‘Aim up against the boys': Queensland Oaks-bound filly Churchill's Choice to excite in Queensland Guineas

News.com.au01-05-2025
Young Group 1 winning trainer Nathan Doyle has no qualms about taking on the boys with his exciting young filly Churchill's Choice in Saturday's Queensland Guineas.
Newcastle trainer Doyle, who soared into the Group 1 club when sprint weapon Private Harry won The Galaxy, feels Churchill's Choice could arguably be coming to the Sunshine State unbeaten.
The filly has won three from four with her only defeat when she resumed over 1400m in a Group 3 race at Randwick last start, finishing fourth and beaten a length after seeing little clear air.
Churchill's Choice, which gets a two-kilo advantage on her male rivals, is a $5 chance in the Group 2 Guineas and Doyle points out she would have been shorter in Guineas betting had she arrived in Queensland with a picket fence of wins next to her name.
She is already highly rated as a Group 1 Queensland Oaks chance – at $6 in betting – and can zoom into Oaks favouritism with an impressive display over 1600m at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
'I know she is in the Guineas against the boys, but I think she can aim up,' Doyle said.
'She was in restricted room the whole straight last start, she should have been in the finish and Kerrin McEvoy thought the same as me.
'The last few strides she really just dashed at them, she was just winding up.
'If she got a bit of room last start she could be going up to Queensland unbeaten and she would be a lot shorter in the (betting) market than she is.
'I really like the horse, she wants to be a racehorse and she attacks the line.
'She has got a bright future.'
Doyle rates Churchill's Choice every bit as good as stablemate Harlem Queen, the filly which was Group 1 placed last spring and also ran fourth in the VRC Oaks behind rising superstar Treasurethe Moment.
Harlem Queen didn't fire at Eagle Farm last Saturday, failing to flatter when finishing 11th in the Princess Stakes after starting the $2.90 favourite.
But there was an excuse for the flop when it was discovered the filly had sustained a wound on her leg in the race.
Harlem Queen will most likely press on in an Oaks campaign with her next start likely to be in The Roses later this month where she could tangle with Churchill's Choice.
As for Churchill's Choice, Doyle says the filly is giving him every indication the 2200m of next month's Oaks won't pose a problem.
'She shows me she just wants to relax and doesn't over do it in her races and she gets into a nice rhythm,' Doyle said.
'I feel 2200(m) shouldn't be an issue. She is just so unassuming, when you take her to race day she just produces.
'In the Guineas on Saturday, she has a perfect gate (9) to give her a bit of room and let her balance up, I think she will be very competitive.'

2025 The Rosebud: Michael Freedman to saddle up Pallaton

Exciting colt Pallaton could thrust himself straight into the Group 1 frame with a statement performance in Saturday's Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. Trainer Michael Freedman is ready to set the bar high with his smart son of Wootton Bassett but will first need to see him back to his best in the first Sydney stakes race of the season. Pallaton was restricted to just three starts during his juvenile season but showed more than enough to suggest he is a colt with plenty of talent. The lightly-raced three-year-old was a dominant winner on debut at Royal Randwick last December in a performance that put him high in contention for the Golden Slipper. But Pallaton never made Australia's coveted two-year-old showpiece after falling flat in two autumn runs. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'He had his Golden Slipper curtailed when he got a bit of a throat infection after his second run and when he got to the third run he was over the top and overraced badly, showing signs of a two-year-old that wasn't ready to go on with it,' Freedman said. 'He had a nice long break and a nice steady build up. 'The two trials I've been happy so hopefully we can see him show a bit of what we saw on his first start.' • Rosehill Turf Talk: Cohen keen on $5 best bet as O'Cass spruiks $17 pop Odds makers have installed Pallaton as a $2.40 favourite in his return with Tommy Berry booked to ride. A Group 1 date could follow his first-up assignment with Group 1 $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on September 6 a potential target. 'I want to see what unfolds on Saturday and work it out from there but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a Moir if he shaped that way because he is quite a powerfully built sprinting type,' Freedman said. 'I think Saturday will give us a better indication of what path we want to go down with him. 'I am certainly not ruling out the Golden Rose as a possibility and am just keeping a lot of options open for him at the moment.' • Shayne O'Cass's race-by-race tips and analysis for Rosehill Garfdens on Saturday Freedman could already have a three-year-old winner on the program by the time Pallaton goes around with promising stablemate Ninja ($1.95 favourite) set to come to town for the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). Ninja broke his maiden in the most memorable performance, scoring eye-catching style with an 11-1/4 length romp at Kembla Grange. Freedman is wary of overplaying the victory but believes Ninja is a nice horse in the making. 'It was a four horse field on a bog track so I don't think the margin is that significant,' he said. 'He is a nice progressive type and will definitely handle the conditions. 'It is a big jump from a maiden to a Saturday in town but he is still a work in progress. Polyglot is another exciting galloper that could be himself in the frame for better races in the spring when he returns in the TAB Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). It will be Freedman's second Godolphin runner following the success of Ohope at Hawkesbury during the week. Polyglot, a $5 favourite, had trialled up well in the lead up but James McDonald has been set a task with a tricky draw from barrier 12. • Flindell opens up on missile terror and 'worst nightmare' 'I am really happy with Polyglot,' Freedman said. 'He had two nice trials and is obviously familiar with the course and distance but the big concern will be the barrier in terms of where he might get to from the draw. Bunker Hut ($8) could complete a big day for Freedman when the gelding lines up in the Petaluma Benchmark 94 Handicap (1200m).

Premier League transfer news: Ouattara deal sparks domino effect, could trigger Isak to Reds

Brentford are closing in on a £42.5million deal for Bournemouth forward Dango Outtara, talkSPORT understands. A club-to-club agreement is expected imminently and Outtara is keen on the move from the Cherries. Outtara's arrival at the Gtech Community Stadium should allow Yoane Wissa to then join Newcastle from Brentford. Brentford had been adamant that Wissa would not be sold after Bryan Mbeumo left to join Manchester United for £71million. But talkSPORT previously reported that they were willing to soften their not-for-sale stance on Wissa if they found a replacement. And now it appears Ouattara is about to become that replacement. Wissa is currently training alone and pushing for a transfer to Newcastle after leaving Brentford's pre-season camp in Portugal. The Magpies have seen two bids for Wissa rejected, including one worth an initial £30m plus £5m in potential add-ons. The DR Congo international, who has less than one year remaining on his contract, believes he had a gentlemen's agreement with Brentford to leave this summer after agreeing to stay for the 2024/25 campaign. He wants to play Champions League football and has been willing to wait for Newcastle, with Toon now expecting to get a deal over the line by the end of this week. Brentford signing Outtara and Newcastle bringing in Wissa could then open the door for Alexander Isak to leave St James' Park. The Magpies have been reluctant to sell Isak without finding a replacement first – and they recently missed out on Benjamin Sesko to Man United despite making a club-record £69.4m bid. Newcastle have also been linked with Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, RB Leipzig's Lois Openda and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson. talkSPORT understands the Toon Army have also inquired about the availability of Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. But it seems that Wissa is finally going to be the man to come in. Sweden superstar Isak is desperate to join Liverpool, who had a £110m rejected earlier this month, and he is currently banished from Newcastle training amid speculation over his future. However, with the £187.5m ($390m) transfer dominoes now falling, he looks to potentially be getting the move he wants to Anfield. The Reds are in the market for a new starting striker after agreeing to sell Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal for £46.3m. WHO IS DANGO OUATTARA? Burkina Faso international Ouattara scored seven goals in the Premier League last season. That includes a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in January. The 23-year-old emerged as a useful striker for Bournemouth amid an injury crisis last term. He had previously been deployed at left-back or wing-back. Ouattara joined the Cherries in a £19.5m move from FC Lorient in 2023 and is contracted to the Vitality Stadium until 2028.
