F-bombs, SAG complaints: The ‘Fortnite' AI Darth Vader controversy, briefly explained
What was supposed to be a fan-friendly Star Wars-themed new feature in Fortnite has hit some controversy faster than the Millennial Falcon flying the Kessel Run.
On May 16, to much fanfare, Fortnite debuted a new interactive chat feature that allows players of the massively popular online shooter to converse with Darth Vader and receive AI-generated responses from the iconic villain.

But it wasn't just the chance to chop it up with a Dark Lord of the Sith that got fans eager to ignite their lightsabers online. The character would feature a near-perfect AI recreation of James Earl Jones' voice.
Lucasfilm/Epic Games
Two years before Jones' death in September 2024 at the age of 93, Vanity Fair reported that a company called Respeecher had used archival clips of the actor's performance as Vader and AI to generate new dialogue for the character in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jones apparently signed off on the technology, allowing for the voice to be used for the character going forward.
As a part of the announcement of the latest Star Wars-Fortnite collaboration, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Fortnite publisher Epic Games shared that they had worked in conjunction with Jones' estate in bringing the feature to life. "James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it," the family of Jones said in a statement. "We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character."
It took almost no time at all for players online to begin experimenting with the AI Vader, specifically getting him to curse.
The very day of the update's launch, streamers managed to make the character repeat expletives back to them, including "f--king," and delve into more adult-themed topics, like discussion of breasts.
The disturbance in the Force was quickly fixed, however. The official Fortnite account on X replied to the viral posting, saying they "pushed a hotfix immediately and this shouldn't happen again."
Then on Monday, SAG-AFTRA weighed in. The actors union issued a charge with the National Labor Relationship Board for what it says were unfair practices. "Fortnite's signatory company, Llama Productions, chose to replace the work of human performers with A.I. technology," the union said in a statement.
While the actors union acknowledges the companies' work with Jones' estate on the project, they take issue with its implementation.
"We celebrate the right of our members and their estates to control the use of their digital replicas and welcome the use of new technologies to allow new generations to share in the enjoyment of those legacies and renowned roles," the union said. "However, we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games."
Perhaps chief among these members is actor Scott Lawrence, who voiced the character in over a dozen games since 1994 and as recently as 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
The charge comes at a moment of great tension for the industry as voice actors repped by SAG-AFTRA have been on strike since July 2024. Last week, the signatories made concessions in their "best, last, and final" offer to the union, including removing a provision that would allow for unlimited use of a digital voice replica with a buyout.
In a statement to CNET, Epic Games elaborated on some of the safety measures it put in place to avoid further ventures to the Dark Side.
"If a player is repeatedly attempting to get Darth Vader to violate our settings and instructions, he will eventually leave the squad, and the player will be unable to recruit him again in that gameplay session," the representative said. "If we become aware or receive a bug report that Darth Vader in Fortnite responded in a way he shouldn't, we investigate it and if needed, make adjustments to avoid similar responses in the future."
But as one of the most high-profile examples of an AI voice replica to date, the ripple effects from Darth Vader's dirty mouth could spread throughout the stars. Given how quickly users pushed the bot to speak out of pocket, performers and their estates may be watching this news play out in fear.
And we all know where that leads.

Mark Hamill is a 'Star Wars' icon. But he's loving his character actor era.
Mark Hamill is a 'Star Wars' icon. But he's loving his character actor era. Show Caption Hide Caption 'The Life of Chuck': Tom Hiddleston headlines Stephen King movie Based on a Stephen King novella, "The Life of Chuck" chronicles the life of accountant Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) in three acts told in reverse. Even after all this time, Mark Hamill's still got the kids enraptured. Two years ago, Benjamin Pajak was 12 when he was going to film his scenes with Hamill for the new Stephen King movie adaptation 'The Life of Chuck' (in theaters now). Like youngsters almost 50 years ago, Pajak grew up loving Hamill in 'Star Wars' and 'I was nervous to meet the guy,' he says. 'Somehow that got out and they scheduled me a lunch with Mark and I was freaking out.' Hamill is a little amazed himself that this continues to happen. 'I certainly never expected to have the longevity,' says the erstwhile Luke Skywalker. 'Really young kids have no concept of time. They think we made those movies two months ago.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox After hanging up Luke's robe and lightsaber following 2019's 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' and a couple of de-aged cameos in 'The Mandalorian' and 'The Book of Boba Fett,' Hamill has had an interesting bunch of character actor gigs. He played ruthless fixer Arthur Gordon Pym in Mike Flanagan's Netflix horror drama 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and crusty yet kind grandpa Albie Krantz in Flanagan's 'Life of Chuck.' Next, he stars as a sadistic military man known as the Major in another King adaptation, 'The Long Walk' (in theaters Sept. 12). Pajak says Albie is 'the role (Mark) was meant to do': 'Life of Chuck' tells the story of ordinary accountant Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) in reverse chronological order, and Albie is a wise father figure for young Chuck (Pajak and Cody Flanagan) after the death of his parents. Hamill says there's 'an overlay of grief and tragedy' in Albie, who's also an accountant, having lost his son, pregnant daughter-in-law and a grandchild he'd never meet. Yet Albie shows he's still got a spicy side when Chuck dares to call math boring. 'It touches a nerve in him and he is just rhapsodized,' says Hamill, who has a moving speech that was 'a bugger to memorize' and spent every day for a few weeks working on it. 'He lays his heart and soul out but even I thought how amusing it is that of all the things that would turn someone on to math, it's 'when you're looking at the stars, you're looking at the greatest equation in the universe.' That's who he is.' Albie is a definite contrast from Arthur Pym, one of the most heinous men Hamill's ever played in his career. 'I routinely play really odd characters in voiceover. I rarely get those kind of parts on camera,' he says. 'I was thrilled. Some people would be insulted that they came to mind when you're meant to play a soulless, sociopathic, evil person. But I loved it.' Hamill also dug his scenery-chewing role in 'The Long Walk.' Francis Lawrence's dystopian thriller centers on young men competing in a grueling annual walking contest who trudge along a highway: If anybody's pace falls under 3 mph, they're executed until only one survivor is left. Cooper Hoffman, Ben Wang, Charlie Plummer and David Jonsson are among the competitors who are 'the heart and soul of this movie,' Hamill says. 'I do my job, I torment them.' And during the holiday season, Hamill's back in the voiceover game playing the villainous Flying Dutchman in 'The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (in theaters Dec. 19). He appeared on a 2007 episode of the 'SpongeBob SquarePants' show, one that was distinguished for being the first time that Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway had worked together since 'McHale's Navy.' 'I'm a '60s kid and I was really excited about that,' Hamill says. Anytime Hamill waxes nostalgic in conversation, 'Star Wars' inevitably comes up. He recalls reading George Lucas' script and wishing he could play Darth Vader or Han Solo, and opines about his iconic co-stars, being 'wide-eyed and in awe' of Harrison Ford and wowed by wisecracking 19-year-old Carrie Fisher, who 'had the wisdom of an elderly woman.' He gets a kick out of people remembering him, too: 'I'll be in an airport and parents will say to their 4- and 5-year-olds, 'Look who it is, it's Luke Skywalker!' And they look up and they're just horrified. Like, what happened? This guy really let himself go! I say, 'Just tell him I'm Luke's grandfather.' '

Star Wars icon Mark Hamill says George Lucas never considered killing any of the main characters, unlike the sequels: "In the new ones, they pop us off one at a time"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's no secret that Mark Hamill was not too happy about how things turned out in the Star Wars sequels. Once again, the Luke Skywalker actor has taken the opportunity to throw some shade to The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, noting how they got rid of the franchise's legacy characters without a second thought. While promoting his new movie The Life of Chuck, Hamill talked about the beloved sci-fi franchise, recalling a conversation he had with George Lucas about The Return of the Jedi. "When I would complain about things – in the third one, I said, 'Luke has lost his hand, he's got the black glove, shouldn't it be about Luke struggling with turning to the dark side?' George said, 'Mark, it's for children,'" he said during an appearance on TODAY. "And that's why he would never consider killing any of the main characters. In the new ones, they pop us off one at a time," he continued. He's not wrong – Harrison Ford's Han Solo died in The Force Awakens and Carrie Fisher's Leia succumbed to some serious injuries in The Rise of Skywalker. Hamill's Luke also died in The Last Jedi. Don't expect him to reprise his role, however. Mark Hamill definitely rules out a Star Wars return in a recent interview. "We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that," said, "But my deal is, I had my time. I'm appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters. And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there's no way I'm gonna appear as a naked Force ghost." The Star Wars saga has no choice, then, that to look at the future, and there are some very exciting projects coming up. Next in the calendar is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which brings Pedro Pascal's Mando to the big screen for the first time. Ryan Gosling's movie Star Wars: Starfighter will be next (it starts shooting this year), with the return of Daisy Ridley's Rey following afterwards. The Witcher 4 PS5 60FPS Gameplay Looks Good But There's a Catch
During The State of Unreal 2025, CD Projekt Red and Epic Games showcased a tech demo for the highly anticipated . The demo featured footage at 60 fps with ray tracing on a base PS5. While the footage shown is impressive, it may not be indicative of the actual game. In a statement made to Video Games Chronicle (VGC), CD Projekt Red confirmed The Witcher 4 footage shown was not gameplay. Instead, it is a tech demo set in the game's world. 'This is a tech demo, and a first look at the cutting-edge technology powering The Witcher 4 – but not The Witcher 4 itself,' the statement to VGC said. 'It showcases the powerful foundation we're building in close collaboration with Epic Games to push open-world design further than ever before and the core systems and features we're developing using Unreal Engine 5.' Just because this isn't The Witcher 4 gameplay, it doesn't mean all hope is lost. The tech demo does give some indication of the technical capabilities of the base PS5. As seen in the video above, The Witcher 4 tech demo follows its main protagonist, Ciri, as they explore the region of Kovir as she tracks a monster. Along with a look at the protagonist and her horse Kelpie, we get a good view of the dense forests of the new region, as well as the port town of Valdrest. 'We started our partnership with Epic Games to push open-world game technology forward,' said CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski. 'To show this early look at the work we've been doing using Unreal Engine running at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5, is a significant milestone — and a testament of the great cooperation between our teams. But we're far from finished. I look forward to seeing more advancements and inspiring technology from this partnership as development of The Witcher 4 on Unreal Engine 5 continues.' The Witcher 4 was originally unveiled during The Game Awards 2024. A release date is not yet known.
