Bursa extends losses amid risk-off sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR : The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) has extended its decline for a fourth consecutive session today, underscoring a deepening risk-off sentiment across Malaysia's equity market, said an analyst.
UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan noted that foreign investors remained net sellers on both Monday and Tuesday, amplifying the sell-off as external macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds continue to dominate investor positioning.
'Market sentiment remains fragile as global investors weigh persistent political and fiscal uncertainty in the US,' he told Bernama.
Despite resilient domestic fundamentals, evidenced by strong export figures released, the local market performance remains largely dictated by exogenous variables.
'Until greater clarity emerges on the US fiscal path and monetary policy trajectory, market volatility is likely to persist, warranting a cautious but opportunistic approach,' he added.

Rising number of tourists to lift Genting's earnings

PETALING JAYA: As Genting Bhd began its new financial year with a disappointment amid lacklustre performances from all its gaming units, analysts have downgraded their earnings projections for the stock. Nevertheless, the market remains bullish on the conglomerate, with the majority of analysts keeping a 'buy' call. In fact, UOB Kay Hian Research (UOBKH Research) upgraded its rating to 'buy' after Genting's results announcement on May 29. Genting, which dropped off the FBM KLCI list last December, saw lower than-expected contributions from gaming operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and the United States in the first quarter of the year (1Q25). Despite higher contributions from the plantations and power businesses, Genting's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) slumped 22.7% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM2bil with revenue dropping 12.4% y-o-y to RM6.5bil. Following this, TA Research cut its earnings for this year (FY25) by 47% and 68% for FY26. This was done after revising lower the earnings forecasts for Genting Singapore Ltd and Resorts World Las Vegas, as well as incorporating Genting Malaysia Bhd 's (GenM) revised earnings projections. UOBKH Research, on the other hand, believes GenM's profitability remains intact. However, it said it thinks that unfavourable capital management, a potential capital expenditure upcycle that may pressure gearing, and finance costs may result in longer period of valuations de-rating. 'Key re-rating catalysts include winning another New York casino tender. With the share price correcting 19% year-to-date, valuations appear depressed below the mean with a palatable 5.5% to 7% dividend yield,' the research house said. Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) said it has cut its earnings forecast for Genting by 26% for FY25 and 27.6% for FY26. HLIB Research, which is one of the research houses that has cut its target price for the Genting, continues to like Genting for its well-established operational presence across diverse regions, mitigating regulatory and geographical risks. Going forward, it expects Genting to benefit from the stronger tourist arrivals in both Singapore and Malaysia. 'Besides, Genting has the potential value-add with its stake in TauRx Pharmaceutical Ltd in Scotland if its drug, hydromethylthionine mesylate (HMTM) receives US Food and Drug Administration approval.' Genting has a 20.3% stake in the pharmaceutical company. On GenM, Kenanga Research expects the company to see 'better days beyond FY25'. It said Resorts World Genting is seeing more local visitors, along with Singaporeans and Indonesians. Mainland Chinese and Indian tourists are also expected to increase as Malaysia builds up momentum towards welcoming 36 million visitors in Visit Malaysia 2026. 'The Ebitda margin is expected to improve marginally and gradually from current 26% towards 27% to 25% over FY25 to FY26 on improving visitor numbers. 'GenM's US operations should see softer but still firm earnings from Resorts World New York City on rising risk of slower local economic growth coupled with full consolidation of still loss-making Empire Resorts Inc. 'The group's British and Egypt operations are also expected to report firm earnings with rising risk of some softening,' added Kenanga Research.

MACC freezes over RM750mil in assets linked to Daim's wife, family

The Kuala Lumpur High Court has allowed MACC's application to freeze assets worth RM758.2 million belonging to Naimah Khalid and her family. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a court order to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah Khalid, the wife of the late former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences, and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid granted MACC's application to freeze the assets in an ex parte proceeding today. The court order will be sent to UK authorities for enforcement. According to MACC, investigations revealed that the assets were linked to suspected offences under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. The commission said the freeze was part of ongoing efforts to trace and recover assets believed to be connected to unlawful activity. MACC chief Azam Baki previously said the commission was considering seizing over RM2 billion in undeclared assets linked to Daim, his family, and proxies. Eight new investigation papers were opened after the receipt of fresh information from foreign agencies. In January last year, Daim claimed trial to a charge of failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by MACC. He was accused of not disclosing his ownership of 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts, and seven luxury cars. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. She is accused of failing to declare her ownership in various companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, and two vehicles. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him.

CIMB Securities cuts KLCI earnings forecasts by 5.6% after weak 1Q

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Securities has revised downward its earnings forecasts for FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) constituents by 5.6 per cent for both 2025 and 2026, citing widespread underperformance in the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q 2025). The brokerage said the downgrade was primarily driven by lower earnings projections for the banking sector, Sime Darby Bhd , and Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd . "As a result, CIMB now forecasts KLCI core net profit growth at 3.4 per cent for 2025 and 6.5 per cent for 2026, down from 9.3 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively. CIMB Securities has also lowered its end-2025 FBM KLCI target to 1,560 points from 1,657, based on an unchanged price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 14.7 times. "The KLCI is trading at a 12-month forward P/E of 12.7 times with an attractive dividend yield of 4.2 per cent, but the upside may be capped by downside risks including the 10 per cent US import tariff, the end of the tariff reprieve on July 9, potential hikes in the Sales and Service Tax (SST) and RON95 fuel prices in the second half of 2025, and higher electricity tariffs expected in July. "These headwinds may be partially offset by strong domestic liquidity, a strengthening ringgit, and policy support from initiatives such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030),' CIMB Securities said. The brokerage noted that only 7 per cent of companies under its coverage beat expectations in the first quarter, while 64 per cent missed, pulling the earnings surprise ratio down to 0.24 times, the weakest showing since the second quarter of 2020. It attributed the underperformance to lower-than-expected net interest margins for banks, weaker earnings in the oil and gas, consumer, and technology sectors, along with higher effective tax rates and foreign exchange losses. In terms of sector positioning, CIMB downgraded oil and gas and plantations to "neutral' from "overweight' due to a lack of near-term catalysts. It downgraded Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd and Sime Darby Plantation Bhd to "hold' from "buy.' Despite the cautious tone, the brokerage maintained its overweight stance on telecommunications, utilities, and construction. It added Maxis Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd , and IOI Corp Bhd to its top large-cap picks, alongside existing names such as CelcomDigi Bhd, Gamuda Bhd , Public Bank Bhd , RHB Bank Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd , and 99 SpeedMart. In the small- and mid-cap space, Axis Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) has been added to its list of recommended stocks, joining Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB), KJTS Group Bhd , Farm Fresh Bhd , and Mah Sing Group Bhd . - Bernama
