Mystery as human body is found in medieval cave at beauty spot - as police launch investigation

Daily Mail31-07-2025
Police have launched an investigation after a human body was found in a medieval cave at an Essex beauty spot.
Officers were sent to search deneholes at Hangman's Woods in Grays after receiving a call just after 2.05pm on Tuesday from a person who discovered the corpse.
Essex Police are now working to identify the deceased person and attempting to figure out how they came to be in the deneholes and how they died.
Deneholes are a system of branching chalk caves, entered through vertical shafts, which were used as mines during medieval times.
The deneholes at Hangman's Woods are a Scheduled Monument and regarded as the best preserved set in existence.
They are particularly deep compared to others around the UK, with some shafts tunnelling more than 20m deep before reaching chalk.
Many of the Hangman's Woods deneholes have been infilled, but some remain open.
Fencing is in place around area as it is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for the colony of bats that use it as an underground hibernation hub.
Whilst the public are generally not allowed to access the denehole site, it is possible to request permission from the council.
Detective Inspector Lydia George said: 'Utilising specialist equipment and skills and working with our partners, we recovered a body yesterday [Tuesday].
'Work is underway to establish who they are and the circumstances around how they came to be in the deneholes and how they died.
'I want to thank the community around this area for their support, particularly local businesses who kindly provided refreshments.
'We will provide further information as and when we are able to.'

Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby welcomes a new family member after sparking engagement rumours

Schapelle Corby has taken to social media to announce a new 'family' member. Posting to her stories on Wednesday, the 47-year-old shared a photo in which she could be seen posing alongside a handsome-looking white rooster. 'Meet George,' she captioned the cute selfie. Wearing her long red locks out for the post, Schapelle looked very pleased with her new companion. She also shared another selfie of George in which the chook could be seen posing against bushland. Followers were quick to congratulate Schapelle on the fresh addition to her home. 'Hey George, you're so cute,' messaged one user, while another added a flirty, 'Cute, like its owner.' It comes after the convicted drug smuggler turned influencer was recently seen with a 'mystery man'. Schapelle hugged the male pal as she arrived at Gold Coast airport back in May. Last year, Schapelle left her many fans wondering if she's getting ready to walk down the aisle. Schapelle, who was at the time celebrating her 47th birthday in Paris, set tongues wagging after an eagle-eyed fan spotted a sparkling ring on her left hand. However, it appears not all was what it seems. A close look at the image shows the picture has been 'flipped', and the flashy ring she is sporting is actually on her right hand. A tell-tale give away that the picture has been 'mirrored' is that the Olympic rings seen on the Eiffel Tower in the background of the photo are around the wrong way. In 2020, Schapelle split from her Indonesian boyfriend Ben Panangian after 16 years together. She revealed her long-distance relationship with Ben, 45, was over and that she was looking for her Prince Charming. The couple met in a Bali prison in 2006 when they were both serving time for drug-related offences, but hadn't seen each other in person since 2019. She has not publicly dated anyone since. Schapelle was incarcerated for nine years for attempting to smuggle cannabis into Indonesia. She was arrested at Bali airport in October 2004 with 4.2kg of cannabis wrapped in plastic inside her boogie board bag. Schapelle has always maintained her innocence and her lawyers argued she had unintentionally become a drug mule, suggesting baggage handlers put the drugs in her bag. She was released in 2014.

Cat shot five times amid rise in air rifle attacks

RSPCA data reveals a 30 per cent increase in air gun attacks on cats in the last year, with 70 incidents reported in 2024. The charity has also noted a surge in other weapon attacks on animals, including pets and farm animals, using catapults and crossbows. These attacks cause horrific pain and suffering, often resulting in severe injuries or death, with rescue cat Ronnie found screaming in pain after being found with five air gun pellets in him. Overall, nearly 500 weapon attacks on animals have been reported to the RSPCA over the past three years, with catapult incidents doubling this year compared to last. The RSPCA has launched its 'Summer Cruelty Appeal' and is supporting 'Operation Lakeshot' to combat these cruel incidents.
