Couturier Syomirizwa Gupta brings after-party allure to KL Fashion Week with ‘The Sweetest Hangover'

Malay Mail2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Midnight may signal the end of a formal evening for some, but for local fashion designer Syomirizwa Gupta, it is where the real story begins.
His latest bespoke collection, The Sweetest Hangover 2026/27, unveiled on August 8 at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, captures the heady, unguarded glamour of the hours after a black-tie affair — when the ties are loosened, the lights dim, and style remains sharp even as the rules fall away.
'It's about that delicious blur between the night you remember and the one you'll never forget,' Syomir told Malay Mail, describing the collection as 'the afterglow, the laughter, the sparkle that lingers long after the music stops.'

The 25-look collection blends sleek tuxedo tailoring with fluid silks and playful, provocative touches — from tuxedo shirts paired with sequin underwear to a crisp all-white suit with risqué details only revealed up close. Designed for both men and women, the pieces channel confidence without effort and seduction without excess.
Fabrics range from silk satin and chiffon to heavy satin and brocade, while the palette is bold and unapologetic: white, black, fuchsia, magenta, orange, green and yellow — colours chosen to pop under low, late-night lighting.
Drawing inspiration from '70s disco sensuality and late-'90s Tom Ford sophistication, the line carries Syomir's signature tropical pulse, making each look feel as ready for the dance floor as it is for the runway.
With The Sweetest Hangover, Syomir invited KL Fashion Week guests into his vision of the ultimate after-party — one where the cocktails flow, the confidence soars and the glamour never fades.

‘Unhappy meal', McDonald's Japan sorry for Pokemon debacle

Similar problems have hit other McDonald's campaigns, including past collaborations with manga series such as 'Chiikawa'. (AP pic) TOKYO : McDonald's Japan has apologised after a campaign giving away limited-edition Pokemon cards with 'Happy Meals' triggered long queues and social media outrage about food waste. Cards with the 'little monsters' are extremely popular among children but also adult superfans and collectors, with billions printed and some selling for millions of dollars. There have even been cases of shops that sell the cards, which represent monsters and their attributes, being broken into and physical fights breaking out in low-crime Japan. Launched Friday, the McDonald's stunt soon went awry with some people flocking to buy meals in bulk to resell the attached cards at a higher price on e-commerce sites. Social media was awash with complaints about long queues at McDonald's outlets, with unverified pictures of plastic bags full of uneaten burgers and fries. Some dubbed it the 'Unhappy Meals' campaign. 'I couldn't buy a Happy Meal for my daughter because of these people', one user posted on X. 'I'm sure there are adult Pokemon fans who genuinely want the cards, but these resellers are truly embarrassing,' another wrote. 'They go to great lengths to collect them and then throw away food … for how much profit?,' another user wrote. Similar problems have hit other McDonald's campaigns, including past collaborations with manga series such as 'Chiikawa'. Announcing the latest campaign, the firm stressed that each person could buy a maximum of five meals. In a statement Monday, McDonald's conceded there were some instances of 'resale-driven mass purchases by customers' that led to 'our food being thrown away or discarded'. It added that it was looking to 'introduce a stricter cap' on future Happy Meals purchases. 'Any attempts to buy more than permitted, repeatedly stand in the line, and behave intimidatingly toward our staff' will be met with a rejection, the firm said. The US fast food giant also vowed to ask e-commerce sites to take more effective measures against unscrupulous resale.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Fox King, a joint Indonesia and Malaysia production, has been selected to premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said that the film's selection at one of the world's largest film festivals highlights the potential of regional collaborations to make an impact in the international market. 'I am very proud of the achievement of this film, which has successfully secured a spot at one of the world's largest film festivals – the 50th TIFF. This recognition will undoubtedly help elevate the quality and value of collaborative films, between our two neighbouring countries, on the global stage. 'Hopefully, this success will serve as a catalyst for more local producers, directors, and film productions to create high-quality collaborative works, like The Fox King,' she said, congratulating the entire production team in a Facebook post. Teo said that the film, directed by Malaysian filmmaker Woo Ming Jin and starring renowned Indonesian actress Dian Sastrowardoyo, also received support from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) through the 2023 Creative Content Fund, which allocated RM1 million, and the 2025 International Participation and Promotion Fund of RM50,000.
