Coast Guard District No.4 gets new commander
Kochi: Deputy inspector general Ashish Mehrotra assumed duties of Commander,
Indian Coast Guard District No.4
(Kerala and Mahe) from outgoing District Commander
DIG N Ravi
on Monday.
The officer had the distinction of holding important Command and Staff appointments, both afloat and ashore. In his previous appointment, he commanded Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Lakshmi Bai, Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) ICGS Sangram and Coast Guard Workup Team (East).
The Officer graduated in electronics from Lucknow University and holds to his credit a master's degree in nautical science from Navigation and Direction School of Indian Navy. He joined Coast Guard service on Jan 5, 1998. The officer is an alumnus of National Defence College, New Delhi (63 NDC).
His important appointments include Navigating Officer of Western Fleet ship INS Udayagiri as the first Indian Coast Guard deputationist, secondment to the Information Sharing Centre of Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP-ISC, Singapore) as manager (research) and CG adviser to director general of Indian Coast Guard, New Delhi.

Criminal cases will be registered against Mathavallis: Abdul Aziz
Nellore: WaQF Board Chairman Sheikh Abdul Aziz reaffirmed the coalition government's commitment to protecting Waqf Board properties, warning that criminal cases will be filed against board members (Mutawallis) found responsible for illegally selling Waqf properties. Speaking at a press conference in Vijayawada on Saturday, Aziz announced that an ongoing inquiry into the sale of Waqf properties will lead to strict action against guilty members. 'Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is resolute about safeguarding Waqf properties, and there will be no compromise,' he stated. Aziz highlighted that the Central government halted funding to the Waqf Board due to the previous YSRCP government's failure to submit utilisation certificates for Rs 386 crore. He noted that the issue has been raised with Chief Minister Naidu, who is addressing it with the Central government. The Chairman announced the formation of a Rent Review Committee (RRC) to manage rents from approximately 1,300 Waqf Board shops. To address issues like property sales and rent disputes, future Waqf Board meetings will be held across all districts, moving away from the earlier practice of convening only in Vijayawada. Aziz also revealed that the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) applied to establish an MSME Park at Mallayapalem village in Guntur mandal. The Waqf Board decided to lease the land long-term to APIIC instead of permanently transferring it. Additionally, Rs 1.5 crore has been allocated for the development of Barashahid Dargah in Vijayawada, with further funds designated for the development of Kasumur and AS Pet Dargahs. Waqf Board Director SK Nasir stated that rental income will support the education of underprivileged Muslim students, their marriages, and the state government's P-4 initiative.

Joint counter-terrorism mock drill conducted by Garuda Force, Gorkha Rifles
Bengaluru: In a step towards strengthening national counter-terrorism preparedness, a joint mock drill was conducted on Saturday by the Garuda Force - the counter-terrorism task force of the Karnataka State Police and the 4/8 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army. According to officials, the exercise, conducted under the command of the Trivandrum Brigade, took place at a high-security, undisclosed location in the Bengaluru region, maintaining strict confidentiality in line with security protocols. 'This marks the first time both forces have trained together under a unified operational umbrella. The drill was conducted as part of the Mutual Aid Scheme under the Garrison Commander of the Banaswadi Military Garrison and involved key stakeholders, including the State Police, Traffic Police, City SWAT, Bomb Disposal Team, Fire and Emergency Services and the District Medical Health Team,' the Defence PRO said in a statement. The objective was to synchronise, harmonise and synergise the multi-agency response to terror threats, particularly in complex urban scenarios, it said. According to the statement, the exercise demonstrated a high level of coordination and mutual trust among the participating units. The integration of civil and military assets into a single, coherent response mechanism reflects a matured and proactive security doctrine, it said. Commenting on the exercise, a senior official remarked, 'It is heartening to witness such unity of purpose and seamless coordination between the armed forces and civil agencies in the fight against terrorism. Today's exercise reaffirms our collective readiness to respond swiftly and effectively to any threat to public safety.'

Three Sri Lankans spotted near sandbar caught by ICG
RAMANATHAPURAM: The Indian Coast Guard's (ICG) hovercraft patrol unit found three Sri Lankan nationals in the fourth sandbar near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on Saturday morning. They were later handed over to the marine police for further investigation. Official sources said that based on information about three people being stranded in the fourth sandbar, the ICG Mandapam unit deployed the hovercraft patrol team to check the sandbar by 9 am and found Lankan nationals S Kabilan (34), L Mathivilangu Asutha Gunathilaga (33), and Sumithrolan Fernando (43), and brought them to Arichalmunai by 9.45 am and handed them over to the marine police for further investigation. Officials said that the primary investigation revealed that there had been previous criminal cases against the trio, and that they arrived at Mannar on Friday night, from where they took a ferry and attempted to migrate to India and later flee elsewhere.
