestricted warfare. Unlike conventional warfare, this strategy aims to weaken enemy societies by blending into everyday life through infiltration, technology, information warfare, and media manipulation. The production of this political thriller was a risk in itself, said filmmakers. Director Yan Ma faced intense pressure from CCP authorities: He was harassed by agents, a relative's income was cut off, and one actor dropped out just days before filming due to threats by CCP operatives in Canada. The film's original Canadian premiere was canceled just 24 hours before the scheduled screening, another move Ma attributes to external interference. 'Making this film took not just talent and hard work, but courage. As a Chinese Canadian filmmaker, I've seen firsthand the risks involved in telling stories like this,' Ma told The Epoch Times. 'Our team never backed down, because we knew it was a story that demanded to be told. This film doesn't offer all the answers, but it opens a window to a reality we can't afford to ignore.' The film, banned in China, is being released exclusively on GJW+, a platform dedicated to spotlighting human rights, traditional values, and honest storytelling. "The Office" Fans React To "The Paper" Trailer
If you haven't watched at least one episode of The Office (yes, the US version), then babe — hate to break it to you — but you've probably been living under a rock. Everyone and their dog has seen at least a few episodes. Most of us? We've binged the whole series one, two, maybe twelve times. It's basically in our DNA at this point. We're the generation that knows weirdly specific facts about paper — reams, weights, sizes — all thanks to Dunder Mifflin. The show's so iconic, it feels untouchable. You'd have to be bold (or foolish) to even try. But if you haven't heard... So when Peacock announced The Paper — a new spin-off set in the same universe as The Office with a similar vibe — will be premiering on September 4, naturally, the internet had thoughts. What we know so far Gleeson (About Time, Ex Machina, Fountain of Youth) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) are set to star. Oh, and yes, Oscar Martinez (played by Óscar Núñez) is coming back. Sure, we all wanted Michael, but let's be honest — they didn't even let him finish The Office. Still, never say maybe we'll get a surprise cameo from Jim and Pam. According to the internet, the same documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin found a new subject — but this time, they're turning the cameras on a dying Midwestern newspaper trying to stage a comeback with volunteer reporters. But nope, it's not in Scranton this time. It's in Toledo, Ohio. We've known about the spinoff since July 10, but as of last night, Peacock finally dropped the trailer for The Paper — and the internet is deep in speculation mode. As a self-proclaimed Office expert, part of me wants to dismiss it completely. Why mess with perfection? But as someone whose favourite movie is About Time, and who loves Domhnall Gleeson, I also just want to support the man's career. I'm torn — and clearly, so is the internet.
