Kate quietly holds A-list meeting after abruptly pulling out of Royal Ascot
Kate has made a quiet return to work with a very A-list meeting after cancelling her appearance at Royal Ascot.
Royal-watchers were left disappointed earlier this week after it emerged that she'd had to cancel her scheduled appearance in the royal carriage procession alongside the King, Queen and Prince William at the iconic raceground, after also missing it last year due to her cancer treatment.
Just days later, it's now emerged that Kate, 43, has privately resumed work duties, meeting with philanthropist Melinda Gates, the ex-wife of Microsoft founder and billionaire, Bill Gates, at Windsor Castle.

According to the Court Circular, which records royal engagements, she was joined by William for the June 25 meeting.
The exact details of their discussion have not been disclosed, but according to Hello magazine, the Prince and Princess of Wales 'represented their Royal Foundation at the meeting, which focuses on areas including the early years and mental health'.
Despite being on a positive trajectory since announcing her gradual return to public duties following the completion of her chemotherapy, there were concerns on Wednesday when Kate pulled out of the racing event at the last minute.

However, a short time later it was confirmed by Kensington Palace that Kate would not be attending, with local media reporting she was 'disappointed' but was having to 'find the right balance as she fully returns to public facing engagements'.
Despite pulling out of Ascot, Kate still had plenty of high-profile appearances last week, including Trooping the Colour and the Order of the Garter ceremony.

It's also understood she'll take part in events associated with the French President and First Lady's state visit to the UK early next month.
Back in January, she revealed she was in remission from cancer, which she had first publicly disclosed last March.
Last September, she released an emotional video message, featuring personal footage of herself with William and their three children, opening up about the challenges they'd all been privately battling – but also proudly announced she had completed her treatment.

‘Horrific': New book exposes claim about Prince Andrew's daughters Beatrice and Eugenie
Don't miss out on the headlines from Royals. Followed categories will be added to My News. Prince Andrew's daughters are thought to be garnering sympathy from friends after becoming collateral damage in a new book about the ousted royal and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. A new book by royal biographer Andrew Lownie, titled The Rise and Fall of the House of York, has revealed some embarrassing titbits about life within the family who have been stricken by controversy for decades. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie with Prince Edward's wife, Sophie. Picture: AFP. In the book, the author claims that the disgraced Duke of York forced his and Ferguson's daughters into official trips and business deals in the Middle East. These trips eventually led to aiding both Beatrice and Eugenie in kickstarting their own careers as the pair are not working royals and so therefore expected to make their own money. Beatrice has an AI business while her sister, Eugenie, 35, is a director at art gallery Hauser and Wirth. 'All they have ever done is stand by their parents in the most horrific public circumstances,' a source close to the Princesses told The Daily Beast's Tom Sykes. 'I don't think it's fair to criticise them for (their parents),' said the source. 'They're sweet girls who understand that they are immensely privileged, and have always been grateful for the privilege they've had, and have tried to use it to do the right thing.' The insider added that the monarchy doesn't support either of the sisters outside of supplying them both with homes inside the palace, which are paid for by King Charles. 'They were told to get jobs by the firm and they did that, so it seems unfair to attack them for making money,' the source added. The Duke of York walks with his daughter Princess Beatrice. Author Andrew Lownie's new book 'Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York', details the private and intimate life of Prince Andrew. In a new book, bombshell claims ... more Elsewhere in the book, it's alleged that Prince Andrew lost his virginity aged just 11. The book attempts to uncover when Andrew became 'obsessed with women', pinpointing it back to his premature sexual experiences. According to a chapter titled 'Randy Andy', the prince had his first sexual experience aged just 8. A source said, 'He admitted that his second sexual experience came before he turned 12 and when he was 13 he had already slept with more than half-a-dozen girls.' Another unnamed source who knows the prince added to The Telegraph they were, indeed, aware of Andrew's 'sexual experiences at what most of us would consider as too young an age.' 'The Duke's personal story is far more complex than people realise or have ever been prepared to properly consider,' the source went on. Lownie wrote of his decision to include the unsavoury claim in his book, arguing, 'It seemed to me it was part of building a picture of behaviour, and how it shaped his life. 'It does perhaps explain some of the behaviour later on. 'I think he [Andrew], in some ways, has been a victim. It does make him much more sympathetic, in a way.' Italian Brainrot: the AI memes only kids know
In a Japanese shop selling pocket-money trinkets, there is a rack of toys, stickers and keyrings based on a global crew of AI-generated characters that almost every child knows about -- and very few adults. A walking shark in oversized sneakers, an orange with muscular arms and a twirling "Ballerina Cappuccina" with a mug for a head are among the strange stars of the online phenomenon called Italian Brainrot. "At first it's not funny at all, but it kind of grows on you," 16-year-old Yoshi Yamanaka-Nebesney from New York told AFP. "You might use it to annoy someone and find that funny." The name nods to the stupefying effect of scrolling through mindless social media posts, especially over-the-top images created with artificial intelligence tools. Shouty, crude and often nonsensical Italian voiceovers feature in many of the clips made by people in various countries that began to spread this year on platforms such as TikTok, embraced by young Gen Z and Gen Alpha members. The dozen-plus cartoonish AI creatures have fast become memes, inspiring a stream of new content such as "Brainrot Rap", viewed 116 million times on YouTube. A YouTube Short titled "Learn to Draw 5 Crazy Italian Brainrot Animals" -- including a cactus-elephant crossover named "Lirili Larila" -- has also been watched 320 million times. "There's a whole bunch of phrases that all these characters have," said Yamanaka-Nebesney, in Tokyo with his mother Chinami, who had no idea what he was talking about. School-age Italian Brainrot fans can be found from Kenya to Spain and South Korea, while some of the most popular videos reference Indonesia's language and culture instead. "I went on trips with my boys to Mexico" and people would "crack jokes about it" there too, Yamanaka-Nebesney said. - 'Melodic language' - Internet trends move fast, and Italian Brainrot "hit its peak maybe two months ago or a month ago", said Idil Galip, a University of Amsterdam lecturer in new media and digital culture. Italian -- a "melodic language that has opportunities for jokes" -- has appeared in other memes before. And "there are just so many people in Indonesia" sharing posts which have potential for global reach, Galip said. A "multi-level marketing economy" has even emerged, with AI video-makers targeting Italian Brainrot's huge audience through online ads or merchandise sales, she added. Nurina, a 41-year-old Indonesian NGO worker, said her seven-year-old loves the mashed-up brainrot world. "Sometimes when I pick him up from school, or when I'm working from home, he shouts, 'Mommy! Bombardino Crocodilo!'" -- a bomber plane character with a crocodile head. "I know it's fun to watch," said Nurina, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. "I just need to make him understand that this is not real." Some videos have been criticised for containing offensive messages that go over young viewers' heads, such as rambling references in Italian to "Bombardino Crocodilo" bombing children in Gaza. "The problem is that these characters are put into adult content" and "many parents are not tech-savvy" enough to spot the dangers, warned Oriza Sativa, a Jakarta-based clinical psychologist. - Tung Tung Tung Sahur - The best-known Indonesian brainrot character "Tung Tung Tung Sahur" resembles a long drum called a kentongan, which is used to wake people up for a pre-dawn meal, or sahur, during Ramadan. Indonesia has a young, digitally active population of around 280 million, and "Tung Tung Tung Sahur" is not its only viral export. This summer, video footage -- not AI-generated -- of a sunglass-wearing boy dancing on a rowboat during a race at a western Indonesian festival also became an internet sensation. Noxa, the TikToker behind the original "Tung Tung Tung Sahur" clip, is now represented by a Paris-based collective of artists, lawyers and researchers called Mementum Lab. "Noxa is a content creator based in Indonesia. He's under 20," they told AFP. "He makes fast, overstimulated, AI-assisted videos." "He doesn't call himself a 'contemporary artist', but we think he's already acting like one," said Mementum Lab, which is focused on complex emerging issues around AI intellectual property, and says it is helping Noxa negotiate deals for his work. Noxa, in comments provided by the collective, said the character was "inspired by the sound of the sahur drum I used to hear". "I didn't want my character to be just another passing joke -- I wanted him to have meaning," he said. Cultural nuances can be lost at a mass scale, however, with one 12-year-old tourist in Tokyo saying he thought "Tung Tung Tung Sahur" was a baseball bat. And the generation gap looks set to persist. "What's that?!" laughed a woman as she puzzled at the row of Italian Brainrot dolls.

Hairless ‘gentle soul' Petunia claims World's Ugliest Dog Contest title
Washington: She does not stand in triumph. She does not strut. Instead, Petunia rides in someone's arms, her small, hairless body balanced against a loop of pink leash. Fairground trophies shine behind her, but she looks away, folds of skin settling like soft hills along her neck. Petunia, a two-year-old hairless English-French bulldog mix from Eugene, Oregon, arrived at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California, not as a polished show dog but as herself. The World's Ugliest Dog Contest, a decades-old tradition meant to promote the adoption of dogs and remind people that 'pedigree does not define the pet', has never sought perfection. In this competition, the missing fur, the misaligned teeth, the eyes that wander in different directions – they are not flaws, but badges of honour. Petunia was one of 10 contestants that sought to join the reign of oddity champions from the past. In 2024, there was Wild Thang, remembered for a pink tongue forever lolling and glittering eyes set in a tiny head beneath a frizzed crown of brown-and-white fur. In 2023, there was Scooter, a glossy black jelly bean of a dog with a shock of mohawk-like hair. And in 2022, there was Mr Happy Face, a Chihuahua mix likened to a hyena, a mandrill baboon, or perhaps a gorilla in miniature.
