We thought this would be the last flight of our lives: Passenger on hail-hit Indigo flight

NEW DELHI: Among the 227 passengers aboard the Indigo flight 6E 2142 which survived a sudden hailstorm en route to Srinagar was Sheikh Samiullah, the CEO of start-up FastBeetle. Reliving the ordeal passengers went through for five terrifying minutes, Samiullah said that they all thought they wouldn't survive.
Speaking exclusively to TNIE, Samiullah, who had been seated in 16B, said, "The flight was jam-packed and everything was smooth for some time after we took off by 5 pm. Half our journey was completed. As we were crossing Pathankot (Punjab) by 5.40 pm. the pilot asked everyone to tighten their seat belts and asked the crew to remain seated as they were crossing a path of turbulence."
Everyone did as advised. "I was quite cool about it. I travel frequently to different parts of the world and have heard of flight turbulences and thought it would be something minor. However, what followed was the most traumatic experience in my life. I really thought it would be the last flight of my life."
Saimullah said, "There were streaks of lightning visible through all the windows. There was a dark yellowish colour enveloping the aircraft. The flight was going up and then down. This happened continuously many times and it gave you the feeling of being on a rollercoaster. This went on for five minutes. Everyone was frightened and in complete panic. A kid was vomiting."

Messi will come, asserts Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman

KOCHI: Raising fresh hopes of Lionel Messi playing in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Friday posted on Facebook that the Argentina footballer and his team will visit the state. 'Messi is coming,' the minister posted. Though no dates or venues have been officially confirmed, the announcement comes amid speculation that Argentina may not play in Kerala. 'Messi is definitely coming, that is for sure. The remaining details will be out shortly,' Abdurahiman told TNIE. Last November, he announced the visit of the world champions for two international friendlies in Kerala. 'Team backing out after signing deal unlikely' There were reports that the team was considering playing in other countries in the same window. Argentine sports journalists had put out the schedule for the team's visit to China, Qatar and Angola in their October-November international-friendly break, leading to speculation that the team might not be heading to India during the period. 'It is likely that the team will visit Kerala, as the minister promised, since the contract has already been signed. Though we do not have much information right now, it is very unlikely for a team to back out after the agreement has been made,' said Kerala Football Association president Navaz Meeran.

IndiGo flight from Delhi diverted due to unusual bird movement at Pune airport

Pune: An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Pune on Thursday morning had to be diverted to Surat allegedly due to the presence of birds near the runway area. The flight (6E-2471) had taken off from Delhi at 4.54am instead of its scheduled time of 4.40am and was set to touch down in Pune at 6.45am. Sources in the airport said that the flight reached Pune airport but could not land because of the presence of birds around the runway area. The aircraft, an A-320 with more than 100 flyers, hovered around the airport for around 20 minutes before heading to Surat as it had less fuel, sources said. Airport director Santosh Dhoke was yet to reply to a WhatsApp message on the matter at the time of going to press. Many WhatsApp messages sent to IndiGo also failed to yield any response. Sources in the airline said that one needed to contact Airport Authority of India and Air Traffic Control (ATC) in case of bird activities. ATC of Pune airport is managed by the Indian Air Force. Every aircraft while flying to a destination has a flight plan that includes a secondary airport on which it would land in case of problems or emergencies. If the destination of any aircraft might be hit by rough weather as the pilot sees, extra fuel is taken and in that case, load factor comes into play which includes deboarding luggage of passengers and cargo too. On May 20, a Hyderabad-bound IndiGo flight from Pune faced a major delay, resulting in passengers sitting inside the aircraft for around six hours, due to various reasons, including unusual bird activity in the airport. Akasa Air announced flights from Navi Mumbai airport

Mumbai/New Delhi: Akasa Air will operate flights from day one of the opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The airport is likely to start operations from the end of Aug. The airline will start with 15 daily domestic flights and increase the number to over 40 domestic plus 8-10 international flights by next summer, said Akasa founder-CEO Vinay Dube and co-founder and chief commercial officer Praveen Iyer on Friday. "Between our 32 daily flights at Mumbai CSMIA and NMIA, we will have over 80 daily flights (both domestic and international) by next summer from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). By the financial year 2027, we will have 10 aircraft based at NMIA," said Iyer. Akasa will operate over 100 weekly domestic departures initially, scaling up to over 300 domestic and 50 international departures weekly in the winter schedule, the airline said in a press statement. The winter schedule runs from the end of Oct to the end of March. "As part of its broader network strategy, the airline is also set to ramp up to 10 parking bases by the end of FY2027, with a focused international expansion into key Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets," it added. Last month, IndiGo became the first airline to announce flights from the new airport with a total of 36 domestic departure and arrival flights connecting 15 cities from day one. By Nov, IndiGo will increase its flight frequency to 79 daily departures (158 flights per day, including arrivals). These will include 14 international departures, the airline said. Meanwhile, the Mumbai airport, which handles about 920 flights a day, will continue to handle both domestic and international flights. A few months from now, when ticket booking for flights operated to and from the Navi Mumbai airport opens, passengers will get to choose between the two airports. In phase 1, NMIA will handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually, with ultimate capacity expanding to 90 million passengers and 3.2 MMT of cargo in the final phase. Currently, a notice issued by the country's air navigation provider, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), states that the Navi Mumbai airport runway will remain non-functional until Aug 6. Sources said another notice extending the closure by a few more months is likely to be issued in Aug.
