Gorden Tallis calls out brutal move from Wendell Sailor amid ugly new DCE claims

Yahoo14-05-2025

Gorden Tallis has revealed how Wendell Sailor's decision to leave the Broncos in 2001 destabilised the NRL club, using it was a prime example as to what would be happening with Daly Cherry-Evans and Manly. Leading reporter James Hooper revealed on NRL 360 on Wednesday night that Cherry-Evans' decision to leave the Sea Eagles has created a 'divide' amongst the playing group.
Manly started the year in red-hot form, but have lost four of their last five after Cherry-Evans revealed he'll be leaving at season's end. "There has been a lot of noise around that there's worse than splinters in the Manly camp, there is a real divide,' Hooper said.
'The club was blindsided (by Cherry-Evans' decision) and there's been a massive flow-on effect. Some players - senior players - are struggling, and they believe that decision essentially derailed their season. And looking at current form you would have to say that's the way it's tracking."
Hooper then asked Tallis how he'd feel if one of his teammates did the same. 'Well Wendell (Sailor) did it and I was gutted,' Tallis said. 'Wendell promised us he was going to stay and then he went to rugby union, and you do feel gutted. The senior players do feel hurt when you lose (another senior player).'
Cherry-Evans has been well below his best in recent weeks, and was particularly poor against the Sharks last Sunday. His dip in form has sparked questions about whether Billy Slater will pick him for Queensland in State of Origin 1.
Tom Dearden is playing the house down and vying for the Maroons' No.7 jersey, while Kurt Mann has emerged as a contender for a spot on the bench. If Slater wants to get both Dearden and Mann into his 17, it could be Cherry-Evans who misses out.

David Riccio said on Wednesday night: 'It all comes back to form and showing your teammates that you're willing to rip in every single week. We saw that really good performance against the Panthers and then the nowhere performance against the Sharks.
'He has to show his teammates he's willing to rip and tear for Manly. At this point in time I can understand why his teammates are going 'hang on, are you in or are you out?'.
'The big one is this Saturday night, if he flops and Dearden fires… the fact that Billy Slater is considering Kurt Mann as a utility option on his Maroons bench… Kurt is such a valuable utility for the Dogs and they have a huge opinion of him. But if there is a dip in DCE's form (and Dearden gets picked halfback), they have a ready-made utility in Kurt Mann."
Discussing the Cherry-Evans situation on Tuesday, Matty Johns floated the stunning theory that he could end up at the Roosters as soon as this year. The Roosters appear the only contenders to sign DCE for next season, but Johns believes the Bondi club's recent flurry of moves suggests they want him before June 30.
"There's been a bit of talk about this the other day when players were being released (by the Roosters) and I said 'ah for DCE for next year'," he said on SEN radio. "But they were so urgent to get rid of some blokes and now it's come out that Chad Townsend (is being offered to rival clubs).
"I'm thinking what's at play here? Is there a chance of him (DCE joining before the June 30 deadline). It could happen...and Joey Walsh being named on the extended bench (for Manly). Might be something at play boys. And how big would that be?"

Recapping offers, happenings at Notre Dame's Irish Invasion camp

It was a big day for Notre Dame football, as they welcomed in multiple top-end prospects for its Irish Invasion camp. Earlier in the day, it was Texas running back Wayne Shanks Jr. earning an offer, but that wasn't the only one send out following the event. Multiple more players were given scholarships by Notre Dame, and a good part of that was due to the boss, head coach Marcus Freeman being there. Advertisement That's what separates this era of Irish football from others, the fact that this coaching staff is all-in on the program, and it has shown on the recruiting trail. It wasn't just them either, star running back Jeremiyah Love made an appearance as well. Find out below all the other prospects to earn an offer from Notre Dame during Irish Invasion. (Note: All recruits rankings are from the 247Sports Composite.) 2028 Linebacker Tahj Gray The 6-foot, 2-inch and 200-pound New Jersey native must have shown out during the camp, as the Irish are one of the first major schools to send out an offer after Ohio State and Penn State to the currently unranked prospect. Gray has the perfect size for a middle linebacker, and would look great in the Blue and Gold. 2028 Edge Jackson Vaughn Bergen Catholic has been good to Notre Dame, even though one of its former stars in Steve Angeli is no longer with the program. That didn't matter with the offer out to Vaughn, a 6-foot, 3-inch and 220-pound pass rusher. While he's not ranked at the moment, he has over 30-offers as he heads into his sophomore year. 2028 Cornerback Phoenix Evans Another New Jersey prospect getting an Irish offer, Evans is a bit on the smaller side at 5-foot, 9-inches and 160-pounds. That didn't seem to matter after his performance on Friday, showing that his size isn't going to stop him from being a high-level player. Evans also is unranked, but has over 25-offers, and should be soon. 2028 Defensive end Asher Ghioto Notre Dame has put extra focus on Florida prospects, and Ghioto is the latest from the state to earn an offer. At 6-foot, 5-inches and 240-pounds, he's got a very projectable body that could fill out even more by the time he arrives at a college campus. It's going to be tough to get him to leave his home state, but the Irish have shown that isn't an issue for them. 2027 Edge Chaz Gray It was a big day for New Jersey prospects, as Gray was added to the list that Notre Dame offered. At 6-foot, 4-inches and 225-pounds, he's the long, athletic and fast prospect that the Irish look for in an edge rusher. Gray is ranked as the No. 401 overall player in his class. 2028 Linebacker Allen Kennett Unranked at the moment, the 6-foot, 1-inch and 215-pound Californian did what he needed to earn a Notre Dame offer. He's a bit of unknown at the moment, but don't let that fool you. If Kennett is good enough to earn a scholarship, then he can play at this level. Former Man United defender Jonny Evans unsure of next career move

Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has claimed he is in no rush to decide what his future holds after hanging up his boots. The United academy product played his last match for United in a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford last month. Advertisement It was thought that he may continue his playing career and was linked to Wrexham AFC but he decided to retire at his boyhood club. It has also been reported that Evans may have a future role in coaching and his attitude to young players has been praised by both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. The former United defender was honoured in his home city of Belfast yesterday evening for his services to Northern Irish football. He was given a huge portrait of himself in the green and white of his nation's colours. Speaking to BBC Sport NI before Northern Ireland's 1-0 victory over Iceland, he claimed that he was going to take time before making his next step. Advertisement When asked about his future he stated, 'I'm not sure yet'. He added, 'I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything.' The former United defender sang the praises of his former international manager Michael O'Neill and claimed, 'when you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope.' He also added that the coach has the experience of guiding a team to a major tournament owing to the job he did in Euro 2016 and could well do the same with his current side. Evans also spoke on the potential of his former international team and claimed, 'I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together.' Matthew Evans was inducted into the Wales Sports Hall of Fame and received the Lord Brooke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Welsh Sport (Image: Matthew Evans) A Pembrokeshire sporting pioneer has been honoured with one of the highest accolades in Welsh sport. Matthew Evans, founder of the Long Course Weekend and co-founder of Ironman Wales, was officially inducted into the Wales Sports Hall of Fame. Advertisement He was also presented with the Lord Brooke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Welsh Sport during the ceremony at St Brides Hotel in Saundersfoot. Mr Evans said: "To be inducted into the Wales Sports Hall of Fame with the Lord Brooke Award is truly humbling." He began this journey in 2010 with the first Long Course Weekend, with Ironman Wales starting in 2011. Mr Evans added: "Since then, we've developed world-class sporting events across Wales and around the globe — a journey made possible only through the support of an incredible team." The award recognises the broad impact of Mr Evans' work on Welsh sport, tourism, and the nation's global reputation. Advertisement His events have generated millions in economic benefits, drawn thousands of visitors to Wales, and helped position the country as a leader in endurance sport. Mr Evans said: "From a government that understood the vision, to a county that helped with the hard yards, to communities that came together to deliver a world-class visitor experience – and a team that disrupted the market and created something truly Welsh and world-class – this has always been about collective belief and effort." The Long Course Weekend has grown into one of Wales's top sporting exports, with versions now held in New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, Maastricht, Mallorca, Holland, and Yorkshire. Mr Evans has also developed a legacy programme for children, a volunteer scheme, and business partnerships that support host communities and promote long-term growth. Advertisement He said: "A heartfelt thank you to the athletes who've supported us so loyally over the years – and to their loved ones who party, cheer, and make our red-carpet finishes famous across the world. "Your passion brings our events to life." He finished his remarks by acknowledging a lifelong friend. He said: "A final shout out to Scott Powell, who's been there since we were 16 years old – front row at Llandovery College – and still by my side today (although thankfully, he doesn't drop the ball anymore). "This one's for us both, for the team, for the county, and for everyone at Major Events in Welsh Government."
