'Toothless, passive, hopeless, clueless'

BBC News04-04-2025

We asked for your views on Chelsea's win over Tottenham in the Premier League. Here are some of your comments:GT: Toothless, passive, hopeless, clueless - take your pick. Ange has no excuse because we have all of our players back. That was shocking.James: Our style of play under Ange has been so laborious, sloppy and littered with mistakes. We put up a reasonable effort but you would normally look to a manager to instil more discipline in how we play. Antonio Conte used to drill the side and we got results. That's what is missing. I'm looking forward to the summer and hopefully a new manager. Until then, we suffer.Joshua: Yet another miserable performance. We only showed signs of threat near the end of the game, by which time it was too late. Ange is hanging by his last thread - the Europa League. If he doesn't win that 'trophy in his second year', then I don't see him having a future at Spurs. It was great at the start, but now Ange's reign has to come to an end if we want to improve as a football team.Andy: Poor Ange has been out of his depth all season. He is a one-trick pony and the best managers in the world have worked him out quickly. The players look dispirited. We have no chance of winning another game in Europe and even the Southampton game is a worrying fixture.Dave: The table doesn't lie - 16 games lost. We are wholly incompetent and clueless, on and off the pitch.Jack: There's nothing to commend, no desire and no intensity. It's just horrible to watch. Massive changes are required at the club over the summer, but they won't happen. The club is in decline on the football side, and it means nothing to the fans that they are doing well financially.

Tottenham star reacts to Frank rumours after 'strange' Postecoglou sacking

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven says he found Ange Postecoglou's dismissal 'strange' given the Australian proved his 'winning mentality' by ending the club's 17-year wait for a trophy. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided to bring Postecoglou's tenure to an abrupt halt last Friday, just 16 days after the north London outfit edged out Manchester United in an all-English Europa League final. The scrappy 1-0 victory secured Tottenham a place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign and Postecoglou would no doubt have been looking forward to leading his side into Europe's premier competition next season. But Spurs' woeful domestic campaign – their worst-ever in the Premier League – ultimately cost Postecoglou his job and the search is ramping up for his successor. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take over the reins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Spurs' talks with Brentford are progressing at a pace. It's understood Tottenham will have to pay a compensation fee of £10million to get a deal over the line for Frank. Asked for his thoughts on Postecoglou's sacking after the Netherlands' 8-0 thrashing of Malta, Van de Van told Voetbal Zone: 'That was ultimately a choice from the club. 'We, as players, have little to say about that. Of course, he is the first coach in a long time who has won a trophy has had success at Spurs. So if you look at it that way, it is of course a strange choice. 'It is a choice from the club about which we have little to say, so we will see what happens now.' Van de Ven admits it looks likely that Frank will be named as Postecoglou's replacement in due course. 'Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach, who it will probably be,' he added. 'So yes, a choice from the club about which we have little to say.' The Dutch centre-back believes Tottenham players must accept much of the responsibility for their 17th-placed finish which led to Postecoglou being fired. 'I think many of the players got along with him well and, of course, what I say is that he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time,' he continued. 'That also shows that he has a certain quality. It also means that he has a winning mentality, 100 per cent. More Trending 'From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired. 'What we have shown in the Premier League is, of course, unacceptable. That would, of course, have been a factor, but that was not only down to the coach.' The leading candidate to replace Postecoglou, Frank, is said to be eager to push through a switch to north London and has reportedly told the club to make Bryan Mbeumo their first summer signing. But Mbeumo is also attracting strong interest from Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils lodging a second offer worth more than £60m for the Cameroon forward in recent days. Tottenham star Micky van de Ven breaks silence on Ange Postecoglou's sacking after Europa League win - as Spurs close in on Thomas Frank appointment

Tottenham star Micky van de Ven has called the decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou 'strange' after delivering the club's first trophy in 17 years last month. The former Celtic manager was dismissed by Daniel Levy after a hugely disappointing Premier League campaign with Tottenham finishing 17th, however he did claim the Europa League final. He beat a Manchester United side that had been almost as poor domestically, but it was not enough to save his job, as Spurs looked to part ways over the summer to give his replacement an opportunity to bed in and rebuild the side ahead of the new season. 'That was ultimately a choice from the club,' Van de Ven told Voetbal Zone of Levy's decision. 'We, as players, have little to say about that. Of course, he is the first coach in a long time who has won a trophy has had success at Spurs. So if you look at it that way, it is of course a strange choice. 'It is a choice from the club about which we have little to say, so we will see what happens now. Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach [Frank], who it will probably be. And of course, what I say, he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time. That also shows that he has a certain quality. That also means that he has a winning mentality. 100 per cent. 'From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired. What we have shown in the Premier League is, of course, unacceptable. That would, of course, have multiple factors, but that would not only have been the coach.' As Van de Ven mentioned, Spurs are expected to appoint Thomas Frank as Postecoglou's successor in the coming days, with the Brentford manager's release clause set to be paid out. Mail Sport reported on Monday that Frank has a release clause thought to be around £10million, but those with knowledge of the situation believe it is heading towards a positive conclusion. Negotiations have now started, with chairman Daniel Levy representing Tottenham and Phil Giles, Brentford's director of football, in talks. Aside from the release fee, discussions are also likely to focus on Frank's backroom staff, and the level of compensation needed to allow them to follow him from west to north London. The Bees will demand suitable recompense for a manager who has been with the club for close to a decade and who has overseen a period of remarkable success. Frank arrived at the club in 2016 as assistant head coach and was appointed manager in 2018. In his first full season in charge he led them to the play-off final and followed it up with promotion to the Premier League. Over the past four years he has firmly established Brentford as a top-flight club.

Enzo Fernandez's partner opens up on Chelsea star's decision to break off their relationship 'with no warning' and why she gave him a second chance

Enzo Fernandez 's partner Valentina Cervantes has admitted it was a 'difficult decision' to give the Chelsea star a second chance after their shock split last year. Fernandez split from his childhood sweetheart in October last year in a move that reportedly blindsided his 25-year-old influencer partner and mother of his two children. Cervantes had later shared that she still loved the midfielder and wished him nothing but the best. Following the split, Cervantes returned to Argentina with their children Olivia and Benjamin, before flying back to London for New Year together as a family. Fernandez and Cervantes were then spotted kissing and holding hands in the capital to spark suggestions the relationship was back on. She underlined the reconciliation in April by sharing a photo with her Instagram followers of Fernandez in bed in a Madrid hotel room, before joining the Argentine on the pitch after Chelsea's triumph in the Conference League. Cervantes was asked about the split and reconciliation with Fernandez on the the Multitalenttv show 'Don't Think So Much'. 'Second chances always come, generally with anyone. Because we're human beings and we can make mistakes,' Cervantes said when asked why she gave Fernandez a second chance. 'No more third chances, there's no third or fourth. We're doing very well now; we've known each other for a long time. Enzo looks at me now and knows what's going on with me. 'The decision to come back was difficult.' When confirming the split last October, Cervantes said they had agreed to put 'space' between them. The split had reportedly occurred with Fernandez telling her 'from one day to the next' he didn't want to be with her anymore. During the split, Fernandez was linked to Argentine rapper and model Nicki Nicole, but Nicole was quick to refute suggestions that the pair were an item. A bombshell report earlier this year claimed Fernandez had in part reunited with the mother of his children after an Argentina team-mate had made a move on Cervantes during the split. Cervantes was present as Fernandez was sent off in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday Fernandez had also been linked to the model Pampita Ardohain during his time apart from Cervantes. Cervantes revealed she had been contacted directly by the model to dispel the reports, with the 25-year-old declaring rumours had been 'invented' during her time apart from Fernandez. She suggested that the brief split has made her relationship with the Chelsea and Argentina star stronger, while claiming the time apart had changed her. 'You realise a lot of things and appreciate other things a lot more,' Cervantes said. 'Looking back on it today, I loved it, it was good. We came together when we were very young, we never separated. 'I'm not the Valentina I was before the split. If Enzo used to tell me about going on vacation just the two of us, I told him I wouldn't leave the kids alone. Nowadays, I'm more accepting of that. 'Nowadays, I'll let them stay for three days, no more than that, and then I miss them. 'One thing we have is that we don't fight, we never fight, for us, that's key. We already know each other so well.
