Miyawaki forest trail along B Canal locked & littered
Built under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative in 2021, the stretch between Kasturba Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur MRTS has turned into a hangout spot for loiterers, say residents, while its walkways are strewn with dry leaves, plastic waste, and broken signboards.
The trail was made for residents to keep themselves healthy, and also to create a public gathering space for kids to play. The trail, created by Rotaract Club, Communi-Tree, an urban greenery conservation NGO, and the Greater Chennai Corporation, had signboards of different kinds of trees and shrubs.
J Sridhar from Rotaract Club, who initiated the project, said 7,000 saplings were planted in the park that was built at a cost of 12 lakh.
The park was handed over to GCC after three years of maintaining it, he said.

CommuniTree founder Hafiz Khan said the trail was in good shape for the most part and the NGO's project manager, Jonathan Isaac, said the trail will be cleaned and opened soon.
Residents and passersby complain of the stench. Many were not even aware of the trail. Sneha R of Adyar, who used to go with her 10-year-old son, said, "The trees are not pruned. I wouldn't recommend anyone to use it."
GCC regional deputy commissioner (South) Aftab Rasool said he would look into it.

Mogappair park neglected, unusable
Chennai: Once a green haven in East Mogappair, a park maintained by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has now become a safety hazard and eyesore for residents. With broken play equipment, cracked pathways, and crumbling walls, the park is no longer usable, especially for the elderly and children. Despite repeated complaints, locals allege, civic authorities have failed to take action. You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Residents said the damaged infrastructure is causing daily inconvenience. "This is the only park in a 5km radius, and it was left to decay. While some of us try to keep it clean, the park needs a complete overhaul. The walls are dangerously weak and could collapse anytime," said S Adityan, a resident and regular jogger. Footpaths are uneven and riddled with holes, causing several senior citizens to stumble, and children to trip and fall on rusted play equipment. The lawn is dry and patchy. GCC officials have said that complaints about park maintenance can be raised by calling 1913. However, locals say that the calls are unanswered most of the time. R Manikandan, a member of the Panneer Nagar residents welfare association, said they had been complaining about the park's condition for months. "Not only has the corporation ignored our requests to restore the space, but the park also became a hotspot for anti-social activities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo After around 8.30pm, people sneak in, drink alcohol, and cause a nuisance. This too needs to be addressed," he said. Outside the park, the situation is no better. Garbage is regularly dumped near the entrance, causing a foul smell that hits visitors as soon as they approach. Stray cows and buffaloes are often seen feeding on the waste, which includes spoiled vegetables and plastic covers. "Despite having enough sanitation workers under the Ambattur zone, garbage is cleared only once in two days," said resident M Roopa Shankar. Ward 91 councillor A Malini said that the issue was escalated to GCC. "An estimate for renovation is being prepared. We are working on a plan to restore and maintain the park properly," she said.

4,300 villages, just 671 ration depots: Tribals seek more PDS shops in Alluri Sitarama Raju district
VISAKHAPATNAM: The public in the newly formed Alluri Sitarama Raju district are demanding more public distribution system (PDS) shops, famously known as ration depots, as there are an insufficient number of depots in faraway places, creating problems for the tribals to get the ration. Tribals and people's organisations are demanding more ration depots by repairing the GCC depots in the district. Moreover, there are allegations that there is no supervision over the existing 671 depots for 8.91 lakh beneficiaries of 2.98 lakh ration cards. The new district has three revenue divisions, which have over 4,300 villages in 22 mandals. It is recalled that the tribal area in the combined Visakhapatnam district had only 11 mandals and around 5 lakh population with only one revenue division, Paderu. After the merger of Rampachodavaram division of East Godavari district and Chintoor of the erstwhile Khamam district, the district population increased to 9.54 lakh, enhancing two more divisions and villages from 3,200 to 4,300 in the district, whose extent increased to 12,251 square kilometres. The public is now demanding mini ration depots in the interior pockets as the existing ration depots are up to 10 km away from their habitations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'We have only 671 depots for around 4,300 villages, which means 6.5 km is the average distance of each ration depot to the villages. We come all the way from our hilltop villages, and nobody cares about how we carry the ration to our villages and face hardships,' one of the villagers, M Mahesh, said. The Adivasi JAC leader, Ramarao Dora, said that the situation would be different and the hardships of tribals are more in the rainy season as bulging streams and rivulets create more problems. The Girijana Sangham leaders say that many ration depots and godowns are in a dilapidated state following the PDS ration supply at GCC depots being stopped by the previous govt. The leaders hope that the visit of Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar in Paderu division may change the situation.
