White shorts are still a bloody nightmare for Scottish Women's football

There is a huge issue in the women's game that has still not been properly addressed by clubs

IT often goes unsaid that women have periods; this is a fact that we all know.
So, why does it come as a surprise to Scottish football clubs that the possibility of female footballers wearing white shorts could feel risky to them?

Back in 2023, Scottish fullback Nicola Docherty brought forward the issue of female footballers wearing white shorts during their menstrual cycle.
She argued: 'If only one woman feels uncomfortable, then that's enough for us to change it.'

Now, wearing white shorts is no longer an issue for Scottish international players.
It is intriguing, however, that this change has not transcended to club football.
Celtic and Rangers, despite being two of the biggest clubs in Scottish football, still seem slow to keep up with the trends, with both teams still, this season, playing in white shorts.
This comes in stark contrast to the women's game in England, where their efforts to make a change have been significant, with the Lionesses and Wimbledon examples of period-concern kit changes.

The Lionesses are now able to play worry-free in navy shorts and
Wimbledon athletes compete with black undershorts beneath their traditional all-white outfits.
The constant fear of 'bleeding through' should not be on the minds of athletes, especially at a professional level.
Periods are experienced by almost every woman on the planet, so the consistent ignorance of the issue is just not a justifiable argument anymore.
Thankfully, some Scottish clubs have awareness, with a pertinent example being Livingston FC's Natasha Frew.

Back in 2022, Frew advocated for a change of kit. With Livingston's strip previously being all-white, she argued for a change to black shorts.
The Livingston skipper told the BBC how this
will 'allow us to focus more on our game".
Obviously, the prospect of leaking on live television mid-match should not need to be a concern for players because it is, quite frankly, humiliating, distracting and easily solved.
So, why, despite the progress made in 2022/23, are we in 2025, and this is still a pressing issue?

Until there is an introduction of a mandatory kit guideline by the SWPL for clubs, conversations will still need to be had.
Clearly, some Scottish clubs remain strangely unaware of the issue of white shorts clashing with a player's time of the month, with more pressure from players for a kit change clearly required.
The introduction of a kit policy change in the SWPL would be a significant progression in Scottish women's football.
If the first step is taken at a professional level, then grassroots
teams will likely follow suit.

The issue of female athletes bleeding once a month isn't going anywhere.
So, Scottish clubs and leagues need to work together to enforce change to kits and rules, because without people such as Docherty and Frew progress will never happen.

Celtic star Yang to seal EFL Championship move as Hoops clear decks by letting THIRD winger leave with Jota injured

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC continue to make room for squad improvements this summer with Yang the latest fringe man poised to leave the club. The South Korean winger has been pictured wearing a Norwich City strip this evening and SunSport understands that an initial loan deal to the East Anglia side is set to go through imminently. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 3 Yang celebrates his goal against Newcastle Credit: Kenny Ramsay 3 Yang has been spotted in the colours of Norwich City We told you last week how Norwich were a likely destination for the player. He'll follow Nicolas Kuhn, who joined Como on a permanent deal this summer, and Luis Palma, who's on the move to Lech Poznan on loan, on the way out of Parkhead this summer. He'll also likely be joined going out the exit door by another winger in the form of Aussie star Marco Tilio, who has been strongly linked with a move to Rapid Vienna - while big money recruit Jota is out injured for several months. Yang, 23, moved to Celtic two years ago in a £2million deal from Gangwon in his homeland. He appeared 34 times across all competitions last season, just nine of those were league starts. In total, Yang has featured 65 times for the Hoops and scored seven goals. Brendan Rodgers has added Benjamin Nygren but is still hoping to add to his wide options this transfer window. Antwerp's Michel-Ange Balikwisha has been a long term target and the departure of Yang could pave the way for his arrival. The Canaries are in the market for a new winger after losing star man Borja Sainz in a mega money deal. Norwich have made an incredible profit on Spanish winger Sainz who they signed on a free transfer from Turkish side Giresunspor in 2023. Former Celtic star Greg Taylor stuns PAOK team-mates as he belts out Abba tune for his initiation song And SunSport understands that Yang is the man they think can fill that void. 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

‘Worst outcome for any football match' – Fans baffled at bizarre kit quirk during Lionesses semi-final with Italy

Viewers began questioning why both teams were wearing their away kits, when the team's home colours kits don't appear to clash. The Italians typically wear their iconic Savoy azure, deemed the national colour of Italy. This wouldn't have necessarily clashed with England's white jersey, but the Lionesses home kit does include blue shorts. Sarina Wiegman's side home uniform also includes blue strips down the side and around the collar and chest. But confused supporters were left perplexed by the call. One joked online: "Both teams playing in their away kits - OK come clean - who forgot to check their emails?" Another quizzed: "Why are both teams wearing their away kits considering if they wore the home kits would still blue vs white?" 3 England's home kit is white, with blue accents in the shirt and blue shorts Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 3 Meanwhile, Italy's home kit is the traditional Savoy azure colour, with white shorts and blue lines Credit: Shutterstock Editorial CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS A third asked: "Beats me why England can't be in all white and Italy in all blue here honestly. This is awful lol." While a fourth added: "Neither team wearing their home kit is the absolute worst outcome for any football match though." I coached Chloe Kelly as a kid and have now spent £3,000 building my own pub to watch her at Euro 2025 But both home kits could've caused a clash because the Lionesses' kit includes a lot of blue. Meanwhile, Italy's green away kit would've clashed with England's home kit. Italy wore their green away kit for the first time in the tournament during their shock 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway. And it's gifted the team more luck, as the Azzurre went 1-0 up through Barbara Bonansea's smart finish from six yards out inside 33 minutes.
