Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ulsan HD 1-0 in their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup at the Inter & Co Stadium on Tuesday.

Rayners also had a goal disallowed due to offside against the Korean Republic outfit. The game was delayed by over an hour due to adverse weather conditions in Orlando, Florida.
Sundowns started the brighter of the two teams by controlling possession and creating a few chances early in the game. Club captain Themba Zwane was given a rare start after missing out on last month's CAF Champions League final defeat to Pyramids FC of Egypt.
Rayners' pace caused the Ulsan defence all sorts of problems and he thought he had given Sundowns the lead in the 31st minute but VAR intervened as he was in an offside position.
The 29-year-old was not to be denied three minutes later after finding himself through on goal following a great pass by Lucas Ribeiro. Rayners controlled the ball before putting it past the onrushing Ulsan goalkeeper Hyeon-woo Jo and into the bottom corner.
Ulsan took the game to Sundowns in the second half but the South African champions defended well and held on for all three points. It was a perfect start for Downs who have now taken a massive step towards securing a place in the last 16 of the global showpiece.
The Brazilians could have also closed off the game after a couple of good breakaway situations but they were not clinical in front of goal. In the end, Rayners' goal proved to be the difference in the hard-fought encounter.

The result means that the Betway Premiership champions are at the top of Group F with three points after Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense played to a goalless draw in an earlier kick off.
Masandawana will next take on German giants Dortmund on Saturday in a match that will be played at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati.

Orlando Pirates transfer list: Four out, more stars to go
Orlando Pirates are yet to make any official announcement on which players they will be signing for the new season. However, they have already announced four departures, including some surprising ones as part of their clearout. Miguel Timm was the first to go after three successful years with them. He's already reported to be on his way to Sekhukhune United. Pirates would then bid farewell to captain Innocent Maela who will be taking a non-playing role within the club. In what sent shockwaves around the country, Pirates later parted ways with Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. Both players are already linked with big moves to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs although nothing is official as yet. Paseka Mako has already said his goodbyes to Orlando Pirates fans. OPINION: Proteas have not discarded dreaded chokers tag yet
A World Cup win is needed for the Proteas to bury the chokers tag that has followed them for decades. Kyle Verreynne of South Africa celebrates with the trophy after the Proteas won the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on 14 June 2025. Picture: Paul Harding/Gallo Images Before you read this column, I need to put a disclaimer: this piece contains an opinion that is likely to be unpopular. So, let's get to it. The Proteas have been celebrated for winning the ICC Test final against Australia, and rightly so. The hard-fought victory against the Aussies was built on courage, determination and talent. Aiden Markram arguably played the best innings of his career. Temba Bavuma bravely continued batting, despite his injury, and proved many doubters wrong. Kagiso Rabada also had a point to prove and showed why he's a once-in-a-generation talent. ALSO READ: Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has silenced his critics This win will instil belief in the squad. That Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham — relatively inexperienced players on the international stage — were in the middle when the winning runs were scored is another plus. However, claims that the Proteas have banished their 'chokers' tag are, at best, optimistic. Yes, the Test Championship is an ICC event. Yes, the final was a do-or-die match. And yes, the South African team played against formidable opposition in tough conditions. But I don't think the pressure in the Test at Lord's can be compared to the pressure the team will face at the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. In that environment, the matches come thick and fast, and — as we've seen many times before — good performances can be undone by one moment of madness. In these limited-overs tournaments, mistakes are amplified. And that is when doubts can start creeping in. ALSO READ: 'Dreams do come true': Proteas on top of the world Another reason the chokers tag can't be discarded yet is that the Proteas were not favourites to beat Australia last week. Also, this is not the first time the Proteas have won a Test Championship. The only difference on this occasion is that the South African players had to win a once-off match to secure the shiny mace. South Africa will always have talented cricketers and be among the favourites at any ICC tournament — but the chokers tag will continue to rear its ugly head until the team wins a World Cup. I, like every other Proteas fan, would love to see them win a World Cup. Hopefully, it will happen soon, so the dreaded chokers tag can be buried once and for all. Kaizer Chiefs fans plead for Mama Joy and Saleng
The comments sections on this publication rarely disappoint. Kaizer Chiefs fans want Mamy Joy and Monnapule Saleng at Naturena. Infamous public figure Mama Jot leads a life most sports fanatics in South Africa can only dream of. Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng is still unsure where he will be playing his football next season. After Pirates hesitated to sell Monnapule Saleng, and with all possible suitors knowing he's unhappy at the club, that will certainly drive his price down. Pirates' bargaining position is significantly weakened. The player's reluctance to stay is a big issue, but that doesn't mean they can't get a good sum for the 26-year-old. The record departure in Pirates history was €2.3 million (R44 million) when Mbulelo 'Oldjohn' Mabizela moved to Tottenham in 2003-2004. It's unlikely the Sea Robbers can fetch a number in that region, but there's no reason why the 2022-2023 PSL Player of the Year shouldn't command a decent fee. The talk of the town. Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Nobody has ever questioned the loyalty of Kaizer Chiefs fans. Just look at the continuous disappointments they have to face and they just keep getting back up off the ground. Could Mama Joy become the latest Chiefs 'Super Fan' to keep morale in the stadium up? Should Chiefs make a proposal to sign Saleng? Let us know by leaving a comment below, or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
