
AI and power demand to drive data centre changes
LAST year was marked by transformative trends, innovative advancements, and a few surprises along the way. Malaysia has solidified itself as a leading data centre hub, setting the stage for greater progress in 2025.
For the second consecutive year, Malaysia ranked first among Southeast Asian nations in Knight Frank's SEA report with an impressive annual data centre take-up of 429 megawatts, thanks to strategic investments from major tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Google.
Alongside this growth, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly expanded throughout 2024 transforming computing needs, fuelling growth and innovation. Recognising the urgency of staying competitive in the AI race, it's encouraging to see Malaysia taking proactive step by establishing the National AI Office last year, serving as a centralised authority to provide direction in this wave of innovation and address uncertainties surrounding AI's rapid development.
At the core of this AI development are data centres, accelerated computing infrastructure, and the power and cooling solutions required to support surging AI workloads. However, this raises a critical question: how sustainable are these resource-intensive investments? Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad very recently emphasised that while Malaysia attracts tech companies, the government remains cautious and become more selective in approving projects due to the strain on energy and water resources. To address these challenges, demand-management strategies are in the sights of government, working towards net-zero carbon goals.
Looking ahead, with the continued surge in AI demands and digital infrastructure trends shaping 2024, 2025 is set to be another transformative year filled with innovation, growth, and sustainable advancements in several areas. For instance, the concept of agentic AI has garnered significant attention in recent discussions for its ability to autonomously performing complex tasks.
The trends outlined below closely align with those shared by my colleague – Steven Carlini, chief advocate, data centres and AI vice-president for Schneider Electric's Secure Power division.
The art of grid balancing
IDC projects that by 2027, data centres will consume 2.5% of global electricity, with the remaining 97.5% allocated across sectors like buildings, manufacturing, transportation, and energy. This growing demand for power is already being felt in regions such as Johor, where the city council mayor points out that, despite the expansion of data centres, water and power supply continue to pose significant challenges. The increasing energy consumption from data centres adds pressure to local infrastructure, underscoring the need for sustainable solutions in both energy and water management. Looking ahead, collaboration between utilities and data centres will expand, leveraging AI to optimise power profiles and manage off-grid operations using backup sources.
This collaboration is also expected to gain momentum, driven by the need to stabilise renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, and the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into data centres. Data centre operators in Malaysia stand to gain from the upcoming Large Scale Solar programme, with the government offering third-party concession agreements for the installation of BESS, creating opportunities for more reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
Charting new energy frontiers
In response to data centre's growing energy demand, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof recently said that Malaysia will be reviewing its nuclear energy initiatives based on informed research and international standards to enable them to be more energy self-sufficient. This comes as major tech companies like Google and Amazon secure stable energy sources, with some already acquiring nuclear power plants as of late last year. While natural gas turbines may be a near-term addition to these sites, the future could see the adoption of small modular reactors (SMRs). Once approved, SMRs offer a cost-effective and flexible alternative for energy generation, particularly in areas with specific power needs.
AI unleashed – it's impact beyond 2025
As AI companies ramp up investments, data centre operators and co-location providers are shifting their focus toward accelerated computing capacity tailored specifically to AI requirements. This trend underscores the growing adoption of AI across businesses, governments, and industries, driving the need for expanded data centre infrastructure. In Malaysia, AI is also making inroads into traditional sectors with a palm oil mill in Kuala Kangsar recently upgraded into a smart facility, leveraging AI-powered sensors, advanced technology, and predictive tools to enhance palm oil processing efficiency.
AI is set to revolutionise the data centre industry, driving both immediate changes and long-term advancements. Realising this potential requires a collective commitment to sustainable practices and harnessing AI's potential for efficiency. This is especially timely, as Malaysian companies must also prepare for stricter compliance with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2024, which aims to regulate energy consumption and promote energy conservation across various sectors.
Bending the curve of energy consumption
In response to the evolution of AI, Schneider Electric has introduced a science-based approach to 'bend the curve' of energy consumption. At the heart of our efforts is the concept of 'energy intelligence for sustainable AI,' which integrates AI-driven applications into data centre infrastructure to support sustainability goals.
We also accelerated our AI-ready data centre solutions through several new announcements, including our partnership with NVIDIA to develop a data centre reference design optimised for liquid-cooled AI clusters. To tackle the rising temperatures associated with high-density workloads, we entered into an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Motivair Corporation. This move expands our liquid cooling portfolio and bolsters our capabilities in direct-to-chip liquid cooling and high-capacity thermal management solutions.
While we drive AI innovation, we are to remain committed to enabling AI anywhere with a true end-to-end infrastructure solution. A key milestone is the Galaxy VXL UPS, Schneider Electric's latest breakthrough in UPS technology. Building on 50 years of Galaxy innovation, the Galaxy VXL is the industry's first compact, high-density UPS designed for AI data centres. This 1.25-megawatt modular UPS delivers more power while achieving 70% space savings. Its scalable design supports evolving AI workloads, offering AI load tolerance, peak power capabilities, and peak shaving operations.
The energy and environmental footprint of AI is expanding at an unprecedented rate, making it essential to reduce this trajectory by innovating new approaches to decarbonise data centres and digital infrastructure. Achieving this vision demands a comprehensive strategy that spans from the grid to the chip, the chiller, and beyond.

IMF says high tariffs would see Vietnam's growth slow to 5.4pct this year
HANOI: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Wednesday that Vietnam's economic growth this year would slow to 5.4 per cent from last year's expansion of 7.09 per cent under a "high tariffs" scenario. The Southeast Asian industrial hub has held several rounds of negotiations with the US to strike a deal to avoid the Trump administration's threatened 46 per cent tariff rate on its exports. "The outlook is heavily dependent on the outcome of trade negotiations and is constrained by elevated global uncertainty on trade policies and economic growth," the IMF said in a statement. The IMF said under the high-tariff scenario, economic growth would decelerate further next year, but added that "if global trade tensions subside, the economic outlook would improve significantly". An IMF team met with senior officials of the government, central bank, finance ministry, think tanks and other stakeholders over the past two weeks, it said in a statement.

Malaysian airlines on high alert amid Middle East airspace closures
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's aviation sector is on high alert, prioritising safety to avoid a repeat of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 more than a decade ago. The heightened caution follows a wave of airspace closures by Arab states after Iran launched a missile strike on a United States (US) base in Qatar. Qatar, one of the region's busiest aviation hubs, temporarily closed its airspace on Monday evening in response to the attack, as geopolitical tensions intensified amid the military conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel. Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology economist (aviation and aerospace), Associate Professor Mohd Harridon Mohamed Suffian, said the attacks and ongoing tension in the region posed a significant risk to national carriers and other local aviation operators. Endau Analytics founder and aviation analyst Shukor Yusof also warned that Southeast Asian airlines are highly vulnerable, as they rely on Middle Eastern airspace for Europe-bound flights. Mohd Harridon said Southeast Asian carriers may be forced to reroute westward flights. Understandably, the development has raised concerns among regional carriers, including Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X, as the conflict could significantly affect flight operations and safety. AirAsia X focuses on destinations within Asia and Australia, but its seasonal flights from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah and Medina typically pass through the Southern Gulf region Dubbed the gateway to the world, Qatar Airport reportedly serves over 360,000 flights and 30 million passengers every year. 'The risk could extend into other realms, such as economic downturn, a decline in financial stature, and a slowdown in trade and commerce,' Mohd Harridon told Bernama in response to the Middle East conflict, especially following Iran's missile strike on a US base in Qatar. Other Arab states have followed suit in closing their airspace. Bahrain confirmed a suspension of air navigation due to escalating regional volatility, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iraq and Oman have implemented similar measures. Local Airlines Prioritise Passengers' Safety Malaysia Airlines has reaffirmed its commitment to safety, stating that all flights are subject to ongoing risk assessments in light of regional tensions affecting parts of Middle Eastern airspace. 'We remain guided by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and other global aviation authorities to ensure the safety of airspace used in operations. 'All flight routes are evaluated using real-time intelligence, global security reports, notices to airmen (NOTAMs), and continuous surveillance via the airline's SATCOM-enabled flight monitoring system,' Malaysia Airlines said. The national carrier added that it remains vigilant and will implement necessary operational changes—including rerouting or suspensions—if required, as the safety of passengers and crew remains its utmost priority. Similarly, AirAsia X confirmed it is closely monitoring developments and will adhere to all necessary safety procedures. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that several Malaysian flights to the Middle East have been cancelled following the missile strike on the US military base in Qatar yesterday. Operational Costs Expected to Rise from Rerouting Mohd Harridon said the affected region is a key corridor for flight traffic. 'Any diversions would entail an increase in operational costs due to higher fuel consumption during flights.' He said the additional distance covered during flights would also be a point of contention, as this would increase flight duration and require rescheduling of timetables. 'There is a possibility that the conflicted area, especially coastal regions, could become constricted in terms of movements and overflight access. This would create a domino effect, with notable ripple impacts. 'The restriction of trade, particularly fuel, would increase financial pressure on the logistical supply chain and affect other areas around the Middle East that are prone to closure due to the expansion of offensive attacks. This would further erode the economic vibrancy of the aviation industry,' he said. Geopolitical Volatility Reshaping Air Travel Endau Analytics's Shukor warned that the current conflict signals a deepening of a longstanding risk corridor. 'The real risks from geopolitics to airlines began over 10 years ago when MH17 was blown up. What we are seeing today is a further extension of the breakdown in international relations,' he said. Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 – en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014 – was shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine. 'We live in very uncertain times. Airlines will be cautious about reinstating flights until there is stability. In my opinion, there won't be calm for the next three-and-a-half years,' he said. He said prolonged instability would severely hurt the balance sheets of airlines and could reshape how people travel globally, with a shift away from intercontinental travel towards more regional options. Mohd Harridon said the financial structures of airlines should be economically aligned in order to diminish the repercussions of these headwinds. 'Bear in mind, the frequency of westbound flights is significant, and thus the economies of scale are heavily depleted and would take a considerable amount of time to recover. 'Mitigation plans should be in place by these airlines to optimise flight operations, and adherence to lean operations is both an economic and financial obligation,' he added.

As part of its global expansion, Yuanda Group will be establishing a Southeast Asian regional logistics and smart service centre in Malaysia. At the official launch of its brand and products in the Malaysian market on Tuesday in Shah Alam, BLT described the event as a strategic milestone in its Asean expansion journey. Over 200 professionals and representatives from the government, construction, development, engineering and maintenance sectors attended the launch. Dong Yang Elevator's chief executive officer Yeow Ewe Hor emphasised the importance of collaborative potential and the future of Malaysia's building and construction ecosystem to be integrated into smart and sustainable cities. "Malaysia's vertical transportation industry is at a turning point toward safer, greener and smarter systems," he said, adding that the industry needs to address three core challenges - safety, sustainability and innovation. Yeow also said that since 2008, Dong Yang has worked hand in hand with BLT, selling over 400 elevators and maintaining more than 1,300 units locally. "We've actively implemented global standards, green technologies and intelligent maintenance systems. "Moving forward, we'll continue collaborating closely with Public Works Department, Department of Occupational Safety and Health and other government bodies to shape the future of intelligent vertical mobility in Malaysia," he said. Established in 2002, Dong Yang is a leading Malaysian supplier of elevators, escalators, and home lifts. Separately, BLT general manager of international sales Liu Ruisheng said the company has cultivated its presence in Malaysia for 18 years and is now entering a key phase in its strategic upgrade. "We plan to establish a regional logistics centre in Malaysia, leveraging the geographical and industrial strengths to serve the Southeast Asian market and accelerate our global brand development," he said. In recent years, BLT's export performance has grown steadily with exports surpassing RMB580mil in 2024, reaching more than 140 countries and regions worldwide, ranking among the top Chinese elevator exporters. Additionally, the successful operation of Yuanda Group's joint venture factory in Saudi Arabia has become a benchmark for high-end smart manufacturing. This year, the group will launch its assembly plant in the United States, aiming to build a global platform for smart, digital and green vertical transportation solutions with Saudi Arabia and Malaysia as dual engines of this strategy.
