VUONG: Not one more tax dollar to TIFF until they find their moral compass
On Aug. 12, Hollywood news site Deadline broke the news that TIFF uninvited Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich from screening his documentary, The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue.
This heroic story, which was first covered by 60 Minutes, is one that should inspire anyone who cares about family, duty, and the triumph of good over evil. It follows retired soldier and Israeli veteran Noam Tibon who set out to rescue his two granddaughters on Oct. 7, 2023 and saved, along the way, survivors of the Nova music festival massacre and helped wounded soldiers.
In response to Deadline, a TIFF spokesperson claimed 'conditions that were requested when the film was initially invited, were not met, including legal clearance of all footage.'
Sorry, whose clearance? The film includes self-recorded footage from designated terror group Hamas, is that who TIFF is worried about? Terrorists?
Never mind the fact that the footage should fall under 'fair dealing' or that it has already been used in other films and art installations, including the Nova exhibition that just wrapped up in Toronto in June. Does TIFF recognize who they are siding with?
Hamas has been on Canada's terror list since 2002 and, on Oct. 7, 2023, they murdered over 1,200 innocent people, including eight Canadians.
Following the justified Canadian and international outrage, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey issued a statement on Aug. 13 to try and shift the narrative with a new story regarding alleged 'claims that the film was rejected due to censorship are unequivocally false.' This is called a Red Herring. 'Sure the economy is bad, but the real issue is crime (please stop talking about our economic record)!'
Contrast this with TIFF's response last year following their announcement on Sept. 10, 2024 to screen Russian propaganda film, Russians at War, that was protested by Ukrainian Canadians for whitewashing their soldiers' actions in Ukraine:
Sept. 11 — TIFF released a statement defending the film and affirming their commitment to artistic expression and free speech
Sept. 12 — TIFF pauses screenings of the film
Sept. 17 — TIFF resumes screenings of Russians at War and is shown outside of the official festival dates to accommodate for the pause
One can't help but notice the stark difference in how TIFF conducted itself in response to these two films. They stood up for one and found a way to screen it, even going outside of last year's festival dates, and cut another on not only the flimsiest of reasons but also the most morally repugnant.
So what is the real reason for TIFF uninviting a Canadian filmmaker from screening his documentary about an Israeli grandfather saving his family and rescuing countless other innocent civilians? Is it inherent antisemitism within their ranks as some people have alleged? If they're worried about safety, bowing to the hateful mob all but guarantees disruptions.
If this is a matter of art and freedom of expression, then the consistent response would have been for TIFF to defend and screen both films.

If not, just what are our tax dollars, from all levels of government, funding? If it's not art and it is not supporting Canadian filmmakers like Barry Avrich, then what is the return on investment? As of right now, the ROI is trending negative with TIFF's actions being mocked on the New York Post's Aug. 14 front-page cover.
They have caused Toronto and Canada immeasurable reputational damage as its decision appearing to side with a designated terrorist group is ridiculed around the world.
Until TIFF finds their moral compass again or, at a bare minimum, can provide films centered on democracies with the same treatment as they do those from authoritarian regimes, not a single taxpayer dollar should fund the festival.

Gas prices: Slipping oil prices fuel summer savings at Canadian pumps
Canada's gas price average fell 2.7 cents per litre over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. The move lower is largely thanks to falling crude prices in response to fears of an oversupplied market. The biggest discount this week was in Calgary, where the price of a litre of regular gasoline dropped 10.6 cents between August 7 and August 15. At this time last year, Canada's gas price average was $1.678 per litre, compared to $1.452 as of Thursday. "As it stands today, there is a glut of crude oil on the market that is keeping prices down," En-Pro International chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight wrote in a blog post on Thursday. Earlier this week, a report from the International Energy Agency found global supply could outpace demand by a record 2.96 million barrels per day in 2026, surpassing the buildup during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. At the same time, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration released on Wednesday showed American stockpiles are at the highest level in two months. Benchmark oil prices drifted lower on Friday as investors await news from U.S. President Donald Trump's summit in Alaska with Russia's Vladimir Putin. Progress towards a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine would help de-risk the global oil market and support prices. Trump recently increased U.S. tariffs on Indian goods in response to the country's purchases of Russian oil. So far, he has avoided targeting China over its Russian oil purchases. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Rumor Teases a Major Role For Hulk and He Will Get "Angry" Again — GeekTyrant
Spider-Man: Brand New Day just got a whole lot more intense with a new rumor suggesting that Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is not only coming back, but possibly in his most rage-filled form yet… the return of 'Savage' Hulk. We've known for awhile now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could throw The Hulk into the chaos, and now it's being reported that Ruffalo will have a substantial role in the film, not just a quick cameo. Banner's presence is expected to be pivotal to the plot. According to insiders, "Banner's appearance will be much larger than a cameo, and Ruffalo will have a substantial role in the film." Fans have been busy theorizing about how Hulk fits into the story. With Jon Bernthal already confirmed to return as Frank Castle/The Punisher, speculation is running wild that we might finally see the Smart Hulk persona step aside. Instead, we could get a brutal reawakening of the raging, destructive version of Hulk we haven't seen in years. Scooper MTTSH added more fuel to the fire, saying that we will 'finally get Angry Hulk back' in the movie. That doesn't necessarily mean we're getting a mindless, smashing machine, but it does strongly hint at the return of the more dangerous, less-controlled side of the character. Whether this is a temporary transformation or something that builds toward the rumored World War Hulk project is anyone's guess, but either way it sounds like things are going to get explosive with the character. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day centers on Tom Holland's Peter Parker, the addition of Hulk, and possibly a showdown between the two, is more than enough to get fans hyped. Throw in Michael Mando as Mac Gargan aka The Scorpion , Liza Colón-Zayas and Sadie Sink, in a mystery roles, and returning characters MJ and Ned played by Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, and the film is shaping up to be packed with interesting characters. There's also ongoing speculation about new characters from the Brand New Day comic arc, like Carlie Cooper or Lily Hollister (aka Menace), possibly making their debut. Production has officially kicked off. Holland recently shared some behind-the-scenes excitement: "It's day one — my fourth-ever day one on Spider-Man. You know, it's funny. Putting the suit on, it feels different this time, somehow. 'It's also the first time we've ever had fans on set for day one, so it's really exciting to share this with them. We've got some familiar faces on set. You know, I'm just going to do my best, hopefully get it right. No pressure." Marvel Studios will release Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters on July 31, 2026.

Then & Now: Keri Hilson Reflects On Mid-2000s Reign And Long-Awaited Comeback
Keri Hilson may have spent 15 years out of the spotlight, but that doesn't diminish her musical legacy. However, we can't fully understand how we got to her grand return after all this time without looking back at her reign and realizing how Hilson grew to such prominence before backing away from the limelight. It all began with her 2009 debut single, 'Energy,' which served as the lead single from her debut album, In A Perfect World…. 'That was the song that they chose to come first,' she explained. Though never specifically naming who made the choice, the visual for the critically acclaimed record was directed by Melina Matsoukas. It was the video that stood out most. 'Halle Berry was our inspiration for the boxing scene stuff and some of the fashion choices […] I think we nailed it.' Despite that moment being more of a blur, the most vivid memories Hilson has from her early days stem from her time working with Kanye West. 'I had Kanye as my leading man in the 'Make Love' video. It was just a teaser […] He walked up to me during filming and at some point off-screen, but he said, 'So how's your album going?' Just two artists talking. And I say, 'It's going great, but the only thing missing is you,'' she recalled. Admittedly, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter felt she was 'on a cliff for a good four seconds'— since she assumed he'd decline her proposition. Much to her surprise, West replied, 'Well, why can't I be on it? What's the issue? I'll do a verse. I'd love to.' The downside to his immediate yes was that her album was being mastered at the same time, but they stopped for Ye. 'I didn't know if [he] was really going to come back to do the verse,' Hilson confessed, but sure enough, he showed up. Initially, she thought he'd throw a verse onto 'Alienated,' but he ended up making 'an incredibly long verse on 'Knock You Down.'' Hilson admitted, 'We had to chop it up, and he was pissed. He was pissed. Because the song can't be five minutes long, you know what I mean?' The current version of the Grammy-nominated single is five minutes and twenty-six seconds. Nonetheless, she did tease that she may release the full version now. 'I probably could. I probably should. I break rules now,' she quipped before praising Ye's genius. 'Kanye is a brilliant, brilliant artist. He's a brilliant musician. He's good at what he does. What I like about brilliance is that you're unafraid […] and genius comes with a certain…confidence.' Hilson noted that at the beginning of her career, there was 'a lot going on' and 'it was nonstop.' She gleefully reminisced on how 'Pretty Girl Rock' was 'almost entirely' Ne-Yo's 'brainchild,' how she somewhat freestyled 'Slow Dance'— later likening it to Prince's 'Adore' — and how the magic of 'Superhuman' came to be. Piecing together classics like those as well as 'Tell Him The Truth,' Fabolous' 'Everything, Everyday, Everywhere,' Avant's '4 Minutes,' and Chris Brown's 'Young Love' all led to the making of WE NEED TO TALK. Hilson even admitted that she reunited with Ryan Leslie on the final 'scene' of her album. So, for her, this is all just the start of a new reign, but this time as a veteran. The first installment, LOVE, is out now, but even after REDEMPTION and DRAMA are out, Hilson hinted that she has 'several albums worth of music right now.'
