Lorde Performs ‘Virgin' in Full at Surprise Glastonbury Set

Lorde celebrated the release of Virgin by performing the entire album live for the first time at a surprise, early-morning set at Glastonbury.
The musician confirmed the set Thursday night and took the stage at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with a very full crowd there to meet her, despite such little notice and the non-traditional time slot. (Per the BBC, so many people showed up that Glastonbury had to close access to the Woodsies field due to overcrowding concerns.)

Lorde kicked off her set with 'Hammer' and proceeded to play the rest of Virgin straight through, giving each song its live debut. She then ended the set with two longtime favorites, 'Ribs' and 'Green Light.'
At one point during the performance, Lorde thanked fans for showing up. 'We decided to play the whole record for you from front to back,' Lorde said. 'This may be a one-of-one, you know? This record took me a lot. I didn't know if I'd make another record, to be honest, but I'm back here completely free. And I'm so grateful to you for waiting.'
Virgin marks Lorde's fourth album and first since 2021's Solar Power. She wrote and produced the record with Jim-E Stack, while additional contributors include Dev Hynes (a.k.a. Blood Orange), Dan Nigro, and Fabiana Palladino.
As Lorde discussed in her recent Rolling Stone cover story, most of the album was written from late 2023 through 2024, between London and New York. Work on the album began after a transformative period of self-discovery, after recovering from an eating disorder and processing the end of a long-term relationship. She described the period that followed as 'the ooze,' during which she allowed herself to take up more space — physically, creatively, emotionally — and explore the expansiveness of her gender expression.
Describing the physicality of the album, Lorde said, 'I think coming more into my body, I came into an understanding of the grotesque nature of it and the glory and all these things. It's right on the edge of gross. I often really tried to hit this kind of gnarliness or grossness. 'You tasted my underwear.' I've never heard that in a song, you know? It felt like the right way to tell this whole chapter.'
Lorde will hit the road later this year in support of Virgin. The North American leg of the trek kicks off Sept. 17 in Austin and wraps Oct. 22 in Seattle. Lorde will be joined by Blood Orange, Japanese House, Chanel Beads, and Empress Of on select dates.

Behind the scenes, the Kiwi pop star changed up producers, leaving behind recent collaborator Jack Antonoff, but the first reviews for Virgin are heralding the return of the old Lorde (in some ways, at least). "Virgin is rife with epiphanies earned in tussles with one's own established persona. But these cerebral dispatches realize their audience often experiences the work communally and tends to enjoy it most when accompanied by flowing synths and insistent drums. Pure Heroine and Melodrama left indelible marks on mainstream music; Lorde is instrumental to the 21st-century whisper-singer epidemic. Heroine's lean minimalism is one of many sonic precursors to the commercial breakthrough of Taylor Swift's 1989 and thus kin to its many scion. Virgin is a return to bangers." And while the sound may be something more akin to the tracks off of Pure Heroine and Melodrama, there's a strong consensus that Virgin represents a lyrics and sonic evolution for Lorde. "The result is nearly 40 minutes of undeniable pop bangers and jagged synth flashes where Lorde wipes parts of her past clean and makes room for the adult she has crystallized into," writes Rolling Stone's Maya Georgi. "Since [Solar Power], fans have clamored for Lorde to return to the swooping, alternative synth-pop that defined her early career, which means the stakes are particularly high for Virgin. She has answered the call with an album that isn't trying to capture something from the past, but instead leans into the chaos of reinvention." A significant element of the changes present in Virgin's lyrical content seems to be the natural passage of time. Lorde broke onto the scene with "Royals" at the age of 16. For those keeping track at home, that was 12 years ago. "You could call Virgin a coming-of-age album for Lorde's late 20s. It's as if she's finally realized that to come of age is actually a messy, lifelong process — that as sturdy as you think your sense of self is, it'll keep snagging on things that unravel it," writes NPR's Hazel Cillis. "As familiar as Virgin might sound at first play, the Lorde here isn't — and that's a good thing. 'Who's gon' love me like this?' Lorde sings on 'Man of the Year,' in the throes of a breakup. 'Now I'm broken open?' The old Lorde would never sing that. The old Lorde would never even let us see her break." While some critics, like Paste's Matt Mitchell, find the return to bangers as somewhat of a step down in ambition, the move doesn't keep Virgin from being a major piece of work. "Musically, it's the least-ambitious album Lorde has ever made, thanks to her avoidance of the big hooks and explosive resolutions that pop orthodoxy demands," he writes. "But, in an undeniably personal collection of songs full of clichés and gestures toward conversations around earthly desires, gender, and habitual living, it's Ella Yelich O'Connor's most important statement yet." And since this is a Lorde album — which is to say that it's influential — there's a utility in digging through Virgin to see where it will inevitably lead pop music for the next few years. "Obviously, Virgin is very autobiographical and a bit of an elaborate self-cleanse, but it's also the sound of a person in the second half of their twenties finding wisdom and themselves," writes Variety's Jem Aswad. "And judging by how often in the past few years she's been cited as a major influence by young female artists, it will be interesting to see how far this album reaches." Glastonbury viewers have been left frustrated after the BBC's iPlayer service appeared to 'crash' during Friday's headline set by The 1975. The pop-rock group played their only gig of the year at the festival, attracting a huge crowd to the Pyramid Stage for their eagerly anticipated performance. While those in attendance at Glastonbury enjoyed the band's numerous hits, including 'Chocolate', 'About You' and 'Robbers', those at home were left complaining as the livestream appeared to crash soon took to social media to voice their complaints. 'BBC iPlayer keeps messing up. You have one job, let me watch The 1975 at Glasto. I actually have a TV licence too,' said one irate viewer. 'What is going on with BBC #Glastonbury coverage on the iPlayer, keeps cutting and kicking me off,' said a second person. 'Does anyone else keep experiencing BBC IPlayer crashing whilst watching the 1975?' another viewer complained. 'Glastonbury coverage on iPlayer? Hopeless,' another fan said., 'Glad I'm not the only one having issues, seriously. The iPlayer is totally s*** and on the one weekend I need it to work correctly. Every few minutes. buffering like crazy,' one viewer wrote on X/Twitter. Another person complained that this wasn't the first time that the service had crashed that day, claiming: 'BBC iPlayer crashing during The 1975 is not it. Been doing it low key all day, but now it's worse." The Independent has contacted the BBC for comment. During the set, Healy, 36, claimed that he was nervous. 'I know I'm a rock star but this is really scary and I'm really nervous,' he admitted. He quickly pivoted back to a less sincere tone, saying: 'What this moment makes me realise is that I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet is what I am.' Hundreds of performances are taking place across the weekend, including from Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap, British pop stars Charli XCX and RAYE, Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, pop singer Gracie Abrams, and rock bands Wolf Alice, The Libertines and Wet Leg. Alanis Morissette, Lola Young, CMAT and En Vogue also playing some of the festival's main stages on Friday. The other headline acts on the Pyramid Stage are Neil Young on Saturday and Olivia Rodrigo on Sunday.
