Jamal Adams embracing move to weakside linebacker
'He straight up told me, 'You're going to be in the linebacker room, so get over it,'' Adams said with a laugh, via Levi Edwards of the team website. 'So I was just like, 'Alright, shit, let's do it.''
Adams had never been a full-time linebacker, not even in Pop Warner, before joining the Raiders. The transition hasn't been a problem.
'Obviously I'm just a football player, man,' Adams said. 'See ball, get ball.'
Adams is listed as the backup weakside linebacker to Germaine Pratt, so he is fighting for not only a roster spot but playing time. He played 15 snaps in the preseason opener against the Seahawks.
'He's always been so instinctive and so aggressive and such a run-through guy, been a fantastic blitzer over his time,' Carroll said. 'So, I want to put him in position to do that. He's jumped right into the WILL spot, and that gives us some flexibility that we're going to grow with. He looks really good.'
Adams has played only 15 games the past three seasons, missing time with a torn labrum, torn quad tendon and a hip injury.

Keenan Allen returns to Chargers, feeling at home in new facility
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Keenan Allen walked into Los Angeles Charges training camp on Thursday feeling at home, despite a head coach and training facility that were new to him. The six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver got to work two days after signing with the team that drafted him in 2013 after spending last season with the Chicago Bears. 'This is amazing,' he said, gesturing at The Bolt, the team's year-old facility. 'Just happy to be back. This is where I'm supposed to be.' Although Allen said his year in Chicago 'was all love,' he still kept on eye on the Chargers under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. 'This is more close to home, my family, what I'm used to,' he said. 'The organization, people around the building. Just feel like I'm home.' The Chargers traded Allen to the Bears last offseason for a fourth-round draft pick in a move he believes 'could have been prevented at some point.' He had 70 catches for 744 yards and seven TDs in Chicago. In the free agent market, Allen said he 'got a little downplayed' and that is motivating him. 'I still want to play, still got a little hunger, a chip on my shoulder,' he said. Entering his 13th season, Allen is the second-most experienced player on the roster behind long snapper Josh Harris with 14 years. Allen joins a wide receiver corps that is different than in recent years. Ladd McConkey returns for his second season after breaking Allen's single-season rookie record for catches and yards. 'That was great,' Allen said, before adding with a smile, 'He had a little bit more games.' Allen sees himself fitting in well with McConkey. 'You got two guys who know how to play football and love to play football. I think you can put us anywhere,' he said. 'Last year, he showed he can do it all too. The Chargers also have Quentin Johnston, Tyler Conklin and rookies Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith after free agent Mike Williams suddenly retired before the start of training camp. 'The young guys are much better than what I'm used to seeing in training camp this early,' Allen said. 'Their technique, the way they're getting down field, the way they're pressing coverage I think is great.' Allen talks to Williams and said there's 'zero chance' he would unretire. Second-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter met Allen for the first time before practice. 'Man, it was awesome. So much respect for Keenan, glad we got him back,' he said. 'It's just another weapon that you can tell has a lot of familiarity and comfort with the quarterback. I'm excited to see what he brings to that side of the ball.' Quarterback Justin Herbert made Allen his favorite target in their previous time together, with the 33-year-old wide receiver catching 24 TD passes. 'You got to put the work in. I'm not in football shape. They threw me right in the fire, put the pads on,' Allen said. 'You got to get in there and do it at some point so might as well go out the first day. The Raiders went up to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. It was a homecoming for Geno Smith and Pete Carroll, who both spent years in Seattle and returned for the first time as Raiders. In the opener, the Raiders overcome a slow start to end up escaping with a tie. Of course, wins and losses don't matter in the preseason, so games are allowed to end in ties. Overall, the vibes are pretty good in Las Vegas right now. With a new coaching staff and several new playmakers, it's not surprising that many are expecting a big jump from the team in 2025. However, even with the positive vibes, Jared Dubin of CBS Sports believes the defensive backs are the biggest problem area the Raiders are facing in 2025. The Raiders lost Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, Tre'von Moehrig, and Jakorian Bennett from the group this offseason, and added Jeremy Chinn, Eric Stokes, and rookie Darien Porter. It's entirely possible this group is better in 2025, but it's far from a guarantee. Dubin offered the following regarding the room: The Raiders are starting a ton of new defensive backs this year. Gone are guys like Nate Hobbs and Tre'von Moehrig and Jack Jones and Jakorian Bennett. Newly arrived are Jeremy Chinn and Eric Stokes and third-round pick Darien Porter. We know that Pete Carroll can coach up defensive backs, but we also know it didn't look all that pretty on the back end down the stretch of his time with the Seahawks. With a ton of turnover and not much in the way of elite talent, the back end is a big question mark here. As Dubin mentioned, there's been a ton of turnover in the room, and there's no guarantee this will improve things. Currently, Porter, Stokes, and Darnay Holmes are penciled in to start at the corner spots, with Isaiah Pola-Mao and Chinn starting at the safety spots. One of the standout performers from the preseason opener, Kyu Blu Kelly could end up factoring in as well. There's just too many unknowns to feel confident about this secondary. The quarterback position was the biggest challenge last year, but that should be solidified with the reliable veteran Smith. Porter could be the biggest X-factor for this unit. If the rookie earns the starter role immediately and becomes a reliable cover corner, the team could be in good shape. If Porter struggles though, it could be a long season for this pass defense.
