A little-known seaside town has been named the best in the UK despite having no arcades or rides.
Big UK seaside towns with entertainment and piers have always been a favourite for Brits looking for a daytrip to the sea or a staycation. But a new spot has now topped the list of the country's best seaside locations - and this winner isn't one of the big names most travellers go to on a hot day.
Aldeburgh in Suffolk replaces arcades and rides with rows of pastel homes and a wealth of history. It comes after reports of a small fishing village with some of UK's best seafood but hardly any tourists.
The quaint town was once a site where famous ships were built, including Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind, and the area has not forgotten its rich past. It also has links to the Tudor period as Henry VIII himself gave the port town borough status.
History and literature buffs can even enjoy the annual Aldeburgh Festival of music and arts if they want a different type of fun to coin machines and whack-a-mole.
The cute town offers a high street full of clothing boutiques, independent shops and antique stores. Foodies can also enjoy the classic seaside fish and chips while also digging into spots rated by the Michelin Guide. The town's Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop has previously won the title of Britain's best chippie.
Aldeburgh has even been dubbed "London-on-Sea" due to its location between the River Alde and a stretch of English coastline overlooking the North Sea. The main attractions for visitors are the pebble beach, home to colourful 19th-century holiday villas and a historic watchtower.
The town's beach is recognised as one of the top five shingle beaches in the country, winning several national awards including a prestigious Blue Flag. The beach has no kiosks, but there are traditional fisherman's huts across the sand where visitors can buy some freshly-caught seafood.
This sweet town offers a whimsical escape from neighbouring areas and has been named the best seaside spot by The Times, which said: "The East Anglian coast often seems stuck in a bit of a time warp, and if anywhere exemplifies this it's Aldeburgh."
The review added: "Aldeburgh is a vision of the English seaside of yesteryear: wooden shacks and bathing huts, boats pulled up on the shingle, strolls along the prom with ice cream in hand."
Other places on the list included Oban in Scotland, Cromer in Norfolk, Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria and Penzance in Cornwall. Some more well-known seaside towns also made the list including Brighton and Margate.
The train from London to Aldeburgh is quick and frequent, but you can also get there easily by car. The drive from the capital to Aldeburgh via the A12 takes less than three hours.

It also emerged 35 per cent of footy fans have a bucket list of grounds they dream of visiting, with 18 per cent of these having as many as five earmarked to tick off one day. Domestically, Liverpool fans had something else to cheer after winning the Premier League this season, with Anfield ranking fourth — the highest of all English venues. The research was commissioned by OLBG ahead of the new football seasons kicking off across Europe, which also plotted the top 10 grounds into an interactive map for fans. Jake Ashton, football editor for the brand, said: 'Football stadiums are becoming more impressive, and across the globe they offer very different experiences. 'It's great to see the two Spanish giants go head-to-head again, with Barcelona this time pipping Real Madrid to the top spot. 'The variety and pull for fans to travel and see the beautiful game played out in different grounds looks as strong as ever, based on the number of pitches on people's bucket lists. 'With Anfield making the top four, it also shows the UK isn't being left behind when it comes to iconic stadiums in world football.' It's not just Liverpool's home the fans want to visit domestically — Wembley came in sixth, Manchester United's Old Trafford ranked seventh, and their City rivals just six miles away at the Etihad finished ninth. Buffalo Bills' new stadium revealed Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, which opened in 2006 and holds approximately 60,000 supporters, rounded off the top 10. Away from Europe, the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro — home to both CR Flamengo and Fluminense FC and considered a national landmark in Brazil — came in 12th. Staying in South America, La Bombonera — home of the iconic yellow and blue of Boca Juniors in Argentina, and the last club Diego Maradona played for before retirement — came 20th in the table. When asked about the most important factors in creating the world's best footie stadiums, excellent views of the pitch (52 per cent) and comfortable seating (50 per cent) topped the list. Another 46 per cent said it was all about atmosphere and crowd noise. When fans were asked to rank grounds purely on their understanding of matchday atmosphere, Anfield came out on top, followed by the Camp Nou and the Santiago Bernabéu. Half of those respondents attributed the buzz in these arenas to the passion of the home fans, while others cited the quality of football (47 per cent) and near-capacity crowds (45 per cent) as key contributors. More than a third (38 per cent) of supporters polled, via OnePoll, also admitted to backing a team outside the UK, with 85 per cent of those saying it's a dream to one day watch a game at their chosen ground. 'But a ground is nothing, it seems, without the fans who flock there week in, week out. Cotswolds locals react to Vice President JD Vance visit
The vice president of the United States has been labelled "a bit of a mouth" after holidaying with his family in an English country manor this Vance used the break in the peaceful Cotswolds to relax with his family, go fishing with the foreign Secretary and make the trip to RAF Fairford where US Air Force personnel are security that comes with having such a high-profile guest in the manor, plus Mr Vance's outspoken nature, has not gone down well with some residents."He's a bit of a mouth - to put it politely as possible," said Josh Packford. "I think he thought he was going to be a bit more important than he really is," Mr Packford visit has meant a lot of changes to village life with road closures, ID checks and 20-vehicle motorcades Resident Shelley Walsh said while some Americans might be pleased to see him, "I don't think the locals are too happy about the roads being closed." JD Vance has been more outspoken than many other vice presidents since coming to office in February, he was seen to lead an attack on Ukraine's President Volodomyr Zelensky, in an extraordinary meeting in the Oval like this have earned him a reputation that has not endeared him to some in the Cotswolds."A lot of people are not particularly keen on Trump unfortunately," said Danielle Swann."I think because of that a lot of people are going to see the vice president coming here as a bad thing." Not all residents were entirely negative about the visit."It's a shame he hasn't popped in to see us on the market today, he could've got some nice local produce to eat," said James Fallows, a market trader in Bennett added: "He's probably doing a bit of fishing and a bit of golfing while he's here and I'm sure it's a total waste of taxpayers money but we'd make him welcome here as everyone does in the Cotswolds." 'This is a beautiful country' Mr Vance also took the opportunity to meet members of the US military at RAF Fairford - where the United States Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing and the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron are currently the visit, Vance was briefed on the base's capabilities and addressed personnel."I'm pretty jealous, this is a pretty fine duty station," he said to the assembled troops."This is a beautiful country - I've had some downtime with the family and we've had a very good time here in England - the United Kingdom is of course one of our great allies," he added."We are proud of the special relationship and we are proud to work together with our British friends right here at Fairford."Mr Vance is expected to continue his holiday with a trip to Scotland.
