Trump said on Friday the UAE and the US had agreed to create a path for Emirates to buy some of the most advanced AI semiconductors from US companies, a major win for Abu Dhabi's efforts to become a global AI hub.
The US leader pledged on Thursday to strengthen US ties with the UAE, announcing deals totalling over $200 billion, including a $14.5 billion commitment from Etihad Airways to invest in 28 American-made Boeing aircraft.
Trump earlier visited the Abrahamic Family House after addressing business leaders at a UAE-US business council roundtable at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi.

President Sheikh Mohamed meets Vladimir Putin on official visit to Russia

President Sheikh Mohamed on Thursday met Russian President Vladimir Putin during an official visit to Moscow. A reception ceremony was held at Vnukovo Airport, during which the UAE and Russian national anthems were played and a guard of honour was formed. Sheikh Mohamed was later pictured meeting Mr Putin in the Kremlin after beginning his latest high-profile trip to the country. The two men discussed ways to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries, in addition to regional and international issues of common interest, state news agency Wam reported. They reviewed co-operation in the fields of the economy, trade, investment, space and energy. Sheikh Mohamed said UAE-Russia relations are based on mutual trust and respect, as well as deep-rooted and constructive engagement spanning more than 50 years. He also highlighted the UAE's commitment to strengthening peace and stability around the world. The two men discussed the importance of the Russia-Arab summit, scheduled for October, and reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East. Sheikh Mohamed thanked Mr Putin for facilitating the UAE's mediation concerning the exchange of more than 4,000 prisoners between Russia and Ukraine, while Mr Putin thanked Sheikh Mohamed for the UAE's prisoner swap efforts. Mr Putin said Russia attaches great importance to developing its relations with the UAE, noting the two countries' co-operation continues to grow. He also hosted a lunch for Sheikh Mohamed and the accompanying delegation. Agreements signed On the sidelines of the visit, the two countries signed the Trade in Services and Investment Agreement. Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and Andrey Nikitin, Russian Minister of Transport, also signed an agreement on transport co-operation. Sheikh Mohamed departed Moscow at the conclusion of his official visit, with military aircraft escorting his plane through Russian airspace. Potential meeting with Trump Speaking to television cameras, Mr Putin said the UAE was a possible site for a meeting with Donald Trump – in what would be his first meeting with a US president since Joe Biden in 2021. "We have many friends who are ready to assist us in the organisation of an event of this kind. One of my friends is the President of the UAE," Mr Putin told Russian state media. "I believe that we will make a decision but it [the UAE] would be one of the fitting, quite suitable venues." A Kremlin official said earlier that a Trump-Putin meeting could take place as early as next week. The announcement of a potential summit came on the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress towards ending the three-year-old war in Ukraine. The UAE has this year mediated the exchange of hundreds of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine. Mr Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have thanked the UAE for its efforts in enabling the exchange. Later that month, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, met Mr Putin in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, on behalf of President Sheikh Mohamed, where he attended the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting. Trump picks top economic adviser for Federal Reserve Board

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will nominate top economic adviser Stephen Miran to temporarily serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors as he pushes for more control over the central bank. If confirmed by the US Senate, Mr Miran, chairman of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers, would fill the seat vacated by Adriana Kugler, who is due to step down as Fed governor on Friday. Her term expires on January 31, 2026. 'In the meantime, we will continue to search for a permanent replacement,' Mr Trump wrote on the Truth Social media platform, suggesting he could nominate another person to serve a full 14-year term. Ms Kugler's surprise resignation last week opened the path for Mr Trump to exert power over the Federal Reserve, the independence of which has been tested amid the President's repeated calls for lower interest rates. Ms Kugler was absent and did not vote when the Fed kept its target range for interest rates steady at 4.25 to 4.50 per cent last week. She did not provide a reason for her resignation. The Federal Reserve referred to the White House when asked for comment. The White House referred The National to Mr Trump's Truth Social post when asked for a statement. Mr Miran has been critical of the Federal Reserve in the past, arguing for reforms to the US central bank in a March 2024 paper. 'The Federal Reserve's record in recent years raises questions about whether it has been operating in line with the best practices of central bank independence,' he wrote along with Daniel Katz, who now works at the Treasury Department. Mr Miran is also known for co-developing the 'Mar-a-Lago Accord', a playbook to devalue the dollar while preserving its status as the world's reserve currency. His nomination to the Federal Reserve Board comes as Fed chairman Jerome Powell faces increasing pressure from the Trump administration to lower interest rates. Mr Trump has relentlessly attacked Mr Powell in recent months, even visiting the central bank's headquarters where renovation costs have become a new target for the White House. It also comes as speculation increases over who will replace Mr Powell, whose term as chairman expires in May 2026. On Thursday, Bloomberg reported Fed Governor Christopher Waller has emerged as a top choice to succeed him. Mr Waller was one of two Fed governors to dissent in last week's decision to keep rates unchanged, instead favouring a cut of 25 basis points. He based his reasoning on a forward-looking view that tariffs will lead to a one-off increase in prices and that current data shows the labour market is not as strong as it appears. 'I believe that the wait-and-see approach is overly cautious and, in my opinion, does not properly balance the risks to the outlook and could lead to policy falling behind the curve,' Mr Waller said in a statement last week. 'When labour markets turn, they often turn fast. If we find ourselves needing to support the economy, waiting may unduly delay moving towards appropriate policy.' Mr Powell has not indicated if he intends to serve out the remainder of his term on the central bank, which expires in 2028, after his term as chairman ends.

Work has begun on the much-anticipated multi-billion-dollar UAE-Oman railway project. Plans for a railway between the neighbouring GCC nations have been in the offing since 2022 and work is finally underway. The railway project will initially operate between the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. The project will cover a distance of 303km and travel at speeds of up to 200km/h. And it will be equipped to handle the diverse terrains between the two countries, as well as any unpredictable weather conditions and water flow from surrounding valleys. Innovative and sustainable engineering solutions will ensure safe journeys. Work on the huge project got underway in May 2024, following a shareholder agreement between Hafeet Rail, a company made up of Etihad Rail and Oman Rail, and construction companies. Works are progressing along the railway alignment between the two nations. The update pointed out that progress is underway in several areas in North Al Batinah and Al Buraimi governates in Oman and in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. To date, more than one million man-hours have been clocked in developing the railway. The name of Hafeet Rail for the project was decided following the joint UAE-Oman Business Forum held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday April 23. What the UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail means for you Initially, it will operate between the Al Wathba area near Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. With a speed reaching 200 kilometres per hour, journeys between Abu Dhabi and Sohar will take 100 minutes. Passenger trains will be able to accommodate up to 400 people. The project board aims to 'establish a record-breaking timeline for implementation', so expect it to be established sooner than you think. The freight train will have a capacity equivalent to 300 trucks which will reduce carbon emissions generated by trucks by 80 per cent. Etihad Rail passenger train (Credit: Etihad Rail) It will pass through diverse geographical areas, including the desert and mountainous regions and along Jebel Hafeet – which is where the new Hafeet Rail brand derives its name. The railway aims to be a quick and efficient way of connecting the two countries, which is hoped to reduce car traffic and, consequently, the carbon footprint. This railway project would see the two Gulf countries connect and align with long-term plans for the GCC vision of a Gulf Railway. The Gulf Railway was planned to be opened by 2025, but construction has yet to begin in earnest. And, for businesses, it's predicted that it will have a major impact on trade between the two countries as one freight train trip is capable of transporting 15,000 tonnes of general cargo. Hafeet Rail will connect five major ports and a number of free zones in both countries and will see transportation time cut in half compared to traditional on-ground methods. Hafeet Rail represents a groundbreaking achievement as the first modern cross-border train in the Middle East and the Arab world, connecting the Sultanate of Oman to the United Arab Emirates. — Hafeet Rail (@hafeetrail) June 2, 2024 Living in the UAE Everything you need to know about traffic cameras in Abu Dhabi No, they're not just for speed When is the next public holiday?
